Today, we mourn Bernard Hill (King Theoden). May he rest among the halls of his father 😔

Arise now, arise, Riders of Théoden!

Dire deeds awake: dark is it eastward.

Let horse be bridled, horn be sounded!

Forth Eorlingas!

Arise, arise, Riders of Théoden!

Fell deeds awake: fire and slaughter!

Spear shall be shaken, shield be splintered,

a sword-day, a red day, ere the sun rises!

Ride now, ride now! Ride to Gondor!

Swa begnornodon Rohirrim leode hlafordes hryre, heorðgeneatas Cwædon þæt he wære wyruldcyning, manna mildust monðwærust, leodum liðost, lofgeornost.

LeVar Burton Is Still Fighting For Your Right to Read

In an age of unprecedented book bans, the actor and literacy advocate is going to the mat for the freedom to read. "America loves to live in the shadows," he says, "but we're living in an age when the truth wants to come out."

by Adrienne Westenfeld

Nearly two decades after PBS’s long-running series went off the air, the Reading Rainbow generation is all grown up. Their love of reading and knowledge is an enduring gift, courtesy of host LeVar Burton and the show’s producers—but in an age of unprecedented assaults on the freedom to read, what’s to become of today’s young readers in the making? As ever, Burton is looking out for them. The actor and literacy advocate recently served as the honorary chair of Banned Books Week, an annual October event dedicated to raising awareness about attempts to remove reading materials from libraries, schools, and bookstores. Now, he’s making his second appearance as the host of the National Book Awards, where “censorship” will no doubt be the word on every honoree’s lips. “I've put in work in this field; I've put in time on these issues,” Burton told Esquire. “I'm happy to be the face of it and represent it, because these are matters that I care deeply about.”

Great interview, worth the read.

"The whole idea of Americans being in control of their own bodies, their own minds, and their own destinies is a political issue, which is weird, given the fundamental underpinnings of the creation of this nation. But here we are, having this conversation about bodily autonomy, what kids should read, and what we should think. For me, it's a fight worth fighting. It's not only a conversation worth having. It's a fight worth fighting... The fight for reproductive freedom is tied to the effort to ban books. They're definitely linked. What we're looking at is authoritarian control, and that's just not part of the charter."

Hi, Odin. Lately I've been hearing a lot about "toxic femininity" and I was wondering what were your thoughts on it? Thanks, I love your blog and have a great day.

I think that “toxic femininity” is just new, updated lingo from meninists and anti-feminists who believe that misandry is a real thing.

It’s bullshit.

It’s as ignorant as believing that “reverse racism” against white people is a real thing. (hint: it isn’t).

”Toxic femininity” is like saying “All Lives Matter” whenever someone says Black Lives Matter.

Usually whenever I see someone on social media using that term, it’s from a mra group, or so-called eGaLiTaRiANs, who also don’t believe in intersectional feminism and womanism. Or, it’s usually from fragile ass men who didn’t ever think that men were “under attack” until women started standing up for themselves.

At best, and this is me being highly charitable, “toxic femininity” is really women who have adopted toxic masculinity.

Sorry, but I am not here for people who think that men and women, “both sides,” have it “equally” bad. That’s bullshit. Imma guy, and even as a Black man, I’m here to tell you that, yes, it is still a man’s world. The world was made to cater to men, and the problems that men face are not nearly as desperate, nor are they as bad as those faced by women.

This is not to say that men don’t face any pressures at all, but most of our issues stem from (wait for it) toxic masculinity & inflexible patriarchal norms that are most often enforced by (wait for it again) other men.

And this isn’t me saying that all women are good and pure, while all men are bad and evil. There are terrible people everywhere. Clarence Thomas, Bill Cosby and Diamond & Silk are terrible black people, who hate Black people. Log Cabin Republicans are terrible LGBTQ people, who frequently work against Gay rights. Margaret Thatcher and Ann Coulter are terrible women, who promote sexism and misogyny (wait, I know one of those two are dead, right?). None of these facts change the other facts that racism is evil, and white / male privilege are real things that are harmful and really do exist. It doesn’t change the fact that intersectional feminism is good & necessary, and meninism is a fucking joke . This does not change the fact that water is wet, up is up, and down is down.

If a gazelle gets lucky one time and manages to kill a lion, that doesn’t mean that we suddenly need “lions rights” groups to protect lions from gazelles.

Anyway, that’s that on that. You have a great day too.

Interview With Jamison Green. Originally posted on Youtube, by Dr. Lindsey Doe.

TRANSCRIPT: [Jamison Green sitting on a couch, being interviewed by Dr. Doe. He is wearing a suit shirt and a black jacket, and has a grey beard.] JAMISON: When I first transitioned, I thought I was going to go get a sex change, then go home and mow my lawn. I did not ever imagine that my life would change at all, because already people- at least half the time, sometimes more- thought I was male. And so, I figured nothing was going to change, I would just feel more comfortable in my body. I realised that there were all these other people out there who were living in fear and shame, because of their differences. And I thought, that is not right. And so I said to them, I’m going to start using my full name in public, and I’m going to start talking about who we are. Don’t be afraid to change in all kinds of ways. Your self can change. [Jamison and the interviewer high-five.] INTERVIEWER: I’m impressed by what you’ve done. JAMISON: Thank you. END TRANSCRIPT.

Jamison Green was born in 1948. He came out as a trans man the late 1980s and made his transition public, for the benefit of others. He has been an activist since then, and led the FTM community after Lou Sullivan's death.

His contributions to trans rights have been largely erased by mainstream narratives around trans history.

Mr. Green wrote the book Becoming a Visible Man, exploring his experiences as a bisexual trans guy, his relationships with lovers and family, and his struggle to transition. He was involved in the 2012 documentary TRANS, where he advocated on behalf of trans people, and discussed his experiences with being s*xually assaulted.

Excerpt:

If I were a Native American, I doubt I could accept the neutral, judgment-free approach about the relocation, the decimation of the Indigenous population. If I were a Black American, I doubt I could accept a neutral, judgment-free approach on the enslavement of millions of Americans.

“But I’m Jewish, and I cannot accept a neutral judgment-free approach on the murder of 6 million Jews in World War Two.”

Schwartz, whose Teton County district includes the city of Jackson, said that, to understand the depth of depraved actions, one must be discomfited by them.

“Going to page 8, lines 19 and 20, it says ‘no one should feel discomfort or distress,'” he said. “But in learning about the Holocaust, I have suffered a lifetime of discomfort and distress, and it’s essential that as students learn about this dark time in our history, they to feel discomfort in distress.”

also i just don't get how you can teach a genocide without judgements being formed? like any human being who is given the facts is going to respond with 'oh wow this was a calculated attempt to exterminate an entire group of people in increasingly brutal and dehumanizing fashion culminating in industrial murder', how CAN there be a 'judgement-free approach'?

weasel words.  we know what they’re up to, they know we know, and they want to pretend to be fair-minded.  I'd hazard a guess that some of these folks who are so performatively anti-crt (and it is a performance - critical race theory isn’t a thing in public schools and even in college it’s part of a fairly specialized course of study) would actually be ok if american public schools stopped teaching about genocides altogether.
