The YT algorithm chucked this into my recs, and it was absolutely right to do so. It’s so pretty 😍
Why Hawaii needs a break from tourism — perspective from local resident palanichang on tiktok
Where you can donate to help Maui, Hawaii
this article has places listed that you can donate to, but i’ll also put direct links to some of these places in this post:
my family is based in Oahu, but i consider all the islands my home even though i physically haven’t stepped foot on them before. seeing all the homes and history and memories being lost in this hurts.
if you are unable to donate, don’t feel guilty—doing things like spreading the word and making people aware of the situation helps as well. thank you for whatever you can do! mahalo
UPDATE: removed Maui Mutual Aid Fund for now because upon further research using the charity checking sites provided by this gov site, it doesn’t appear in results unlike the others listed. so i advise caution for now if you decide to donate there! they may still be legitimate, but i want to exercise caution.
Hope It’s all right to add a few more to the list.
University of Hawaii Foundation : Provides help to students, staff, and faculty the UHMC campus (especially when the Fall semester is starting in two weeks)
‘Āina Momona : (goes towards the Hawaii Community Foundation Maui County Strong Fund)
Additional Lists (there is some overlapping to those already listed): Mana Maoli Hawaii News Now
Some local Hawai’i artists are also donating 100% of their sales this week to Maui relief. (These are only the ones I know of offhand) Geoffrey Siu (creator of Gentlemons/Pokema’ams and other original art) JimmyxSparrow (Wide variety of art, does fusions of Pokemon and Hawaiian culture) Laulima (Native Hawaiian flora and fauna pins and so on)
Any help is definitely welcomed because many locals there are displaced and are now homeless. With cell service down back on Tuesday and were last told to stay in place, many had to quickly evacuate with just their clothes on their back and nothing else.
thank you so much for the additions!!! you did my work for me this evening.
here is also the twitter account of the Office of the Governor of Hawaii. there are updates and info being posted there. it’s where i found the article on checking legitimacy of fundraisers/charities.
Today marks the anniversary of Captain Cook’s death Hawai’i at the hand of my people, Kānaka Maoli.
With this act, Cook’s reign of terror was ended in the Pacific. However, the stains of his legacy remain.
Today we can laugh and joke about Cook, but also remember my people. We acted boldly and skillfully against Cook and his colonization, but in the end, my people still fell prey to White Greed.
Keep my people in your thoughts today by standing up for Native Hawaiian sovereignty, rights and educating yourself on the current issues facing my people.
We killed Cook, but we could not kill what he stood for.

not to get political but im begging you guys to stop coming to hawaii. in maui theyre asking to put a ‘pause’ on flights bc we literally do not have enough room or staff to service you. the roads are so full that its causing a major backup when ppl need to get to work.
on top of this, i heard that by September? theyre expecting to get rid of the mask rule (if 70% of ppl are vaccinated/all goes well) but ill be honest w/ you, i know many locals arent getting the vaccine and i know plenty of tourist arent gonna take the necessary precautions.
homeless hawaiians aren’t even allowed to sit or lay on sidewalks to keep up the “paradise” image for tourists
- “Hawai‘i has the highest rate of homelessness per capita among the 50 states” (another source)
- do you remember when zuckerburg bought hawaiian land in kauai? then filed lawsuits agasint families that lived their? that land BELONGS to the natives and its extremly harmful to the community.
- at this very moment, hawaii is one of the most EXPENSIVE places to live on top of not having a liveable minimum wage ($10.10) this is why many children still live w/ their parents (+ having no space) in order to SURVIVE here, youd have to work full time for at least $15.50 (more links)
- in this article it states that “The Living Wage Calculator from the MIT says that one adult in Honolulu needs to make $16.59 per hour for a living wage. If that is a couple with 2 children, each adult needs to make $17.70 per hour.”
- everything is more EXPENSIVE; food, household appliances, clothing, etc bc everything is shipped there.
- “the median price for a single family home in Hawaii was $885K. Condos are selling at a median of $454K.”
- “Average rent in Hawaii (Oahu) for a studio will vary based on location but expect to pay around $1,670 with Waikiki studios going from $1,400 to about $1,700. Average rent for one bedroom apartments in Hawaii (Honolulu, Oahu) is $1,743”
PLEASE stop vacationing in / moving to the occupied Kingdom of Hawaiʻi. You are actively participating in violent settler colonialism when you do, even if you aren’t white. Never in my whole life have I seen our airport THIS packed!!! Our islands cannot support this many people – especially during our dry season and in the middle of a PANDEMIC!
Tourism makes it impossible to keep up with the rising cost of living. It brings in revenue and with that, becomes the fake state’s priority. Tourism pushes native Hawaiians from their land and homes, puts locals at risk for covid19, directly harms the delicate environment and native species here, houseless folk (many whom are native Hawaiian) are being illegally swept to make room for tourists at beaches, and locals are being restricted and fined for using water on east Maui, all while hotels can use up all the resources no problem and our government approves a million dollar home construction for new part-time residents (when locals who have been here for generations are being thrown into poverty, barely staying afloat, losing businesses and even their homes). “Hawai’i has become the Blood Diamond of the Pacific. We are mined for our splendor, and our residents live the every day, complex consequences.”
It’s absolutely VILE what is happening here. I hope yall know that Hawaiʻi was overthrown and occupied by the US military, and isn’t even legally a state! Hawaiʻi is not your vacation spot, so you better tell your family and friends to stay at home.
It is Asian and Pacific Islander heritage month so please take a minute to read this. Samuel Kaleioka Kaeo, a Hawaiian professor has a warrant out for his arrest just for speaking Hawaiian in court. He is facing charges for protesting against the construction of a telescope on a sacred mountain in Haleakalā. Words cannot convey how disgusted I am with this trash country.
“Punishing Native Hawaiians for speaking our native language invokes a disturbing era in Hawaii’s history when olelo Hawaii was prohibited in schools, a form of cultural suppression that substantially contributed to the near extinction of the Hawaiian language,” Crabbe said. “It is disappointing that the state government continues to place barriers on olelo Hawaii, 40 years after Hawaii’s constitution was amended to recognize the Hawaiian language as an official language of the state. We demand that the state Judiciary find an immediate solution to this issue.”
Hawai’i is more than a picture perfect sunset. It’s more than a vacation spot away from work. Kanaka Maoli (Native Hawaiians) are still facing blatant racism and suppression in 2018. This is oppressive action against the protesters. This is bullshit white supremacy in action. I don’t know how to directly help, so I’m spreading the word. We must all practice Malama ‘Aina. http://m.hawaiinewsnow.com/hawaiinewsnow/db/330510/content/YTPnUXB5
