memeception
WE’VE HIT TERMINAL MEME
I’ve said “I hate this” so many times on this website, and never actually meant it, because “I hate this” is just shorthand for ‘this is an example of a meme given a twist I wasn’t expecting with intent to surprise’. Which is, in of itself, a meme on this site. God damn it.
But this… This is something else.
The rapidity of a meme’s introduction to its zenith to its decline is so rapid that in ten years, you’ll need a damn twenty-page manual to explain this. It’ll be as unfunny and hard to explain as jokes in Shakespeare plays, except even more inexplicable because fuck, at least Shakespeare’s jokes are usually about anal or fucking your mother, good wholesome sex jokes we can all get behind.
For the love of fuck, how do you explain loss.jpg? How do you explain gun?
….I THOUGHT THIS WAS A YMCA REFERENCE
it is a YMCA reference - that’s one of the 6 memes being represented here
ok let me see if i can break this down easily. YMCA is the easiest place to start - the song itself has become a meme over time with people changing the lyrics to reference other pop cultural events. so YMCA is meme one (1)
this first lyric replacement (”take the breadsticks and run”) is a reference to the tumblr meme ‘stuffing breadsticks into my purse’. i think everyone remembers that one so i wont bother to explain it. that’s meme two (2)
“man door hand hook car door” is a meme of its own, a creepypasta from i dont remember when. it was a terrible stupid retelling of the generic ‘stuck in a car while hook handed man tries to kill us’ story so the stupid title caught on for memorability. that in and of itself is meme three (3)
‘gun’ is… yeah i dont know how to explain gun. long story short you add gun to the end of a phrase instead of what you expect the last word to be. its shock funny. its everywhere but its popular to add to “man door hand hook car door” for.. some reason? gun is meme four (4)
and the thing is, this four meme combo is something thats gone around before. meme combos are, itself, a meme. which means taking this meme combo and mixing in another meme actually becomes meme five (5)
which leaves us at loss.jpg. loss.jpg was a terrible bad comic supposed to be about some tragic event, but it was presented so poorly literally no one takes it seriously, and for some reason recreating the four-panel setup has become popular. so thats meme six (6)
(but i need to add that this is the greatest version of loss.jpg i think i’ve ever seen. the initial ‘young man’ lines up with the guy bursting through the door, and the shock meme ‘gun’ matches the shock scene of the woman in the hospital and idk if OP even thought about that but it makes this just so much better)
I wasn’t going to reblog this, but @pagesofkenna‘s comprehensive meme-by-meme annotation is a thing of beauty and should be shared.
average tumblr post contains one meme, this post, which contains six, is an outlier and should not be counted
it might also just be a coincidence due to loss.jpg’s format but the whole white minimalist four-panel setup is also suspiciously reminiscent of those early 2000’s rage comics
I was getting a political compass vibe too
tag urself im man door hand hook car gun
This works better than I thought it would.
This was in my senior project
I’m not sorry.
EIGHT MEME COMBO
We have officially created a new language
I just had to do it to em
THIS FUCKING THREAD I’M GONNA CRY
I LOST IT AND MAN DOOR HAND HOOK CAR GUN AND DIDN’T EXPECT MORE I’M SOBBING
M E M E T E N
OwO?
You know I had to
I hope you know this is the most cursed addition to my post, and I love it
THIRTEEN!?
SOMEONE EDIT THIS FROM THE ORIGINAL PHOTO SAYING “this one does not spark joy” TO THIS VERSION SAYING “this one sparks joy”
why—
IM SCREAMING
This is the most elaborate meme I have ever seen and damn am I concerned by how it makes sense.
“You’re in your 30s, but you still understand all this meme stuff?” “Oh yeah, sure.” “Can you explain it to me?” “I absolutely fucking cannot.”
One does not simply explain this
Edit:
Another freaking layer!!!
16 motherfucking layers
In the future someone’s going to ask me to explain this and I’m going to be at a loss.jpg for words
you just… understand this. you do not get to explain it, nor would you be able to explain it. you simply understand the meme in and of itself.
imagine the valuable information my brain could be holding on to instead of all of this historical meme knowledge.
Preserve this thread for future memeologists, unearthing a server in the far future, because suddenly it will make 30% of Tumblr actually make sense to them.
I saw that you like Red, White & Royal Blue and Gentleman's Guide To Vice and Virtue. Do you know any other books like that?
Oh wow, Anon. You sent me this forever ago. But I’m perennially bad at answering asks, so here’s a very late response! Hope you found some good books though!
NOTE: Both those books are excellent, and also, quite singular. It’s very hard to rec anything that comes close to the same “feel” of either. (I’m guessing you want something of the MLM variety.) But here’s my best attempt nonetheless. (I would like to add that I haven’t really read much in a while, beyond the few comics I’ve been keeping up with.) Also, important to note is the fact that RWRB is not YA, and rather a new adult romance. Since a majority of what I usually read is YA, a lot of this list will scratch that itch, apologies in advance!
BONUS: Simon Vs. The Homo Sapien Agenda by Becky Albertalli: This is the book that the movie Love, Simon is based on. It’s extremely popular and you’ve probably already read it, but it doesn’t hurt to recommend it! It’s a sweet romance and an easy read. The movie is pretty great too.
6. Carry On by Rainbow Rowell: A Harry Potter-esque “chosen one” falls for his main nemesis and mortal enemy, and man is it a fun read. It’s based on a book referenced in Rowell’s earlier book Fangirl, and is basically her love letter to her love of Harry Potter, which makes sense because the book reads like a Harry x Draco enemies to friends to lovers-type fic, and I mean that in the best way possible. (Sometimes I wish published fiction hit like certain fics, and boy does this done.) The sequel (Wayward Son) is actually out soon. So this would be a perfect time to read it.
5. The Music of What Happens by Bill Konnigsberg: Full disclosure: I started this novel earlier this year, and have yet to finish it. But I love everything Konnigsberg writes, and this is possibly my favourite. It’s set in the 1980′s and tells the story of Jordan and Max as they spend the summer working in a food truck. It’s a case of “opposites attract” and everything I’ve read has been pretty solid. I cannot wait to eventually finish it.
4. The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller: The myth of Achilles but told from his boyfriend/soulmate’s (Patroclus) POV all the way till the bitter end. It’s gorgeous from the get-go. Miller’s way with words is exquisite, and her descriptions of gay yearning is *chef finger kiss*. The whole novel feels like a feat of storytelling on its own. And that’s probably because it is one. (Also, one of my weird opinions about this book is that sometimes it feels like what Percy would think if this were an AU of GGtVaV.)
3. Iceman Vol. 1 by Sina Grace and Alessandro Vitti: One of the few Marvel comics I’ve read in recent years. It’s basically Iceman navigating the world as a recently out young mutant, and it focuses on his attempts to date and also balance his identities. It’s a shame it got cancelled too damn early, but what we got was pretty great.
2. Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Saenz: I know everyone and their mother recommends this book for any and every reason possible, but my god are we all right to do so. Benjamin Alire Saenz is one of my favourite authors of all time, and his way with words moves me beyond all measure. Ari and Dante’s romance is an eventual tale of friends to lovers, though, on many levels, they’ve been in love with each other forever. Saenz’s writing is lush and lyrical and captures every emotion possible. His second novel is also great. But this one is sheer magic.
1. Fence by C.S. Pacat and Johanna the Mad: One of BOOM! Studios best series is set at a fencing-obsessed boarding school and tells the extremely slow-burn story of two roommates and rivals (Nicholas and Seiji), as they try and win one of two available spots on the school fencing team. The world is well built and the supporting cast is awesome. The art is so much fun to look at. Side note: It doesn’t follow Nick and Seiji as closely as those two books, but the book is still plenty queer, and there is another guy pining for his best friend, who remind me of Monty and Percy. (Nick and Seiji are very early Alex and Henry.)
Who are your fave SNL comedians and sketches ?
Hey Anon!
This is such an awesome and great question. I used to be a huge SNL fan back in the day (i.e. college), so this is such a fun excuse to go back and relive my favourite sketches! I haven’t actually watched the show much recently, unless Bill Hader is on or hosting, because as you’ll see, he was my favourite cast member.
In terms of my other favourite cast members, I’d have to go with: Andy Samberg (it’s such a close tie for him and Bill), Amy Poehler, Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, Tina Fey, Rachel Dratch, and Seth Meyers.
Here are my top 5 sketches, because otherwise, we’ll be here forever:
5. My Little Stepchildren: Tumblr lost its mind over this sketch, and rightly so. It’s fucking hilarious. I cannot believe it got cut for time. What could have been better than this?
4. Totino’s Pizza Commercial: This one’s also been making the Tumblr rounds for a couple of years, but honestly. That makes sense. The sheer gay power Kristen Stewart emits in this sketch is incredible.
3. Pirate Convention: I’ve been told this is an extremely deep cut by my fellow SNL-loving friends, but the second I saw this sketch I fell in love with it. It’s exactly my brand of humour, and the number of puns in this is *chef finger kiss.* Also I just really love pirates.
2. Stefon’s Farewell: I love Stefon as much as I love Bill Hader, and this farewell to him on his last episode made me cry happy tears. Bless John Mulaney for creating this character. And bless Seth Meyers and Bill Hader for giving us this.
1. Dear Sister: Based on the season finale of The OC, Lonely Island gave me the best birthday gift possible when they wrote and aired this on May 10, 2007. It’s hands down my favourite thing they’ve ever done. And I reference this now-viral meme once daily. (Seriously.)
Do you think the universal hate Nate and Billy get is related to racism or is it just a normal reaction to characters people are not connecting with? I get a little uncomfortable reading everyone's hate directed at these two and Jessie. I even question myself. How is Nate different from Pete, the boring resident hunk? I am sorry if I am using you as a moral guide but something about the reaction makes me uncomfortable.
yes I do have to agree with you. i’d say it’s an unconscious bias. I haven’t seen any actively racist comments, although occasionally there’s a racially charged element to comments made. honestly its just we tend to give white characters the benefit of the doubt, more excuses, a tragic back story, more sympathy.
there are definitely reasons to dislike nate. everyone knows a lad like him and he’s not really had much of a positive introduction, kissing rhona and not being developed as a person beyond “player”. likewise billy has admitted to a crime and caused a lot of problems for his very likeable family
but at the same time they are both attractive men who have mysterious pasts, complex upbringings and this charming bad boy character trope. if they were traditionally attractive white males and had the respectability that comes automatically with whiteness in their voice, mannerisms and experiences they would have a lot more fans and people sticking up for them.
billy would be heralded as a hero for rescuing april from a gunman. nate would more be viewed as a cheeky harmless lad. the reaction being so unanimously hateful is uncomfortable and disheartening but I wouldn’t accuse anyone of racism, its just a learned bias.
we expect and demand black men to perform in a way that is passive and permanently cheerful like ellis or ridiculously comedic like rishi for us to accept them. we don’t want to be reminded of their blackness, their difficulties, their harsher realities so we don’t offer them the same excuses over their past or emotions. instead we’d like to congratulate ourselves for being the moral police for their bad behaviour.
I do think part of this is the writing as well, which is something I keep grappling with. Admittedly, I haven’t watched in a while and so am not familiar with Nate, but I do have issues with how both Ellis and Billy were introduced, wherein they immediately had beef with arguably two of the most beloved and sympathetic queer men on the show. (Matty and Ellis’ altercation was literally on the heels of his extremely sympathetic introduction in which the audience is primed to take his side.)
This then frames Ellis and Billy in terrible lights: Ellis for being violent towards Matty, and Billy for having been part of Aaron’s torture in prison, something we saw in much detail, and then Aaron recounted for us in the moment and in subsequent episodes. Neither is great, and automatically feeds into the stereotype of black men being violent.
Now, you can argue that white characters have been introduced in similar ways, and that’s fine and fair (mostly because I cannot remember any similar/recent introductions). But to do so is to ignore the implications that come with being a person of colour, which in turn brings me back to my main point: hire writers of colour. Because more often than not, we’re more than aware of the dynamics at play and we know how to write and avoid pitfalls.
A lot of the race-based stuff that Emmerdale has tackled has been average at best, and as felt like a primer on issues that most people of colour are more than familiar with. (There is no way in hell that Ellis did not grow up already knowing that part of Jessie’s implicit defence of Billy is because she knows the world has already given him an unfair shake as a young black man. But I do appreciate and commend the effort of trying to educate a larger audience.)
Tl;dr: Are you allowed to dislike characters of colour? Yes. Absolutely! But also examine where your hate is coming from, and also look at the context in which the show might be framing them. (Also, maybe why you have a problem with them, when you’re fine with similar traits and behaviours from a white character.) Jessie defending Billy, while annoyingly repetitive at this point, is not unlike Chas vowing to do whatever it takes to defend Aaron, because he’s her child and she loves him.
Seconding the writing. One of my frustrations with Emmerdale is the way that (with the exception of Billy) race tends to be ignored except when needed for a plot point or set dressing. I mean, the Sharmas could all be replaced by white actors tomorrow and it wouldn’t change a single thing about the way they’re written, because them having brown skin is literally never acknowledged or reflected in the scripts. Like Rishi and Manpreet’s party - lovely Indian outfits all round, but not a single mention of their cultural heritage or what all of it means to them.
Ditto Jessie and the Caribbean wedding. It felt like the show was going ‘ooh, steel drums and rum cake, isn’t that exotic and fun?’ without ever acknowledging in the script what all of that actually means to Jessie. Were her grandparents immigrants? Does she have family in the Caribbean? Given that both of her previous husbands were black, did she have any concerns about marrying Marlon or frustration with the fact that he can’t relate to or fully understand a lot of what she and her sons experience?
For me, there’s a lack of lived/embedded reality in the way race is written on Emmerdale that almost certainly reflects the lack of diversity in the writers room. It feels like most of the time the writers are choosing to write in a completely colour-blind way (I’d bet money the fact that Nate isn’t white will never be mentioned), which undercuts the writing for non-white characters. I mean, I find it massively unrealistic that, say, Rodney hasn’t made an assumption about what sports Ellis is good at, or Bear Wolf hasn’t asked Priya where she comes from ('no, originally’).
I remember when Jessie first made a comment about Billy facing prejudice because he was black, and my first reaction was shock because holy shit, someone actually said it! Lots of people had written meta by that point about what Billy’s experience in prison would have been like as a black man, but I genuinely expected Emmerdale to just ignore it.
(Full disclosure - I don’t like Billy very much, in the sense that I don’t think he’s a very nice person. But I think that he’s interesting, nuanced and well-developed, with both sympathetic and unsympathetic qualities, and I think all of that is much more important for a soap character than being likeable. Jessie I like well enough, although I’m a little frustrated at how shallow she feels after 2 years on the soap - give her a friend! Nate just reminds me of Ross, who I couldn’t stand.)
Oh completely agree! Especially in terms of the Sharmas. Just within the four of them (Rishi, Jai, Priya, and now Manpreet), there should be this huge wealth of experience and perspective that is simply... not there? Does Rishi care what traditions his kids follow? Did Jai, Priya, and Nikhil feel the need to assimilate amongst their peers growing up? And how do Jai and Priya relate to Indian culture? Just between my brother and I there’s a huge difference in how we approach and feel about things — and that’s within one family! (I still find it hilarious that none of them seemed to have an opinion about the pub’s curry night. Though that could be down to no one really being big on cooking.)
I appreciate the effort to bring in more inclusive characters, but it’s not enough to just represent people by the colour of their skin, you have to make an effort to depict their experiences too. Because it’s not just about the number of characters, it’s also about the quality of roles they’re written. (Are they simply wallpaper or do they have their own internal lives? Are they simply background characters or do they affect and drive plot?) For example, while I appreciate Nate being a character of colour, I don’t think it’s the smartest to have him, a black man, be introduced by successively sleeping around with a lot of female characters (this feeding in to another negative stereotype), followed by him breaking up one of the most beloved couples on the soap. On it’s own, it would be okay at best. But right now that’s three black men all brought in as initial antagonists to characters the audience is already rooting for, and as a pattern that’s not great!
It may seem like a lot of little, largely insignificant things, but over time that stuff builds up and can affect how we think and feel about certain issues, because it reinforces biases (negative or positive) we may not know we might have internalised. Soaps have such a wonderful reach in terms of audience, it’s a shame they’re not maximising it as best they can.
aaron in the background is talking about the plot of Black Panther and ending it in a wakanda forever sign
you can’t change my mind
@letthebluerain WAKANDA FOREVER
Robert looks super smitten because it’s just a segue into their discussion about Avengers: Endgame and Robert cannot believe he’s actually sitting here and discussing ten years of Marvel with his husband.
i mean, robert knows that is not exactly the sign, but aaron is trying. also aaron didn’t really care much for infinity war but now that he’s hooked as well, robert smiles knowingly the pain that the next two movies are about to cause. but that is the face of a man who is ready for a marvel movie marathon
Aaron rolled his eyes at the run time for Infinity War, but then came out gutted and annoyed that there wasn’t more.
Robert was already on his phone posting theories about happened during the wait between end credit scenes, and buying them (and Liv) tickets to a second screening.
They both enjoyed the scene with Thor’s arms. Neither of them likes to think about what would happen if they lived in the Avengers universe and Thanos snapped his fingers and the other was taken. (Murder. So much murder.)
robert has refused to watch all the endgame clips and trailers after that first one. liv keeps sending him memes about ant-man. look… LOOK. I am trying so hard not to dwell into my avengers au but it’s my fave thing to think about during the day when i have to do brainless data sorting stuff at work and i just sit there and come up wiht sad shit that i can jam into robert’s avengers au life. it’s fun.
Excuse me, but Robert watched the latest trailer after Liv told him it had a few seconds of Carol meeting Thor. (He also took her — and Aaron — to watch Captain Marvel as a reward for working so hard on her school work.) Both of them flipped out over it, even Aaron kind of joined in. Liv is now planning to name her potential dog, Goose. (Or Chewie after she reads the comics. Robert grows prouder every day.)
But yes. She totally sends him memes about Ant-Man and Thanos. Aaron finds it hilarious and has sent a few of them himself because he knows Robert would never ignore his texts.
A sitcom about the modern Greek gods where everyone is wildly miscast
Zeus is played by Michael Cera
😂😂😂😂 Hephaestus is Nikolaj Coster-Waldau
@seerofbirds has cast Danny DeVito as Aphrodite and @qrowxiii has cast Eddie Murphy as Ares, so this is shaping up to be a pretty great TV pitch and if anyone from Hollywood is reading this, could you also consider casting Dwayne ‘the Rock’ Johnson as Hermes and Christopher Walken as Apollo, thanks.
Hera is Oscar Isaac because are you really going to cheat on Oscar Isaac, Michael Cera? Really? You’d do that? You’d look at that man’s face and chase tail somewhere else, Michael Cera, you sack of shit?
I’m dying this is fantastic I NEED THE WHOLE CAST
Hades is Whoopi Goldberg and Persephone is Jeff Goldblum and Demeter is Julie Andrews. Their interplay makes up 70% of the film and is all improvised.
Athena is played by Amy Schumer (thanks anon!) and she defeats her enemies by being incredibly loud and annoying and plagiarising all their tactics and eventually they just give up in irritation. She only has 3 minutes of screen time and no dialogue. Thank fuck.
Heracles is played by Jesse Eisenberg because Michael Cera got to be Zeus. Sometimes they swap roles. No-one notices.
Poseidon is played by Daniel Craig but his only scene is when he reenacts the famous Bond scene with speedos.
Artemis is played by Robert Pattinson and all his lines are just slightly amended from Twilight. Dionysus is played by Helen Mirren. It is perhaps the only apt casting in the film.
To clarify, Hestia is absolutely played by Charles Dance, whose costume includes an apron which gets progressively dirtier throughout the series.
In the sitcom, which precedes the feature film and which focuses on certain myths every episode, Narcissus is played by John Goodman. Echo is played by Billy Crystal.
Other episodes include the story of Eros and Psyche, played respectively by Jane Fonda and Shirley MacLaine, the story of Daedalus and Icarus, played respectively by Reese Witherspoon and Laura Dern, and the story of Zeus overthrowing Cronus, in which Michael Cera as Zeus must defeat Cronus, as played by John Cena, in a battle of wits and muscle. Astonishingly, he wins.
this is all very good gud
but who is perseus and medusa? jason , Midas, circe, media, please I NEED TO KNOW
These are very important questions and I will answer them immediately.
Perseus and Medusa are played by Andy Samberg and Glenn Howerton. All their scenes together are just them one upping each other with improvised insults.
Jason and Medea are played by John Boyega and Meryl Streep, and all their scenes are so beautifully acted that they both get nominated for Oscars, despite the fact that one of Jason’s lines is “are you trying to fleece me out of the golden fleece?”, to which Medea replies “me, fleece you? Oh no, me dear.”
Midas is played by Steve Buscemi, obviously. For no discernible reason, everything he touches does not turn to gold, but copper alloy. This is possibly due to budget cuts. Due to their on screen chemistry, he bizarrely has several buddy cop style scenes with Jeff Goldblum’s Persephone.
Circe does not appear. If she did, she would be played by Audrey Hepburn, using that creepy CGI from the Galaxy adverts, but her estate refuse to give their permission.
Important updates:
(Anonymous suggests: Kelsey Asbille Chow playing Achilles, Michelle Obama is Thetis, Danny Trejo as Helen, Terry Crewes as Paris, and Adrien Brody as Hector. olvmpos says: Ganymede is played by Arnold Schwarzenegger, and regularly benchpresses Michael Cera.)
Hey @teashoesandhair I’m not saying that I felt inspired and sketched Whoopi Goldberg and Jeff Goldblum as Hades and Persephone but that’s exactly what I’m saying
OH GOD THIS IS PERFECTION. THANK YOU. JUST THANK YOU. PHENOMENAL.
YOU’RE WELCOME BUT ALSO PLEASE HELP COS I CAN’T STOP
THIS IS GOING TO BE THE POSTER FOR THE SERIES, YOU HEAR ME
I’m mad that people are just reblogging the first post here because YOU’RE MISSING OUT ON THE MOST INCREDIBLE ARTWORK YOU’LL EVER SEE
Okay, I gotta ask, who’s the Hyacinthus to Christopher Walken’s Apollo?
I can already hear Apollo’s relevant lines in Walken’s distinct cadence, but I wanna know who he’s cradling, devastated, while crying out in anguish and also pausing at all the wrong places.
What a great question, and it brings me absolute joy to reveal to you that it’s Jackie Chan. He does all his own stunts. There is only one stunt, and it’s him collapsing into Christopher Walken’s arms. For some reason, there are explosions.
Oh my god 🤣
I mean can John Mulaney be Kronos or is that out of the question
It’s the answer to the question we were all asking, frankly. John Cena plays him in all the odd numbered episodes, as above, and John Mulaney plays him in all the even episodes. No-one mentions the difference. Ever.
I also have to recast Athena because I can’t even cast Amy Schumer ironically at this point. Paul Rudd is recast as Athena in episode 2 and no-one ever comments on it.
If Robert HAD gone through with sleeping with Mike, how would Aaron have won him back?
Oh Wow.
This is an excellent question.
Well, first. I think we need to consider Robert’s point of view during that reunion. He was out there, in a gay club no less, trying to make himself get over Aaron. He was trying to convince himself that he could meet other men and that maybe one of them could spark the same kind of feelings, or at the very least, some feelings that would indicate that maybe it was possible to find love and happiness outside of a grumpy mechanic-turned-scrapyard-owner.
When he went back to Mike, it was because he told himself it couldn’t hurt to try. He’d told Aaron he’d get over him, and he’d been trying to do that. But then Valentine’s Day happened and Robert maybe realised that he’d been keeping this sliver of a door open in terms of his getting back together with Aaron. He hadn’t known that he’d been holding out hope, but then he realised that damn, he had after all. Only that’s not possible anymore. Because as far as he knew, Aaron was at home, with Alex, all happy and loved up. He’d imagined everything between them on Valentine’s Day, and worse yet, he’d possibly made Aaron cheat on his boyfriend.
Is it weird that every time I get somewhat interested in a new show or ship, one of my first thoughts is, “Now, I wonder what an AU of this with Robron would look like...”? Like The Magicians, for example
LOL. Nope! It isn’t. I kind of do the same thing with most other media I’m consuming at the time. Sometimes it’s a fit, sometimes it isn’t. It’s all about finding a balance!
With The Magicians, it’s really interesting, because Eliot and Quentin are very much their own characters, but so much of their dynamic can be mapped onto Robert and Aaron. Take for instance just how quickly Eliot opens up to Quentin about killing his bully. He’s barely known him long at all! For me, it’s very much like how Robert started telling Aaron about Lawrence not letting him attend Sarah’s memorial… while they’re in the midst of burgling Home Farm. So the speed and intensity of the connection, is very much there, as is the willingness to open up.
Remember that time Quentin wanted to date Eliot for real but Eliot turned him down because he was afraid of being loved, and Quentin just quietly accepted it because he wanted to keep whatever he could of Eliot in his life and deep down believed he was unloveable anyway? Remember how I'm never going to stop screaming?
Bold of you to think I ever stopped screaming about this, Anon. It was quite literally the first thought on my mind this morning. Because can you believe we lived through that episode???
That whole scene is so fucking incredible because it pretty much takes everything we thought we knew about season 3 and throws it out the window. Or at least, frames it in this new light where every little interaction between Quentin and Eliot is now suffused with this sense of loving but being unable to be with. It’s a lot.
Because look at these three key moments within the season. (There are more, but these are the ones, I’m fixated on.):
On a meta level, how would you say Sarah’s parenting style with Robert has affected the way Robert deals with Liv?
Hi Anon!
So full disclosure: I haven’t watched all too much of Sarah’s time on Emmerdale, though I have read the wiki extensively and I love gifsets of the both of them. (I’m also very lucky in that I get to read the meta of people who have watched when she was on, and are kind enough to answer all my questions about her impact on Robert and Victoria.)
But for me, personally, I think a lot of what we’re seeing now with Robert and Liv is him trying to be the parental figure she kind of needs, something Aaron can’t be because, in many ways, he still wants to be her big brother and friend. And there’s nothing wrong with that! Aaron and Liv should get to have that relationship. If anything, it’s Sandra’s responsibility to raise her. Not Chas. Not Aaron’s. And not Robert’s.
And that’s kind of the beauty of it for me.
What happened in Magicians?
OMG. Anon. Where do I even begin???
J.K. I know where to begin, I literally have not shut up about this for two days now.
WARNING: THIS CONTAINS A WHOLE LOT OF SPOILERS BECAUSE I AM ME AND SOME THINGS CANNOT BE CONTAINED.
So. In season 3, there was no magic in the world, so our heroes had to go on quests to retrieve keys so they could turn magic back on. Part of this quest sent Quentin and Eliot, a pair of best friends and soulmates, back to this magical land called Fillory — only they were sent back to it’s past.
Now here’s where things get super duper romantic. Part of their being there meant they had to solve this giant mosaic puzzle in an attempt to find the “beauty of life.” But as they began to do so, time slowly began to pass and they grew older and kind of slept together (while living in this little cabin in the woods by the mosaic) and then Quentin fell for this woman called Ariel and had a son, with Eliot by their side this entire time.
Unfortunately, Ariel died leaving poor Q a single father, but thankfully he also had Eliot, again, still by his side, and they raised young Ted together, presumably bickering and arguing and loving each other the entire time, until he too was ready to leave the nest and set off into the big wide world. Then, more time passed and Q and Eliot continued to grow old together, all while attempting the mosaic and discussing their lives and their grandchildren. (Because for all intents and purposes, they were a romantic couple now.)
Eventually, Eliot dies in his sleep and poor Q has to bury him. But in doing so he finds the final piece of the puzzle. Because in the end the beauty of life is the fact that he found someone to share all the ups and downs of it with; someone who was his best friend first, but later a lover and a co-parent, and a husband of sorts. It’s staggeringly beautiful. (Fun fact: all of this takes place in 10 minutes and I was a blubbering mess by the end of it.)
Anyway, the spell breaks and they come back to the present where they’re young and Eliot is alive, and their friend is going to get married. Someone, presumably a descendant of Q and Ted’s delivers basket of peaches and plums — a fruit that is significant in that Ariel was selling them when Q met her — and suddenly they remember everything. They remember that they lived all these lives and that they were so damn happy together. But this being The Magicians, means we never got to see them really process all that, because magic still needed bring back.
In any case, throughout the season we saw little nods to them both being close and remembering this relationship because how do you un-remember what is essentially a 50-year plus marriage and the dynamic that forms within that???
But this finally culminates in all the main characters going after this much feared monster and Q deciding he’s going to sacrifice himself because he lived a full life and was happy. Eliot and everyone else has stuff to do and live for. However Eliot cannot stand this thought and so attempts to shoot the monster as Q is befriending it. Unbeknownst to anyone, the monster does not die. It simply jumps into Eliot’s body possessing him.
Finally, magic does come back. But the magical Library wants to monitor and control it, so they take over and in return the Dean of Brakebills (the magic school most of the characters have attended) wiped everyone’s memories and gave them new lives. Only there’s one small problem. The monster in Eliot’s body found Quentin’s new persona, Brian, and decided he wanted him to continue playing with him and helping him with some kind of quest.
In season 4, Quentin regains his memory and then sets about trying to help both his friends and the monster so he can get Eliot back. Sadly, because of all this, he misses his father’s death and the funeral. So he has to clear his father’s airplane collection by himself with the monster by his side. (It’s terrible and also beautiful because it means that even now, even in this, at least Q has Eliot’s presence as a comfort — even if he doesn’t have his mind and soul.) At the end of that episode the monster tells Quentin that Eliot is dead, and that he died the second he entered him. BUT THEN THE EPISODE ENDS WITH US SEEING ELIOT IN THERE SCREAMING FOR HELP.
Now. In this next episode Quentin is going to try and kill this monster, even though it has the face and eyes of the man he loves (both as a friend and something more) while Eliot is going to fight the monster from within him to get a message to Q that he’s alive. It’s everything I could want. It’s them facing a monster to get back to each other and it’s proof of this connection. Because I do think it’s significant that the monster has latched onto Q’s feelings for Eliot, and Eliot’s shared affection for Quentin. It’s seemed positively jealous at points.
Anyway, this episode is going to kick butt for several reasons, the least of which is the fact that Hale Appleman is going to blow our brains with a killer performance and a glimpse into Eliot’s psyche, which is what I am expecting in this next episode. But also a writer for the show said we’d see some scenes (or possibly memories???) from that episode where they essentially lived a life in a day together??? As someone who ships them, it feels so grand, and as a fan of both characters and just the show, it’s so exciting because it means we’ll get more creative storytelling mixed with tropey goodness???
I’m so excited I can’t even dare to dream. I just want to live it and live through it so I can rewatch it again and again on a loop.
Hiya Rust 😊 Probably quite a strange ask but I'll go ahead anyway... Are there any books that you'd recommend reading?? I haven't read a book for my own enjoyment for years and I really want to but I don't know where to start!! I'm going to read Good Omens as I desperately want to read the book before watching the TV show. Any genre's good (apart from horror or romance). If you can't think of any don't worry!! Just thought I'd ask saying I found out about Good Omens from you 😂 x
Charlie! This is such exciting news! I’m so so excited for you. Reading is good (even though I have been so lax about it lately) and Good Omens is truly an excellent book. Come hit me up as you’re reading it! I’m aiming to do a reread before the show premieres on May 31st!
But let's get you some other book recommendations! (I tried to keep these kind of general and across the board in the hopes that you’ll find at least one thing you’ll like? If not, please do come back and tell me. That way I can generate a new list!)
CORALINE: I don’t know how familiar you are with Neil Gaiman’s writing, or even this book (or the movie based on it), but I figured I’d throw at least one book on here by him, because he really hasn’t produced any clunkers. This is just a really good story about being brave and facing your fears -- something I feel is relevant in your college years. (And at various other points in your life!) You might also want to check out his book Stardust, and the excellent movie based on it.
HIS DARK MATERIALS: This iconic trilogy from Philip Pullman is easily three of my favourite books, and they get better each time I reread them. It starts as the story of a young girl setting out to rescue her friend and grows into something much larger. It seems meant for kids, but to me feels universal, and each time I’ve reread it, I’ve come away with new meaning. I hope it does the same for you.
GENTLEMAN’S GUIDE TO VICE AND VIRTUE: A historical YA novel that tells the story of Henry “Monty” Montague, a young bisexual disaster of a man who is hopelessly in love with his best friend, Percy. It’s one of my favourite books of all time, and has a modern sensibility to it as it examines sexuality, gender, and race in that time. One of my favourite characters in it, Felicity, happens to be asexual and is the lead of her own novel, Ladies Guide to Petticoats and Piracy. (Which I also adored.) [Side note: There is a romance in this, but it isn’t of the “romance” genre, which is what I took you to mean.]
SIX OF CROWS: The first part of a duology (the second is called Crooked Kingdom), that is basically a heist novel. It’s tense, action-packed, and filled with an inclusive cast, each of whom is my children and I would die for them. Netflix is adapting both books, as well as Leigh Bardugo’s trilogy, which is set in the same universe as this, so it’ll be nice to get a jump on that!
ARISTOTLE AND DANTE DISCOVER THE SECRETS OF THE UNIVERSE: I have yet to meet someone who didn’t love this book, which is about two young Mexican boys growing up in, I think, the 80s and their friendship as they discover who they are and what it means for their friendship and each other. The coming of age story the author weaves is super tender and very heartfelt, but what really sings is his wriing. He’s an incredible author and you just feel everything he describes. I feel like this one really stayed with me.
CUCKOO’S CALLING: The first Cormorran Strike novel has a great mystery at its heart and is a fine introduction to Strike and his partner Robin. It’s a nice reminder that Rowling can write a very good mystery and that she makes it all seem effortless. (I also breezed by all the books in the series during a rough reading patch, and I feel like that might help you.) This has also since been adapted.
THIRTEENTH TALE: It’s part mystery, part examination of the tales we tell ourselves and what stories can mean and how they can guide us. I love it so much, and I read it one fell swoop. The writing is quite lush and she sucks in you effectively. It’s about a young woman asked to write a biography of this older woman, and her days spent doing that. Olivia Colman starred in the BBC movie of it. I quite enjoyed that too.
NIGHT CIRCUS: I always pair this one with the one above, because I read them the same summer and they both just took me by the hand and made my heart run. But this is more romantic fairy tale fantasy, about two dueling magicians who are trying to prove what is better, nature vs. nurture while outdoing each other with magic tricks, while falling deeper and deeper in love with each other. It’s incredible.
GIANT DAYS: This is a comic, but it’s one of my absolute favourites in that I fucking pay to get each issue as it comes rather than waiting for a collected volume. The pop culture references are on point and John Allison is a wiz with humour, but I think the thing I love most is just how relatable it is on so many levels. You get the joys and pain and humour and ridiculousness of friendships and college life and I think it’ll really speak to you. (Also, Daisy’s coming out is rather nice.)
SAGA: I had to take a break from reading it because I just sat around thinking about how good this comic series is. There’s a reason it wins so many awards, and that’s because it’s just masterful. The art is exquisite, and the writing top notch, and I fall in love with it more every time I read it. I can’t sum it up accurately. But just know that it’s about love and family and doing what you have to in order to survive in the face of a universe that wants you apart. It’s gorgeous. (Also, kind of a space opera.)
Can we talk about Robert’s relationship with Chas and Paddy? Because that development honestly takes my breath away
It’s insane because they warned Aaron off him several times, and then he straight up attempted to kill both of them. But as time has worn on, his sheer love and devotion to Aaron has shown them just how ride and die Robert is for him, thus allowing them to feel some respect, concern, and affection for him as well?
Paddy covered for Robert as he fled the Mill post-Valentine’s last year and then stood in that kitchen probing Aaron about his clearly still lingering feelings. Chas helped put together their dream wedding ceremony, even down to the tabletop decorations of their dreams! They cancelled their trip because Robert nearly died, and paid for their extended marital sexcapade honeymoon. Now they’re sat there telling them that they should be patient and that they will have more kids.
Yes and I’m sure Chas didn’t believe Robert when he said that that Aaron was everything to him, but Robert proved himself… then after the reunion happened and Aaron told them at the pub… they weren’t really surprised… because they knew that it would happen. They knew that they would find their way back to each other… it was only a matter of time.
And the second proposal? When Robert went to Chas and Paddy to have their blessing… I mean…. Chas was genuinely happy for them,
Then when Aaron didn’t bring Seb back and they had that row, and Paddy heard everything, and then he gave advice to Robert??? I mean PADDY GAVE ADVICE TO ROBERT? Like that happened…. on screen….. and don’t even get me started on their wedding and how Chas said that Aaron hit the jackpot with Robert….
I have lots and lots of feels about these things.
I always try and give them some leeway because they didn’t see the extent of what we saw, you know? Chas wasn’t there when Aaron collapsed at the scrapyard and she never saw the worry in Robert’s eyes and what it took for him to finally be able to say the word “boyfriend” in regards to Aaron, even if it was a lie to a nurse to simply confirm his whereabouts. (Oddly enough, Chas did get a front row seat to Robert’s worry post first engagement, when Aaron nearly died, and even how much it tore Robert up when Aaron was in prison.)
But I do love that they’ve accepted the inevitability of Robert and Aaron’s relationship. It’s why I can never really hate Alex. (Don’t get me wrong, I do not enjoy him.) He was proof that you could give Aaron the most perfect man on paper, but his heart will always choose Robert. He’ll always pick him, because on so many levels, it’s something they’ve both had to fight for; against each other, the world, and themselves. And I like to think that Paddy and Chas, a couple who has had to face their own share of ups and downs, sees and respects that.
Part of the reason they were so happy for Robert and Aaron is probably that they get to see Aaron and Robert really putting in the effort -- and not just on themselves, but in terms of Liv and Seb and making sure they’re cared for as well. This time they went in more than aware that they had all kinds of baggage (they even had Gerry living on the sofa!) but they kept talking and listening and working on it, and at the end of the day that’s all either Chas or Paddy could want in terms of a partner for their son: someone who knows how amazing Aaron is and is willing to put in that effort. So in many ways, Aaron and Robert have both hit the jackpot, and Chas and Paddy were just stating the obvious!
Hii lovely!! This took me so long but here are some show recommendations, bear in mind I'm terrible at this stuff: Fringe, Smallville (You seem to really like superhero shows and movies and Smallville was a factor in me loving DC), BBC Class (Charlie and Matteusz plus getting to see Peter Capaldi as 12 was amazing I wish it'd gone on longer), SYFY's Haven. (I feel like you'd really like all these shows so hopefully, you do if you ever get a chance to watch them) Have you heard of any of these?
OMG. First of all. You’re an absolute dear to come up with recs for me! I appreciate this so, so much. Second of all, I feel absolutely terrible because not only have I watched all of these but I love all of these???
Fringe is one of my all-time favourite science fiction shows. The writing is a bit wobbly here and there, but I lived for the Peter- Olivia romance, and John Noble turns in a hell of a performance across those five seasons. NOT TO MENTION GENE THE COW, WHO IS THE BEST THING EVER???
Smallville was such a blast to watch when it was on. (I was lucky enough to watch it in real time as it aired.) That version of Lois Lane and her chemistry with Clark Kent (one of my all-time OTPs) is great and I loved that she was her own character and had so much great agency as a reporter and a character. (I sometimes just go back and rewatch their scenes together because it’s a really well-done romance.)
I devoured Class when it was on. Patrick Ness is one of my favourite authors is there was no way I wasn’t watching that show! I love how gay and inclusive it was on so many fronts. Kind of wish those two characters I adored hadn’t died, but yeah. That ending was such a good cliffhanger and that show deserved more. #LeSigh.
Okay. So. I fucking adore Haven. No joke, I own the OST for it because I’m that hardcore into it. Beyond that, it’s the basis of all my internal fantasies in that I want to move to a small coastal town in Maine and solve supernatural-related crimes while having a slow burn romance with the local sheriff. (In my fantasies, I actually live in the lighthouse and have a bunch of dogs and no one ever really dies.) But yeah, that show had a bit of a wonky, but overall solid mythology and I really dug Nathan and Audrey’s romance. (The idea of a character who feels nothing being able to only feel one specific person because they’re immune to all else is a soulmate AU and I’m so here for it.) I was also really into Nathan and Duke’s friendship, which I thought had an interesting because there was so much damn history there. It’s also probably my favourite Stephen King adaptation in that they really do explore and examine a lot of his chief themes from their lens. God. I might go rewatch everything.
PLEASE TELL ME YOU HAVE WATCHED ALL OF THESE YOURSELF???
OMG are we the same person?? I’m so glad you love all these shows too.
Of course I’ve seen all these shows and I completely agree. Near the end Fringe got hella confusing but I’ve rewatched the begining so many times. When Peter finds out what Walter did and how he’s not technically his son. It made me forever treasure anytime he called Walter dad because although Walter could screw up a lot of the time he really did love Peter. Peter and Olivia re one of my all time favorite relationships because they just fit. I don’t even know how to describe it.
Smallville just was written so wonderfully. I watched it when it was still airing and I just absolutely love where they went with Clark and Tom Welling to me will always be Superman m he was cast so we’ll and I really enjoyed how we got to see his character grow and evolve to the Superman we know. Lois Lane was an absolute treasure she was badass and snarky and I loved her. I really enjoyed how their relationship evolved from being friends and her support for what he does. I also loved that he didn’t learn to fly until the end of the show and that we got to see Kara and her struggling to fit in and teach Clark about Kripton.
Class was strange but I really enjoyed most of it but detained has to be my all time favorite episodes because we get to see them having to confess some of their inner most thinking without being able to control the context and we get to see how it leads to the finale and them all being separated which was brilliant. We also got to see Charlie struggling with being in a confined space and the realization that his boyfriend’s and friends think he’s strange and they don’t fully understand what he’s been through. The secene where he uses that cabinet of souls was so heartbreaking because you could tell he really didn’t want to use it but he knew that if he didn’t good people would end up dead. Then the scene where he shot April so that he could become the shadow king and insure that the planet wouldn’t be wiped out.
I also watched Haven live and I fell in love with Nathan and Audrey because same the fact that he can feel her touch and no one else is the stuff of soulmates. His friendship with Duke and the evolution that it goes through throughout the series is major becuasebit shows how both of them as characters have grown. Like how Nathan hot the tattoo because he knew that someone with the tattoo would kill Duke and in the end he did but it was in such a different context and it pained him to have to do that. The ending where Audrey comes back as someone else because she knows that no matter who she is or who’s memories she had she will always love Nathan was beautiful. I’m still so bitter that we never got to find out anything else about the Colorado Kid/ James because he was their son and neither of them got the opportunity to be with him.
Haha I really love that you’ve also heard of these. I tried to think of shows that would appeal to you based on what I know you like so I’m very glad that you’re also a huge fan and I now also have the urge to rewatch all of these shows.
Hey! @fireangel5683 (Sorry about the late response!)
But yesssss. Omg. Peter’s slow acceptance of Walter as his dad and our Walter doing his best to be a good father was so moving. The season finale made me cry so hard when they had that moment acknowledging all that. (Or at least I vaguely remember a moment like that?)
I think we might be the same person because I loved all those things about Smallville as well! I know some people were annoyed that he didn’t fly earlier, but I thought saving it for the end was perfect. It showed Clark growing into becoming a hero and being inspired by Lois and her desire to be a great journalist.
Class had some great issues at the centre of it which I wish they could have explored further? Like I loved that Charlie had that decision to make. It was such a hard one but such a compelling one to watch? I was literally just thinking about that episode last week where they explore what it means to have faith or something like that? (I think it was the second last episode?) I also appreciate that despite everything Charlie and Mattieusz were able to have a happy and sweet relationship. (I’m a big fan of queer people getting happy genre-adjacent romances.) Man... the more I think about the show the sadder I am that they didn’t get a second season.
And OMG. Haven. It’s SO exciting to meet someone else who can talk about this! And yes! Nathan and Duke’s growth is definitely one of the things I think about when I look back on the show. I love that Nathan was the one who eventually killed him, because it was so full circle and the only way it could go. Gah! And as you mention it, I just realised the other thing that I love about Nathan and Audrey: they literally are soulmates who fall for each other no matter what? Like how he went back in time and Sarah fell for him too? (And of course Audrey’s new self! I also dug that they got a second chance with James again because they didn’t get a chance to raise him?)
A thing I used to think about the season finale after Audrey went into the Barn was if it would have given Audrey time to get to know James since his existence and hers were so tied to it? I used to headcanon the possibility of James and her revisiting her past lives and both of them getting to know each other as they figured out how to get back to Nathan. I’m mostly satisfied with the Colorado Kid stuff, and I’m actually quite happy with how everything wrapped up (all the troubles going back) but I don’t know if I was satisfied by all the stuff about Audrey’s mother and father?
:O HOW DARE YOU NOT BE IN LOVE WITH HOW Q CORONATES HIS FUTURE LIFE PARTNER: I BELIEVE IN YOU, EL. AND THEN ELIOT CLASPING Q'S HAND AND HIS FOREARM IN THE LOVING BOND OF TRUST BETWEEN THEM. HONESTLY, MY LORD, WHO ARE YOU AND WHY ARE WE FRIENDS. (I considered uncapslocking but I wanted you to know how upset I was. Goodbye.)
NO. LOOK. YOU’RE VERY RIGHT AND VALID. I HAVE BEEN A BLIND, BLIND FOOL.
BUT.
We need to take into consideration that this was two years ago. Two years ago Me was a real dumbass. They were also convinced they were straight and cisgendered. L O L. But more importantly, because of the way I consumed media and the way queer ships used to be considered a “crack” pairing, it never occurred to me that this could be a real thing. It’s why I take such care and pay so much attention to all that now. A lot of my growth and development came from the realisation of “Oh wait. I feel that way. Why can’t that be valid?” (Honestly, I was also not Q’s biggest fan because I saw too much of myself in him and was like, “OH GOD THESE ARE MY WORST BITS.” But now I’m in a place where I’m actually proud of him and his journey because he grows and matures so much and I would fight anyone who hurts a hair on that floppy haired sweetheart. Two years is such a long time. DAMN.)
But also, I cannot state this hard enough, you really cannot underscore how much a dumbass I was. I just hide it better now.
BUT YES. IN REWATCHING THAT YOU CANNOT HELP BUT NOTICE HOW INCREDIBLY ROMANTICALLY LOADED THAT SCENE IS. IT’S SUCH A THING THAT THEY LOVE AND TRUST EACH OTHER SO WHOLLY LIKE THAT. I LOVE IT SO MUCH. AND I LOVE THAT THE SHOW HAS NEVER SHIED AWAY FROM SHOW THAT AFFECTION. THEY’RE ALWAYS SO SOFT AND TACTILE WITH EACH OTHER. I LOVE THAT SCENE WHERE Q WANTS TO TALK ABOUT THEM SLEEPING TOGETHER BUT ELIOT IS JUST LIKE “DON’T OVERTHINK THIS.” BECAUSE HE WANTS HIM TO TRUST THAT THINGS WON’T CHANGE BETWEEN THEM. BECAUSE HE’S ALWAYS LOVED HIM AND CARED FOR HIM WHY WOULD THIS CHANGE ALL THE OTHER STUFF. HE’S USED TO A RELATIONSHIP LIKE THAT WITH MARGO, THE INTERMINGLING OF SEX AND FRIENDSHIP, BUT QUENTIN AND ALICE FELL APART AFTER SEX AND SO OF COURSE HE’D BE NERVOUS. (Did I remember that right? God I wish I could rewatch just them together. You’ll have to be my memory going forward.)ALSO WHERE HE JUST NEEDS A HUG AND HE SPECIFICALLY ASKS FOR ONE FROM Q. LIKE QUENTIN HAS ALWAYS BEEN A SOURCE OF COMFORT.
P.S. The fact that I was blind to all this should tell you how dumb I was.
AND ELIOT ASKED Q TO TOUCH HIS BUTT. But it comes off the back of him saying, you can’t touch a king without his permission, pls hug me Q. Yeah, it’s to break the tension, to bring back the ease between them, but it shows that what Eliot said was true, he bonds quickly and time is an illusion. BUT, he’s also selective about who he bonds to. He doesn’t want Penny to touch his butt, or Alice, or Josh. Just Q. Maybe Margo if he can’t sleep and he needs her to hold his butt, IDK. I just imagine that’s what she’d do for him.
AND OH MY, OT, it reminds me of when Margo says after 2 months without dick she sounds like Quentin, but it could also be she sounds like Quentin after he’s had no dick in 2 months. (It’s canon that Q thinks people should think about dicks)
AND SOMETHING ELSE THAT’S BEEN BUGGING ME. Alice says that Q is the one she loves and he leans in to accept her kiss BUT he doesn’t say anything back. During Under Pressure, his part that he’s singing with her is about two hearts separated and that could be about them but it could just as easily be about him and El.
None of what I’m saying has relevance to what you’re saying which is probably why I’m the Eliot to your Q. You’re talking about horcruxing and I’m over here whore-crotching.
