Are there any good fate Merlin analysis posts in tumblr that you can give to me ? I want to know who Merlin is but all I’m getting from the majority of the fandom is that he’s a d*ck wizard
The tl;dr of Merlin is that he’s half-demon, which among other things made him immortal and gave him some Complicated opinions on feelings.
He claims that he is incapable of genuine emotions and can only emulate these emotions by sipping them off humans. He claims that he doesn’t care for humans as individuals, but loves humanity as a whole because they’re very entertaining. He’s clairvoyant (ie can see anything happening in the present time) yet claims that he was tricked into getting trapped into Avalon, unable to see the world again.
Now if I keep using the word “claim” it’s because it’s very much ymmv here. Maybe it is true. Maybe he’s as unfeeling and inhuman as he claims to be. Maybe him being a dick wizard is because he find trolling people incredibly entertaining.
Maybe it’s false. Maybe the trolling facade is just a front so no one tries to know him better. Maybe he’s just an immortal old man consumed by guilt over getting a little girl (his daughter, his daughter, his daughter) to become a king and sacrifice her everything to her country. Maybe he wasn’t so much trapped as he willingly fell into Avalon as a punishment for his actions. Maybe he pretends to be emotionless because losing his daughter hurt too much too much and he can’t do it again, if he never feel emotions he doesn’t have to suffer that much again, if they don’t think he can love they won’t try to get him attached and he won’t hurt as much when they die like everyone everyone everyone he’s ever known because he’s immortal and that is as much of a curse as a blessing.
My two cents is that he’s somewhere in between. Clearly he doesn’t process feelings the way humans do. But he’s also really willing to bend the rules for the sake of the people he supposedly doesn’t love (see: Artoria & Realta Nua’s ending) and reacts suspiciously strongly to Gil’s death in Babylonia (”no guys i’m totally over my daughter’s death trust me WHY IS THIS DUDE DEAD HE PROMISED HE WOULDN’T DIE”) It’s possible himself doesn’t realize he has emotions and has mad alexithymia like Salter does. Or maybe he’s just the fucking king of repression idk.

love this shot of merlin as he watches the various tragedies of human history play out because he is completely neutral to it all this is a story to feed on and even moreso the stars behind him are cartoonish and dull compared to the blinding lights everywhere else because he does not see their brilliant light the way others do. merlin consciously does understand the beauty and meaning behind heroes and humanity and those tiny lights but because he is a half incubus who feeds on emotions he inherently is meant to just feed on them the cap that prevents him from becoming a full on beast is the clash between this understanding of humans as beautiful and humans as food and the reason he has still not become a beast is because even he cant betray those tiny lights. unrelated pictures of oberons crowns

Spoilers for Lostbelt 6.
This was going to be about how I saw some parallels between Oberon/Castoria and Mozart/Mash from the first singularity, but then I realized that I didn't have much to say on that but found something else.
What I found to be pretty neat in this Lostbelt was that, since it's a loose recreation of PHH Artoria becoming king, we're essentially the 'Merlin' of the situation.
Not really Guda, but us as players. Guda is our piece on the board, the 'foreign magus', but we're fulfilling the role.
We're someone from a far off place, immediately arriving and being tasked to make sure this young girl is capable of leading a country in just a short amount of time. And, just like Merlin, we're overwhelmingly aware of all the pain that's going to come with it. We know things will go wrong, that her friends will be hurt, and that many of them will probably die- if not by the destruction of the Lostbelt, then by what happens inside it.
I say 'not Guda' because Guda isn't aware of the scheming, deaths, and tragedies that are underlying the adventure. But we are. We're watching the fall of Londinium and force to play it out, we see Muryan take her revenge on the Fanged Clan, and watch as Aurora schemes from behind the scenes. Guda isn't aware of how Morgan lost her daughter, or how she met up with the Chaldean, but us as players gives us a sort of narrative 'clairvoyance' that makes it all the more apparent.
Because yes, this is just one Lostbelt, as part of a game, but the fact that we're so invested in the story is just like how our Merlin found himself- despite being so detached from humanity- burdening himself with guilt at Artoria's end that he stepped into an obvious trap and locked himself away in Avalon.
Just like Merlin, we're going to have to watch Artoria reach the lowest of lows so that she can drag herself up to the peak and become the person she's meant to be.
And, just like Merlin, we want this story to at least have some semblance of a happy end.
