The thing about sam is that from the pilot to the finale he is a weirdo freak. He was always and will always be weird by both society's and his own family's standards. Sam's hope to be normal as a kid was a pipe dream and by the pilot he's come to terms with that but still wants to pursue the sort of life he was deprived of growing up. Wanting to go to college and have a career doesn't suddenly make him The Normal Brother.
