8.05 - Blood Brother

It's just so endearing (and also a little bit sad) that Sam Winchester, the boy who has told the devil to go fuck himself and has saved the world more than once, still gets nervous and insecure.

Please consider: in season 8, Sam cared for but did not name Riot for the longest time. He just… called him “dog.” On some level I never quite took the time to examine, that always seemed strange. But of freaking course Sam didn’t name the dog. He lived an itinerant life and never once got to hold onto the things he valued (other than his literal surviving family members, though that only lasted until Sam decided he also wanted an education). Never mind that at that point he’d just freshly lost Dean and the fear of forming connections again must have been a raw wound.  He valued his freedom and time with the dog Bones as a young runaway enough that it brought a smile to his face decades later, and he had to leave Bones behind when he left, too.

He likely doesn’t expect to be able to keep anything good that comes his way. Why name something you’ll have to leave behind? Which, of course, only makes it more heartbreaking that Riot did end up getting a name.
