Well I'm not at Comic Con this year but all the talk about it is making me think about it.
Here's one of my favorites from a past SDCC--2008, I think. Toph bending Iron Man. xD
Toph Bei Fong (Avatar: The Last Airbender)
Waughh I want to rewatch Avatar again. OK costume write-up time....!
BACKSTORY: I had just finished a marathon Avatar: The Last Airbender since friends said it was good and I should watch it. This was right before the 3rd season started so it was good timing. xD I was told I should cosplay as Toph and I finally did. CONSTRUCTION: I honestly don't...remember what I did. (This will the the most useless costume write-up.) LOL OK I finished this thing pretty quickly. As for patterns, I think I used a simple pants pattern and shirt pattern and just attached them together for the green part. And I just made up what to do for the yellow part. Pretty sure I used that simple shirt pattern as a base. Many of us have said the Avatar-world clothes are KINDA WEIRD and wouldn't attach like that in real life. xD I still remember some cosplay interview a few of us did for someone. I believe I was with Caitlin and Karen. One question was how long it took for us to finish our costumes. Caitlin and Karen spoke about how this or that took a while so these were on going projects. My answer: "A DAY" The cuffs were all pretty easy, but I need to fix those. WIG: I sort of cheated by using a wig I already had. My original plan was to have a black wig for a base, stub it, and use the extra hair I cut off to wrap around styrofoam and make the huge bun thing she has. But then I discovered my old Hinata (Naruto) wig was the perfect shape for Toph's bun. So I still used a long black wig as a base, pulled it back and stubbed it and then formed my old wig around the back. (I hot glued it and pinned it like crazy.) It works! But this also makes it pretty heavy so I have to use so many bobby pins to keep it on my head.
PERSONAL THOUGHTS: Toph is an AWESOME character. I love her. But I never thought I looked very good in this cosplay. I don't know why. (I just don't look good in black wigs in general, maybe that's it?) But it's been a while since I've worn it so I'd like to wear it again at some point, since it is fun to wear. It needs some minor fixes. At some point friends talked about doing a fire nation group and I had wanted to make that outfit someday too. FUN FACT: At AX 2008, my friends and I ran into the guy who voiced some character in a prison in one of the episodes. Can't remember all the details now. We were wearing our Avatar cosplays and he took a pic with his phone and sent it to the guys who made the show, saying something like, "They love this kind of stuff!" We all thought that was kinda cool. xD
