Most polluting countries
The countries that emit the most carbon dioxide are generally those with the most populations.
The fight against climate change and global warming have one of its focuses on greenhouse gases, mainly carbon dioxide. In 2020, mainly due to the restrictions and confinement resulting from the coronavirus pandemic, carbon emissions associated with energy use were reduced by 6.3%, to 32,284 million tons, which represents the largest decline since 1945.
This drop in carbon emissions in 2020 is similar to what the world needs to average annually over the next 30 years to be on track to meet the targets reached in the Paris Agreement.
The countries that pollute the air the most are also usually those with a larger population, according to data from the BP Statistical Review of World Energy 2021 report. Such is the case of China, the most populous country in the world, which emitted 9,899 million tons of CO2, which represents an increase of 0.6% compared to the previous year. China, responsible for 30.7% of the total, has more than 1.4 billion inhabitants and is one of the few that increased its pollution figure.
In the second position in the ranking is the United States, which after withdrawing from the Paris Agreement in November 2020 during the term of Donald Trump, rejoined it shortly after the beginning of 2021. This country represented 13.8% of global emissions, up to 4,457 million tons, 11.6% less. In third place is the second most populous nation in the world, India, which, with 2,302 million tons emitted, produces 7.1% of all these emissions.
Despite this global drop, there are worrying signs that this reduction in emissions will be short-lived as the global economy recovers. The challenge is to achieve year-on-year reductions in emissions without a massive disruption to our livelihoods and everyday life, as occurred in the harshest months of the pandemic.
8. South Korea
South Korea was responsible for 1.8% of CO2 emissions, with 578 million tons, 7.5% less than in the previous year.
7. Germany
Germany emitted 605 million …….
