Glow-Worms are awesome!

Another illustration from Sex on Earth, and what an amazing way to attract a mate - having a bio-luminescent bottom....

I saw my first female Glow-Worm last year.  On Midsummer Night’s Eve I went to watch the sunset on St Catherine’s Hill just outside Winchester.  It was a beautiful night, and seeing that green glow first hand was such a privilege - it was so much brighter than I expected.

The males though apparently can get a bit confused with all the artificial lights around them, and can find it hard to tune into the glow of the lady Glow-Worms.

From Sex on Earth by Jules Howard.  I love the story of these two flamingos at a nature reserve site in the UK.  It took the people working there a while to realise their alpha couple were both male; now they are given eggs to raise every year...

So... er.... how much do you know about duck vaginas...?  There are a pet favourite subject that my friend Jules Howard often talks about at conferences, with a whole chapter dedicated to ducks in Sex on Earth.  I was pleased I didn't have to draw an actual vagina when illustrating the book, as they are spectacularly complicated.  Duck penises are too, and with male ducks being rather promiscuous, the threat of infection from STIs to female ducks is high - so a duck's vagina is kind of like a booby trapped lair of a super hero.  She will only allow the healthiest males to mate with her.
