Just finished this after watching @captainmarvel and couldn’t resist seeing some fans of the pairing
This. This is what thousands or little girls get told. That they are too much, too intense. Tone it down, hide it away, don’t make others uncomfortable by being too ambitious. If you have to cut out parts of yourself to meet their expectations then you better start sharpening that knife. You’re too [smart/wild/sensitive/strong/etc] for your own good.
When I watched Captain Marvel I was struck by how intense she was. And how the people around her were telling her emotions and actions were TOO MUCH. That she needed to tone it down in order to succeed. And 8 year old me loved watching her little smirk as she did exactly what they said she shouldn’t or couldn’t do. Those moments of rebellion where what drove me to keep going as a child.
But then. When Carol stares down Yon-Rogg and says “I have nothing to prove to you”. THAT is what adult me loved. Because woman don’t have anything to prove to anyone. They aren’t too much. They don’t need to hide themselves away because they don’t need to prove their womanhood to anyone.
[Book is Higher Faster Further by Liza Palmer. Its about Carol and Maria in the air force years!]
