this being in the same episode where it's mentioned that lestrade's wife was having an affair is crazy to me because personally i could not IMAGINE, look at him????

I watched it for the first time at 25... Realised Sherlock used the same form of words as me to come out (I would return a casual do you have a boyfriend with a "not really my thing"). I then spent the next five years thinking how did the just try to no-homo the obvious coming out? Like Gatiss is gay - he knows how people do this?

I love that Sherlock that whispers “THE GAME IS ON” to John in his HLV wet dream because we’re finally seeing one of Sherlock’s intense gazes from John’s front on perspective and it’s so seductive and over the top, and John’s imagination has clearly added layers of sensuousness that aren’t there in real life because Sherlock puts his mouth in John’s face fairly innocently irl, but dream!Sherlock knows exactly what he’s doing

I was just rewatching this scene in ASiP, and I have to tell ya, man, it really is that intense. Like, whoa, there’s no really good ‘reason’ for Sherlock to suddenly get in John’s face here:

You can see John just lose his train of thought entirely for long seconds, staring blatantly and then shifting his gaze to Sherlock’s mouth. But that isn’t the kicker: it’s the way that Sherlock moves into John’s space and *startles* John, draws him into this really overt nonverbal zone-out. Like, whoa, John was saying something casually to Lestrade right before this moment in ASiP, and then he literally trails off and Sherlock’s eyes visibly capture him in sudden silence. Note, I don’t think it was *conscious* on Sherlock’s part, but it was always weird, incongruous, and if you watch it totally out of context like in John’s dream, intensely romantic, if not sexual.

Anyway, we see Sherlock’s face front-on the first time he really does this in ASiP, and it was totally less than innocent. Not manipulative, certainly, but not innocent, either. And even that first time, John’s response was to flick his eyes to Sherlock’s lips. It’s not as overt as Lestrade’s double-take at Molly in ASiB, but yeah. Yeah, he’s always like that.

Speaking of Lestrade, we’re not the only ones who look at this and think, “Whoa, intense!  What the bloody hell is going on here?”

I chose to put this right after SIGN OF THE FOUR because of Holmes’s magnificently bitchy “don’t even bother crediting me” moment that I felt deserved a deeper reason than dunking on Lestrade for no reason.

There’s also the quote about the potential meaninglessness of life that ends the story and is, again, weirdly poignant for a fairly ordinary case. The drawing for that quote is inspired by this Paget piece I love:

With Sherlock and John helping out, DI Lestrade barely knew what to do with himself at crime scenes any more.  He mostly just tried to keep himself entertained.

yes! this is one of my all time favorite fics in this fandom, i have re read it many times! there are some followup stories in the set, and there might still be the blog, i haven't looked that up in a while, but it continued the story for a long time. top shelf.
