♦ (X) So in terms of personal space, Sam and Dean never had too much of it. I'm thinking of them cooped up in the back seat of the impala, knees occasionally knocking as the car jostled with the imperfections on the asphalt. When Sam was trying to carve out any sense of his independence and developing an awareness of his own value placed on personal space, Sam tried to maintain as much of that space as he could but once he hit his growth spurt I imagine it became next to impossible if Dean wasn't in the front seat. When Sam gets roped back into the life I'm thinking its almost like a gravity shift back into a habit. They're working a case and there's enough room on the sofa for them to fit another person between them but instead their knees and boots scrape against the other while they talk. It's so instinctive that they don't even notice it, probably never mean to do it. Subconsciously, I'm almost thinking in new environments (like the home of a witness or even the jail cell in season 3) it's a source of comfort and provides a sense of safety to group so closely together.
♦ (X) Additionally, I think Sam demonstrates that in the way he safeguards some of this personal things. Growing up in a shared space like a motel room meant that he had very little that was specifically his own. But over time, I like to imagine that Sam made it very clear there were some items that weren't to be touched. Certain books he kept in his bag, his toothbrush/deodorant/razor, maybe some photographs. He foot-stomped leaving those alone to Dean and John until they knew not to mess with that stuff.
--- so get this. I'm looking for any dean winchester writers out there who'd be willing to do a 1x1 on discord with me. I'm heavy into the following:
- case based threads
- codas/episode gap filling (writing our own version of what happened between scenes or after an ep concluded)
- lore and world building
- emotional threads/angst based threads
- au writings
I'm kirk (25+ | he/him), in the gmt timezone, have written sam for about 10 years now and have a deep appreciation and care for crafting this character and exploring him to the fullest. samples of my writing/characterization are on my page, and I can produce more if necessary. I'm setting up a carrd for this search, but in the meantime if you're interested please send a url where I can find samples of your portrayal of dean, and where I can read any rules you may have, for compatibility purposes. thanks!
⠀⠀⠀ 𝐁oredom struck much earlier than expected leaving the eldest to frequently tap his pen onto one of the hotels tables 。He’s been staring at the same page for what felt like hours 。He was far from the type to indulge in books outside of research but a part of him reread his fathers journal to keep his memory fresh on the things they were hunting 。But it sucked 。That’s when he heard the blatant annoyance in the youngers voice, the edges of his lips curving upright into the smallest smirk as he hoisted himself up from his spot 。Game on 。With frequent persistence he knew he could break his brothers streak of consistency thus he made his way over to him, thick digits curling inwards as he wrapped a single arm around the tallers neck 。Said fist made contact with the others head and began to mess up his hair 。True brother hassling 。
⠀⠀⠀ ⠀❛ 𝐂’mon birds nest, let’s go out and have some fun there is an arcade down town 。 ❜
Sam had just set his cup down when he felt an arm around his throat and a couple knuckles tussling his hair. Sam's face heated up and he gripped Dean's arm to pry it off him. He knew more advanced techniques to get Dean to back off but that was for self defense. This was just heckling. They were far more forgiving to each other under those circumstances. ❝Dean, what the hell?!❞ Sam growled, jaw clenched until he turned around in his seat to look up at the older Winchester. They'd absolutely been in the motel room for too long; but Sam wasn't one to concede easily. ❝Since when do you and I visit arcades?❞ His brow furrowed. It had been y e a r s since Sam had done something like that. Part of him thought it sounded fun. Sam stood and cracked his back, moving to the coffee pot to fill his cup again, only to find it empty. He groaned. Turned to look at Dean. He'd need more convincing. ❝My idea of fun isn't exactly getting stared at by a bunch of twelve year olds by the pac-man machine.❞
❝Just couldn't sleep,❞ Sam shrugged. ❝What's your excuse?❞ He looked up from his book and his beer long enough to peer at the other. Normally Sam was all about talking things through. Transparency and all that. This time? He didn't want to talk about it. If the other tried to pry then Sam would too. Neither particularly enjoyed revisiting nightmares.
Sam absently sipped from the cup in his hands. He hadn't noticed it went cold a little while back. His gaze remained glued to the screen. ❝Will you keep it down? ❞ he practically sniped. ❝I'm trying to concentrate.❞

♦ Sam has always wanted a dog. However while he's known other hunters with dogs/familiars/pets, he's learned a few things about himself in regards to this. A dog to Sam represents friendship, unconditional love, loyalty, and constant companionship. Sam had the opportunity to foster and care for Riot when Dean disappeared into Purgatory and he met Amelia. That was one of the few periods in his life where Sam had stability and no real plans to return to hunting. It was upon Dean's return that Sam realized he could never put a dog in a position to live with him and Dean. There was too great a chance their dog could get hurt by something malevolent or left to wonder what happened if Dean and Sam met their untimely deaths on a hunt. Sam doesn't want the slightest chance for a dog to think the brothers simply abandoned them out of lack of care or love. He'd rather spare them all that heartbreak until such a time when stability is even a glimmer of a possibility in their future.
♦ If Jack ever wanted a dog Sam would have a harder time saying no to him than to himself. However he would still caution Jack against it and put up a long fight of attrition over the issue. It might be possible for Jack to one day wear Sam and Dean down on this issue, but in Sam's mind, they all would have to agree unanimously before they added to the Bunker's residence.

Premise.
I'd love a plot where someone heard about Sam's proclamation that anyone wanting to take over Hell had to go through him and makes an opening salvo to take him up on his challenge. Whoever it is would make targets of Sam (and Dean) in a calculated series of moves to take Hell as theirs.
Complications.
I'm thinking of this as more of a series of threads rather than just one. I'm thinking of it as like a seasonal arc, main big bad, type of plot so there are several complications that could be introduced. I think it would be great if the villain involved looked into the Winchesters' past (as Crowley did in Clip Show) via Chuck's books and used the intimate knowledge of them to attack them in that way. Clip Show really showed Chuck's books as a vulnerability to the Winchesters in the wrong hands and I'd love to explore that more here. For instance...they could raise Madison's ghost (as Lilith did with the witnesses) and other painful spectres of Sam's past and have them go after him. They could go after Cassie and her family. They could raid John's storage lock-up (I'm sure he had more than the one that was destroyed in s5) and use something from there like a cursed object or an ancient magical weapon. They could raise old enemies that were defeated like a titan or time god. I'm open to a lot!
Characters.
Your muse could either be an ally or the villain! We could even repurpose characters like Abaddon, any of the Titans, Ruby, etc. Specifically as allies, a Dean, Jo, Rowena, Castiel, Jack, Claire, Jodi, etc. would be good. For villains (or unlikely allies) Abaddon, Crowley, Knights of Hell, Cain, BMoL.
Addendum.
spoilers below for season 14
Back when I used to write Jack it was always a huge desire of mine to have Jack try to remake Hell in order to prove to the Winchesters that he wasn't like his father and could redeem something Lucifer made rotten. This would likely be an au version of Jack (or the thread is set during the time when he didn't have his whole soul and thus Jack is acting out of misguided good intentions). So maybe even though he thinks he's doing a good thing he is doing it through bad means and Sam has to sort of face off with him?? It would be painful and...I'm here for it.

♦ When they moved into the Men of Letters Bunker Sam began a catalogue of all the archived material in their new home. Though there had already been a system of organization for all the lore and collected knowledge, it had not been touched in some time. Sam was able to categorize and archive a lot of the books which made up their new collective library. This was mostly done because the Men of Letters weren't hunters. They were custodians of all that knowledge. Sam needed to have an efficient way for them to access and utilize the lore they had for easier research. Plot opportunity: Sam denoted several texts which could help them find a way to spring Adam from the Cage. He never brought any leads to Dean because he wanted a sure fire plan before they ever attempted anything. It could be possible one of those leads actually amounts to something.
♦ Sam also found a way to hack resources from existing infrastructure, such as scoring him and Dean free internet service to the Bunker (since no one could know it's location and such utilities were necessary) and hacking streaming platforms for their personal use with the help of VPNs and false accounts. Sam knew some of this already but was taught some of it by Charlie Bradbury as well.
♦ For a long time Sam wouldn't touch anything to do with witchcraft. Ruby taught him some basics because he was always a naturally curious guy but she also led him down that path because Sam was always looking for any edge they could gain over Lilith. Sam eventually began to pick up lore books on witchcraft again. He is not a natural witch, nor is he studied in the high craft which Rowena is well versed in, but Sam made sure to familiarize himself with enough of the basics to counter the magics of any witches they were to come across in the future. He'd never admit it to Dean but Sam finds magic fascinating.
❝Look, this whole 'saving the world' thing? It's a marathon. Not a sprint. You gotta take better care of yourself. Trust me, alright?❞
dean isn’t stupid … he knows what’s going on. at least … mostly. the specifics are a little skewed, sure. but it would take a blind man to not notice the blood stained tissues in the trash. to ignore the line of sweat that seems to bead just at the top of his brother’s hairline like he’s ready to break into a fever any goddamn minute. no. he’s not stupid. but he is certainly playing dumb. which is what he assumes sam wants. otherwise, he’d have said something. anything.
god. he wishes he would.
he turns his head like he’s listening for something in the kitchen, but they’re here alone. there’s nothing to listen to. he does it so sam can have some privacy— for the way he stands so suddenly (was he planning to leave the room? for a sneeze no less?) has him scrunching up his lips in thought. maybe he should say something. ask if … you know … sam’s good. but he’ll just get a yes. and really. it doesn’t matter. whatever is going on with sam and the trials is obviously a secret. and if that’s what they’re doing, then that’s what they’re doing.
❝ me? i’m always good. ❞
even when he’s not.
smiling, dean turns his laptop around, flashing the screen of a could be case sam’s way.
❝ what about you? up for a possible vamp nest? ❞
x
So it isn't the both of them. Dean may have gotten the whole thing started but Sam's now the only one going through them. If they could split the load, do them together, Sam is sure there'd have been some mention of that in the tablet. This sort of divine test didn't seem like a team sport. Instead Sam resigns himself to the relief of being the only one affected by whatever the trials are doing to him. At least that's one less worry. At least the damage is contained.
❝Right,❞ says Sam. ❝Sure.❞ Maybe they've gotten too comfortable lying too each other about certain things that it's just easier than arguing. They've both had their fair share of that over the last couple years. They're supposed to be better now. Supposed to have learned their lessons. Sam not telling Dean about the way he's feeling isn't a sign of mistrust. It's a mechanism to keep Dean from worrying about him until Sam knows what they're dealing with. He doesn't need Dean's protective older brother routine on top of everything.
He doesn't immediately realize he's been asked on a hunt, until the screen is staring him in the face. He blinks. Clears his throat. ❝A hunt? Really?❞ Sam's brows furrow. He's been too focused on the prize fight to think about anything else. ❝Don't you think we kinda got bigger fish?❞ Sam wants to get this over with. Isn't sure there's room for anything else in his head right now. He winces as he feels pressure prickle behind his eyes. "Agh." Palm rubs flat against his forehead. "Hey, we got any herbs from that one shop in town?" Witch doctor. Sam stocked up from time to time. Maybe magic would save him. At least for now.
