Training is done!

And just like that, I'm done with birth assistant training. The other nurse didn't even get there until after baby was delivered, mom transferred to bed, cord clamped and cut, placenta delivered and I had completed vitals on mom and baby.

My first solo on call shift is Saturday.

This is in reply to your post about your job if it's something you love and enjoy it wouldn't feel like a burden to you My advice would be to pray about it and focus on what God wants for your life and where He is moving you work is hard sometimes that's why it's work I say this not knowing you and noticing a scripture on your page so if I've assumed your beliefs I apologize.

Thanks for the advice. I have been praying about this opportunity and I feel like this is the current direction I'm supposed to be going. I get anxious a lot and stressed very easily. I'm no longer taking any prescriptions and trying to learn to cope on my own.

After meeting the third nurse who is training me, I felt much more confident in my capability to do this job. She makes me feel more comfortable here. The training period at this facility is basically like a boot camp and nothing like the physical demands after training is done. I'm trying to just tough it out through this time to get to a more regular and realistic schedule.

Got called in at 1am last night. First time getting called in while I was asleep.

Precipitous labor and baby beat me there. Minor postpartum hemorrhage, but we got it under control.

I headed home around 6am and didn't go in for office training today since I was practically up all night. I'm still on call until tomorrow at 9pm so they just want me rested so I can come in for any more births.

I need to practice my discharge teaching and continue studying for my NRP certification, but I think overall the nurses who are training me are saying I'm doing good. This is definitely a much better training experience than that pediatric office. Everyone here wants to see me succeed!

FIRST TIME BIRTH ASSISTANT

I went in to work today to start training after signing my new hire paperwork. I was going to train from 1pm to 6pm. On my way in I got called that there was a birth happening.

I got there before she started pushing. Baby was born a little over an hour later. I did all postpartum vitals (mom and baby), did charting, assisted the midwife, and did their discharge teaching! I was there from pushing until we helped them load up in the car and drive off.

I'm officially on staff and getting paid. I get paid about a third of normal while training but I should be done training in like 2 weeks.

I'm so happy and excited still from the birth! I have the whole weekend off and then I'm on call again starting Monday at 8am until Thursday at 9pm (I won't have to go in for every birth though, they know I'm exhausted and trying to adjust, they just want to give me as many opportunities to experience births as possible to speed up my training).

Interview Summary

Earlier today I had my interview at a local, Christian women's health and birth center. I sat down with one of their 3 full-time RNs. I think it went real well!

This was sort of a preliminary interview. The next step is to attend a birth so they can see how I handle it and I can see if it's truly what I want to do. The way they schedule at this facility is an office day, a day off, and then 24 hours on call. Then repeat. Office days are only Monday through Thursday though. On call shifts are from 9pm to 9pm. I will be on call starting tomorrow at 9pm to hopefully see a birth. They wear scrubs for births and business casual during office shifts.

I am excited for the possibility of this job!

More updates to come on Wednesday. Hopefully I'll get to see a birth by the end of that on call shift.

New Job

Yesterday was my first day of work as an RN in a pediatric office! I meant to post a little blurb about how it went but I was so tired and zonked out at 9 o'clock last night.

Basically this is the best first nursing I could have asked for! I'm an anxious and introverted person, but I love kids. This week will be a slight learning curve having to be super peppy all day long with parents (when babysitting I only have to deal with them for 10min lol) and teenagers (who scare me and put me on edge lol).

I'll keep you posted along the way and share and funny or embarrassing moments!
