Day 6 - Tapestry
A bit late for the SatBK2024 hosted by @satbkpromptweek, but I guess it's better late than never! I really wanted to challenge myself a little this time, so I experimented with something a little different. Overall happy with the results!
will never be over how when sonic and caliburn are at molten mine and they're surrounded by a sea of lava and caliburn tells him they could literally die if they fall and sonic says "I KNOW ISN'T IT GREAT?!"
yeah that checks out
Sonic after seeing a volcano in 06’s Flame Core:
The interactions in this game are top class. My sides XD
Small but interesting fact - The flower that Merlina has is actually a Straw Chrysanthemum. This is very much an intentional choice by Maekawa as he stated on Twitter as this flower represents "Everlasting" or "Eternal" in the language of flowers. Which is a reference to her ultimate agenda - To make the kingdom last forever. I can sympathise to an extent with Merlina. Unlike many other Sonic villains, her goals were altruisitic but misguided. She loves the kingdom so much that you can't doubt it's a motivator alongside her own sadness to make it eternal so it avoids its fate. Just a shame she has to drown it in dark magic and without regard to everyone else in order to do it.
Excalibur Sonic from memory
Hehe. SA2 reference.
There's a alternae way to defeat the Earth Dragon than just lopping off its horn. The pillar on the right nearest the dragon in the third section is fragile. If you hack away at it, you can pin the dragon under it and clear the mission there and then.
Sonic: "Shut up and swat wasps wasp-swatter!"

This adds a new dimension to my "Sonic fulfill's Mordred's role" theory.
Merlina wants to prevent the end of the story from coming to pass, but as Sonic's "Beats me" indicates, even he doesn't know how it all ends. To which Merlina informs him that Gawain and Lancelot devolve into war against each other, the Round Table is split, and Arthur is sent to Avalon after being struck down by his son Mordred.
However, if we look at the events of SatBK, we see the fake Arthur already situated in Avalon, where he is struck down by Sonic. I've already elaborated my reasons for why I think Sonic fulfills Mordred's role, but for clarity's sake, I will reiterate them here: - Like Mordred, Sonic takes the sword in the stone which originally belonged to Arthur and slays (fake) Arthur with it. - Sonic claims multiple times that he doesn't mind "playing the bad guy" once in a while, which is notable. Why would he say this if he was meant to be Arthur all along? - Merlina warns Sonic that will become known as "the worst of knights, slayer of kings" if he decides to go through with his quest, which mirrors the tarnishing of Mordred's image over centuries of literary tradition, from a neutral figure to a world-famous traitor, to the point where his name becomes synonymous with treachery (Dante places Mordred in one of the deepest rungs of hell, reserved for traitors) - Merlina's words suggest that if another Mordred analogue exists, he has yet to be introduced into SatBK. By conservation of the law of detail, Sonic is the only one available to fill that slot. - If we think of Mordred not as "traitor" but as "catalyst for bringing the story to a natural close," suddenly Sonic's role in SatBK makes more sense, and provides a natural foil to Merlina, for her desire to artificially preserve the kingdom in an eternal state of stagnancy. Things aren't progressing as usual because of Merlina's interference, perhaps. But I think it would add an extra layer of irony if her interference was what ultimately helped cause Camelot's story to end since she called in the last character needed, Mordred (Sonic), to bring the narrative to its natural conclusion. After all, she'd already warped Arthur's character into something he originally wasn't - Sonic notes that "he seemed way different in the stories." Why not Mordred?
If we think of Sonic as Mordred, or more succinctly the agent of Camelot's downfall, then perhaps Merlina is trying to prevent the end of the story by freezing it in time and stopping Mordred from doing what he was meant to do.
This makes an alarming amount of sense.
Note the apples the grow in Faraway Avalon. This is likely a reference to the fact that on the mythical Avalon in English mythology, apples grow on trees all year round. The name Avalon is even derived from the languages of Indigenous Britons, the terms aball or avallen. Which means "Fruit Tree."
It's great when Sonic gets annoyed and shows his oft-cited short temper. He's usually pretty chill. A quick way to piss him off is to denigrate his abilities. I find his and Caliburn's relationship both funny and interesting. It's a factor in why Caliburn is still my 8th favourite Sonic character.
““Merlina…every world has it’s end. I know that’s kinda sad but that’s why we’ve got to live life to the fullest in the time we have. At least…that’s what I figure” - Sonic the Hedgehog. Sonic and the Black Knight. 2009 “Do I need a reason to wanna help out a friend?” - Sonic the Werehog. Sonic Unleashed. 2008”

I miss the time when Sonic had characterization like this, when he was one who dispensed simple yet wise and compassionate lines. I couldn’t envision these lines coming out of the mouth of any character other than him. And it’s a tremendous pity how his character is being shoehorned into comedic roles that aren’t even funny or clever such as Colours, which exaggerates his character for no good reason and makes a compelling part of his character effectively jump off a cliff because of the all-consuming fixation on making him out to be a ‘comical’ character to the detriment of so many of his other traits and quirks.
Truly a shame. The character has been so much more and can be so much more.
A knave and his sword
Life is short. You have to appreciate its beauty despite inevitability of the end.
All praise to, by far, the Sonic game with the most wonderful messages and greatest characterization!
