rules for teaching

"Please tell me there's a website somewhere that keeps track of all the crazy shit you say." --enough people to push me to do this tumblr. I teach at a fashion school. My students average 20-24 years old. Sometimes our conversations get a little ridiculous. Tutorials and fashion + design + making related stuff over at @zoehong.

Hey y’all, just a reminder: it’s sex favorable, sex neutral, and sex repulsed.

Sex positive and sex negative refer to something else entirely and it completely changes what you say.

Sex favorable: “I would like to have sex”

Sex neutral: ranges from “I am indifferent to potentially having sex” to “sex? Involving me? Oh no thank you.”

Sex repulsed: “the very concept of sex is a trigger for me. I cannot consume media or participate in conversations involving it.”

Sex positive: “people should be free to have sex whenever and with whomever they like free of shame.”

Sex negative: “having sex makes you a shameful and dirty person. No one should have sex outside of a traditional hetersexual marriage.”

But imagine if you lived in a country where the color of your skin got you killed for driving, jogging, sleeping, yelling, parking, babysitting, sitting in a van, selling CDs, selling cigarettes, opening the door, walking at night, wearing a hoodie at night, holding a toy gun, lying on the ground, being homeless, being in a dark stairwell, holding a cell phone, having a broken taillight, exercising horses, having a bottle of pills, shopping at Walmart, holding a BB gun at Walmart, holding a phone in your own backyard, eating ice cream in your own house, and shopping, you would say, “That is a lawless country.”

So I used to make fun of this guy for using the same face over and over. And you know what? Kudos on this made for actually taking the criticism and breaking out of his rut.

This is also terrifying and I hate it.

“Kudos for actually taking the criticism and breaking out of his rut.“

Except it wasn’t criticism, it was constant daily harassment. Look, I’ve been making comics for the internet for 10 years. I made comics for BuzzFeed for about two years, but people love to focus on those comics for some reason. They were simpler and quicker because I needed to publish at least one thing a day. And I loved it! I learned a lot!

At some point when I was getting really popular, Reddit and Tumblr decided they’d had enough and launched a targeted campaign against me. Tried to doxx me multiple times. Sent death threats. 4Chan threads started popping up for the sole purpose of spreading rumors that I’m a pedophile. All because I was making “lazy” comics and getting a salary for it.

Also, it’s always the same 10 or so comics that got posted as proof of my laziness. I made 1,008 comics at BuzzFeed (I counted). I worked really hard for my extremely mediocre salary.

Now that I’ve left BuzzFeed and don’t have deadlines anymore, I can spend more time on comics and only draw things I’m passionate about (like my dick). But make no mistake—if you like my stuff now, it’s because I pushed myself so hard as BuzzFeed. I’m not better now because of the “criticism” I got from trolls on the internet. Don’t fucking take credit for that.

One of the funniest failures of US school system is the fact they are legally obligated to teach us all the states but they never actually show how big Alaska is like I have actually had teachers tell me that Texas is the biggest state. We have all just convinced ourselves that Alaska is that small shrunken down thing on most US maps and the people that know it's the largest state can almost never accurately describe how large it is.

For context here is a picture

what

It has a national park that’s bigger than maine. Or Switzerland. A park.

I lived in Alaska for two years and I will never get over the sheer overwhelming bigness of it.

Nights where the sky is clear you can see clusters of stars or the Northern Lights dancing. When the lights are rippling especially strong and fast you can hear a static crackle in the air. When the moon is out after it’s snowed, you don’t need flashlights to see. Everything glows and glimmers like polished quartz.

But when the sky is clouded over so you can’t see the stars, you can kind of almost sense the mountains towering over you and helping to block out the light, these giant monoliths acting like this void darker than your soul. I’ve never experience night like Alaska night.

Everything is big, the mountains, the sky, the valleys.

And the dark.

Captain Croziers' former crew gives him a warm send-off April 3, 2020

Navy's reason for the firing: Crozier went outside the chain of command when he pleaded for help after about 100 of his crew tested positive for the coronavirus. As of Friday morning, 137 sailors aboard the ship have now tested positive for the virus.

His own people state it was properly sent up the chain of command, the leak was higher up than him.

He’ll always be the Captain that did his duty to save the lives he was responsible for. He’s earned that respect and nothing will ever change that.

there are white men don’t wash their asses because they think it’s gay, half of you people don’t take your filthy goddamn shoes off in your own house and track street dirt and dog shit into your own homes and others don’t know how to clean your damn legs properly in the shower. whites don’t get to talk about Chinese people’s hygiene until you learn to reign in that kind of sociopathy and stop bringing back polio

white people talking about how “new pandemics always come from china” thinking they’re so smart, while ignoring that the proximity to farmland, agriculture and population density in rural areas is like several times that of Europe, Australia and USA. like stop acting as if y'all didn’t literally commit genocide by introducing the flu and go feed herbal tea your unvaxxed kids, karen

lol so this is gaining notes and making whites cry so let me explain this.

the virus spread the way it did because of collosal government mismanagement borne from nothing more than pride, bureaucracy and stupidity. The local Wuhan government have been dragged by the hair by the media and its citizens for censoring the announcement not giving the hospitals enough support to prepare for the sheer scale of the outbreak. The doctors who blew the whistle as early as December, when the outbreak could have been managable, were detained and social media posts were censored. patients were not given enough information or systemic support to even glimpse how serious it was. No one was taking safety measures and now hospitals and staff are stretched thin.

This post is, in no way or form, diminishing the blame from the government.

HOWEVER. The primary narrative among white twitter and fearmongering gossip rags has been to dehumanise Chinese people as virus-bearing hordes crossing the border to infect everyone they touch. There’s been an increase in racial violence across US, Europe and Australia and a humanitarian crisis is being used to enforce and justify exclusion, fascist rhetoric, and harsh border policies.

The discourse around sanitation and how it’s been weaponised against racialised bodies has long been a tool of white supremacists to enact racial violence, dehumanisation, and oppressive measures, and it’s up to poc to activately push back on those narratives and call out those double standards.

The narrative that the nCov spread purely because of Chinese cultural practises rather than incompetent government fuckup and repression is fascist rhetoric. It is purely based on white violence and enables far-right rhetoric.

A couple things here…

1. How do you suppose the 1960 conservatives would react to the idea of a President who has close ties to the leader of Russia? What would they say about the fact that so many of his followers are literal Nazis?

2. If AOC appeared to be a lunatic to 1960 Americans, it would be because the principle thing she advocates for–the 70% marginal tax rate–was policy at that time. So she’d be running around going “Marginal tax rates should be 70%!” and everyone would go “…yes? They are? Shouldn’t you, a sitting member of Congress, know that?”

The marginal tax rate in 1962 was 87% percent.

That’s how the 1960s had the money to build highways and go to the fucking moon.

Gender reveal parties, and big planned reveals, literally were not a thing ten, fifteen years ago. Don’t let anyone pull that “it’s a tradition!” crap on you, youngsters. They’re LYING. People would either get the ultrasound or not to find out about the genitals, and tell people or not. That was that.

The fuss over “revealing” a baby’s gender in utero stinks of pushback against the shift toward a more nuanced understanding of gender. I mean yeah part of it is social media, and trends catching on, but don’t think for a minute this isn’t part of some regressive attitudes creeping into the mainstream with a cute (blue or pink) bow on it.

Even the woman who helped popularize gender reveal parties is like…slow your roll, fam.

She only had a gender reveal party because it was her first pregnancy that made it to a gender pregnancy scan. All her others had been miscarriages. She was only celebrating a pregnancy milestone!

that…..is a super valid reason for a party.

Wow, i did not expect that to be the reason this all started. Im so happy for her.
