thinking about how shuri’s journey of grief is not linear, it’s not the 5 stages we’re used to starting with denial and ending with acceptance. She spends a good majority of the story oscillating between denial or her grief over her brother, then anger, that anger that deepens and morphs into all consuming vengeance. How her grief eats her whole, how it eats namor whole, how it eats wakanda whole. how she never gets her moment of catharsis, never lets the grief settle and set in, never lets herself grieve until the very, very last scene. when she burns the funeral gown marking the end of the grieving period, when her’s only just begun. 

Shuri and Peter Parker meeting (2019): “vines! memes! science! haha look how worried tchalla and tony are. lets go eat tide pods” 

Shuri and Peter Parker meeting (2022): “I am alone in the world. All my family members died in front of me, and my grief was so intense that I almost killed a man in cold blood. Laughter and innocence belong to a dead version of me. I must bear the burden of responsibility alone”

Shuri + addressing T’Challa

This is the scene where M’Baku calls out Shuri during the challenge. I love that everyone surrounding her snaps to action, but please check out Shuri’s body-language here.  Look at her face. She is looking M’Baku dead in the eye.  Her stance is open and relaxed.  She’s not the least bit intimidated. Also notice that Shuri’s mom and most of the Dora aren’t pointing those vibranium spears at M’Baku.   They are effectively holding Shuri back. ….Just something to think about.

Because the only reason Shuri isn’t the Black Panther is that she all the work involved would take away from her time making shinies and more shinies and MOAR shinies…
