i learned that researchers historically have avoided using female animals in medical studies specifically so they don’t have to account for influences from hormonal cycles. This may explain why women often don’t respond to available medications or treatments in the same way as men do (x)
guess what: this is not only bad for women, but futile in general. Male mice kept in the same enclosure will generally fall into a pack with an alpha male, whose testosterone levels are up to five TIMES higher than lower ranking male mice (summarized, paywall). btw, female mice kept in the same enclosure will form a less “despotic hierarchy” (quoting the study) and, importantly, higher and lower ranking female mice do not exhibit the same range of hormonal differences, although they do exhibit different times in estrus.
this idea that women, (and females from any species) are more hormonally driven than males, is one based in sexism. its origin is not from science, but is instead an example of how cultural ideals influence the seemingly objective and impersonal field of science. There isn’t some magical law of the universe that means that we have to drive cars that weren’t built for our safety and comfort, or that we should have to rely on medicine that wasn’t developed for our health.
And btw most women (by which I mean human females) were banned from being on drug trials until well into the 1990s. You can thank HIV/AIDS activists for that reversal. They brought this disparity into the light and actively agitated for a change in how drug studies were conducted. We’re still not at parity, btw, because women are now simply allowed to participate in drug trials, but drug trials are not required to include women.
"Ok, ma'am that'll be 226.03$."
I take my wallet out of my pocket and unfold it. It is empty other than a single moth that lazily flies out. The moth lands on the tap point of the card reader. There's a beat, and my payment is processed. The moth flies back into my wallet and I put it back in my pocket.
