The stories I read show me beautiful girls, girls who shine as bright as the sun, girls with fair skin and blue eyes, girls who wield swords and magic to save the world. I’ve always loved those stories, escaping into someone else's world, someone else's mind. Beautiful girls falling in love with handsome boys and making a happy ending for themselves even when the world denied them one.

But where are the stories about me?

What about girls like me? The quiet ones who read about the brave girls, girls with brown skin and brown eyes? The girls who are so often alone in their fight to be heard? The girls who wield their words as weapons? Girls who fall in love with other girls?

Where are the stories about me?

Where are stories showing the ten year old who kept looking for herself in her books that brown girls can save the world too? Where are the stories showing the twelve year old who hated her face that her brown skin and brown eyes are beautiful? Where are the stories showing the thirteen year old that she wasn't alone in liking girls?

Where are the stories about me?

This is literally me as a kid.  Dad used to have the responsibility of giving out the well reports that came in on the friday night to anyone who phoned for the rest of the weekend.  The problem was, on saturday mornings, he was doing the food shopping, so I was given a list of approved callers and he’d leave the well report figures by the phone.

Theoretically I was just supposed to list off the numbers.  Except. Very early I started parsing the figures and give my own analysis.  Apparently engineers and geophysicists got a bit freaked out by a ten year old going ‘It’s not that good, the flow’s really slow compared to last week, and there’s gas pockets really screwing up the flow in the east pipe judging by the pressure report.’

Dad still got that yelled at him at conferences: ‘This is the fucker who used child labour to do well analysis!’

‘Was it wrong?’

‘That’s the not the point!’

We found him- the 20 year old with 10 years experience

break out in hives when self identified progressive interlocutors position that the problem of modern alienation is located in the fractured nuclear family. like, if you want, you can lament that it in the west, there are no longer large, expansive family units tied together by kinship and marriage that labour toward a common purpose. except this has been a violent form in all the history i know. in parts of the world where the family still represents this feudal image the price paid by victims of its inevitable violence is escalating. the social control the average hindu joint family is capable of enacting with a police empowered to serve the family when recognised explicitly by the state as an engine for organising productivity is terrifying. please stop fantasising about the benevolent patriarch and the loving matriarch.

the greatest single contributor to much of my childhood happiness compared to many of my peers was being raised in a nuclear family, my parents financially indepedent and physically removed the hindutva fascists that pepper my family tree.

since this is getting attention just wanna reiterate that i originally tagged this post my fave is family abolition etc because im pro abolition of the family. which also includes the nuclear family! this specific post was pushback against the characterisation of the extended family as a solution to alienation by highlighting how insidious its control can be. my personal experience was positioned as a counterweight, with how a smaller family can give young people a certain degree of autonomy.

the one thing that the hindu nationalist push for the uniform civil code reforms in india i expect will continue to preserve is the legal fiction of the hindu undivided family and the tax benefits hindu owned businesses get to claim by incorporating as such.

the "I believe in abortion only in extreme situations" people (especially women) truly baffle me because I genuinely consider "a human has another human growing inside of them and does not want to" to be a very extreme situation. to me that feels so deeply like an extreme emergency situation. I know this has been said before but it's incredible to me that this does not feel innately horrifying and "extreme" to everyone.

There Used to Be a Lake Here Once (April, 2024)

I wrote this poetry collection when I was in college and it ended up getting acquired by the Writers Workshop, Kolkata- an Indian independent press that has published, among others, the works of Ruskin Bond, Vikram Seth, Kamala Das, Nissim Ezekiel and AK Ramanujan.

I grew up in Kolkata in the mid 2010s, whilst juggling multiple identities- Bengali girl child, queer teen brought up under a Catholic school system, later, a transgender enby poet and writer reconciling my personal and political worlds through academia and writing. This chapbook, divided into two sections, contains twenty-six poems on Bengali trans queer coming-of-age. I wrote it for the same reason I write all my stories: in the hopes that younger queer and trans desi youths can take some heart, and know they aren't as alone as I felt when I was a kid– even if the versions of India we have lived through are quite different, for better and for worse.

Anyway, cheesy stuff over. My author copies just arrived today and well, aren't they simply beautiful? Apparently, there will be more different colour editions. Which one do you like best?

THERE USED TO BE A LAKE HERE ONCE

A poetry collection about trans bodies, sapphic love, the desi queer community, and growing up Bengali in early 2000s Kolkata.

This is an indie debut poetry book by a non-binary Bengali author. Buying an author copy helps support me directly, as opposed to buying from a website.

GP*y: sritamasen1905@oksbi

INR = Rs 300, USD = $ 4 (INR 300 converts to only about 3 USD, however, P*ypal skims off quite a bit, so if you want to support me, would appreciate if you paid around 4-5 USD)

HOW TO ORDER:

🦚 Fill out the Google form. There you can provide your personal details- address, pincode, country, name (PLEASE add the same name as a note in your Gp*y/P*ypal payment following slide 3; this will help me keep track.) as well as choose an edition of your preference and let me know what inscription/note you'd like me to add, if any.

🦚 After the base payment of Rs 300 is made via P*ypal or GP*y, I will confirm your purchase via Instagram DMs. Please ensure that your DMs are enabled, and if not, please mandatorily add your email ID.

🦚 Once I have finalized your order, I shall calculate shipping charges and let you know the additional prices to pay. For Indian folk, this will take 7-10 days. For those living abroad, please be patient, it might take slightly longer to calculate.

🦚 When you clear the shipping charges, your parcel shall be mailed soon after.

International purchasers, please try not to cancel orders after booking, I swear I'll have a meltdown if I have to figure out the P*yPàl and overseas refund transactions. Please, please be patient and cooperate; I'm a debut author and am still figuring out the nitty-gritties of overseas shipping. Also please note that I cannot 100% guarantee you a colour edition of your choice; although call me biased but they are all so beautiful. My payment details are on slide 3, and if you cannot purchase my book atm, I would appreciate a tip on my ko-fi!

Thank you for supporting a Bengali trans queer author; I hope I can write more for you soon.

For this sale, first priority will given to readers who identify as Desi, Bengali, LGBTQ of color and/or trans queer.

Better look at the various editions. The colours are black, scarlet, indigo/dark bluish purple, rose gold, emerald green and sea blue.

Do other writers ever get this like, hyper-specific dialogue exchange drop into their brains and you know exactly where these character are standing and what they’re doing and how they’re saying these words but that’s all you get. You don’t have much other context and this specific moment that exists only at this time in your headspace??

I thought Eve ate an apple… isn’t that a pearl?

It's actually never specified what the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil is. Personally I like to imagine it was a fig for narrative lietmotif.

Did we all got hit with the mandela effect, bc I also thought it was an apple 👀

Nope! In the original hebrew, it is generic fruit (though as I said, rabbis have argued it might have been a fig). But it became popular to depict it as an apple after Milton's Paradise Lost claimed it as such.

You're not a fan of Graves' "quince, fruit of the Goddess" theory then?

I think trying to conflate (because I refuse to respect it as syncretization) Eve with Aphrodite deserves outright ridicule if I'm being completely honest. There's limits to what can be called Christiana interpretatio and I apparently draw the line at claiming authoritatively that the fruit was quince.

I am Jewish. I am an anti-Zionist. I am always and forever pro-Palestine.

My grandmother was born in Palestine before Israel existed. My grandmother, who died less than a decade ago (in her 70s) was already older than the settler colonial state of Israel. Judaism exists without Zionism. Zionism goes against the Jewish religion. Zionism is white supremacy.

From the river to the sea Palestine WILL BE FREE
