posts about the alt-right pipeline being compassionate towards young men while radical leftists shun and shame them are not fucking saying "the men are becoming violent because feminists are too mean!" and if that is your takeaway you need to get off tumblr until you've better honed your critical thinking skills.

those posts are talking about how effective the language and approach you take in your activism can be. this is literally cult deprogramming 101. if someone is being taken in by a violent or dangerous group, that violent or dangerous group is usually offering them compassion and solace while working hard to convince them everyone else in the world is their enemy. you are under no obligation to coddle or act compassionate toward these men and their violent ideologies, but if you have the means to try, it is something that you can do to make a tangible difference.

radicalized people are often only one loving friend or family member or external voice away from being de-radicalized. of course that is not always the case, but it very often is. a lot of y'all rightfully understand that you do not carry the burden of being that voice, but a lot of y'all also have a lot of internalized ideas about morals and punitive justice and have simply written off these people as deserving of only the worst and not worth saving.

ten years ago, my grandmother was a fox news watching republican who voted red in every election and very well could have fallen down the qanon rabbit hole if not for me and her daughter challenging her compassionately, walking her through hypotheticals that validated her feelings & proving why they were false, & being patient with her despite our extreme division in political ideology. it was frustrating fucking work! but i decided i wanted to do it, because i could see the horizon and i could see me making a difference!

"misogynists have been saying feminists are too mean for years, get new material" that is not the fucking POINT. the point is that you, feminist, can be the compassionate voice that guides your brother, your father, your cousin, your grandfather away from fucking becoming or staying a nazi. you can show them compassion and companionship. you can be the woman they think of when their alt-right bros try to convince them that women are the enemy. and you can choose to crystallize that image of yourself so wholly in their mind's eye as worth protecting that they may very well choose to reject those harmful ideas.

it's not saying you HAVE to do it! it's saying you CAN do it! don't you 'firebomb a walmart' people all love taking change into your own hands? where the fuck is that energy right now, huh?

i saw this right after and OP turned off reblogs but LITERALLY!!! LITERALLY.

i know the punitive justice obsessed "kill all abusers" ass catholics on this fucking website don't want to hear shit like this but love is literally the answer. fix your heart or die

Just finished watching the #Swoop documentary on the Kardashian/Jenner cultural appropriation and blackfishing. It is INCREDIBLE, and parts of it are absolutely harrowing.

Swoop walks through why the blackfishing and blackface of the Kardashians is so dangerous and damaging, as well as highlighting the cultural appropriation of Japanese and Indian cultures by the Kardashians as well.

There is a harrowing story about Sarah Baartman and the Slave Trade which you NEED to watch. Watch the whole video-- but definitely, you NEED to watch the part about Sarah Baartman, the Paper Magazine photoshoot with Jean-Paul Goude, and more. (47:20)

And when you're done with that, read all about Sarah Baartman and the absolutely evil treatment she received.

I am pleading once again for white liberals to read The New Jim Crow and see how racist policing and law enforcement is 1) bipartisan and 2) the key to how people of color (Black people specifically) are systemically, violently, and purposely kept in check in this country. Begging y'all to see that someone doesn't have to say a slur to be antiblack in the entirety of their belief system, that the status quo you live under is maintained by the suffering (both current and potential) of millions

Potato do not be playing with y'all lmao, get this free education!

okay I’ll say it nicer:

australia was colonised according to the myth of terra nullius (or empty land). ever since the very early days of colonialism, the land has been framed as something untameable and unliveable. this has justified acts of violence against the first peoples here, in that they are seen as non-people. it has justified the destruction of sacred land in the goal of making australia look more european. (an example: our capital city contains a man-made lake that is now nothing better than a fetid carp pond. it’s disgusting and unnatural). basically, the idea of “taming australia’ has justified endless harm

“everything in australia is weird and dangerous” is not just some silly meme phrase, it is something that arcs back to the very beginning of white settlers laying claim to ‘australia’. and personally I am very sick of seeing it thrown around like it means nothing

Can't wait for people to stop joking about how all the wildlife in australia is scary and deadly...

Avatar

Yeah and like... I think there is space to talk about the ways Australia is relatively unique or at least different to other places: our snakes and spiders are more dangerous than anyone else's, but our native bees and 'bears' are safer. You might die of sunstroke but you won't die in a blizzard, earthquake, or tornado.

Australia is not especially dangerous, or unfriendly, it's just 'different', but then the question is different to what. Why should deadly earthquakes and forests full of murderous bears be seen as more normal? Why is a desert any more weird or scary than a bog or tundra? Why are cold damp places seen as the only form of natural beauty, why do people see warm dry places as dead when they are full of life, and see warm damp places as full of TOO MUCH life somehow? Why, even in Australia, do we use the aesthetics of red October leaves and Christmas snow, and not celebrations of the beautiful seasonal changes we actually see all around us? Why are white Australians so actively hostile to engaging and connecting with the local cultures that have been celebrating and working with the place we live for thousands of years, and even after hundreds of years still see our home as Strange?

YEAH, THAT TOO. It's important to remember that the way Indigenous Australians were and are treated would be just as unjustified if they were all hunter gatherers. But they were not, and that lie has been spread for a reason.

Also I read through the replies and people point out that exactly the same sort of exotification into a Dangerous Alien Landscape Which Must Be Tamed happens with Africa, Asia, The Middle East etc. Even like... Scotland and Italy, back in the day. And for similar reasons. And this kind of imagery is everywhere, like play any video game with multiple biomes or cultures etc (real or fictional) and see which ones are treated as Normal and which ones are Weird and Scary/Exotic.

"The Australian landscape is alien and mysterious and will kill you" has been a trope since the very first white people looked at this continent, and it's tiring.

the way people view my race in america has made it so very hard to distance myself from femininity

i could do anything to my body and still be viewed as a small, cute asian girl

really fks me up that people think it's okay to tell others who obviously have a poor relationship w femininity that they look feminine and will always look cute no matter what

v not ok

if anything, this is proof that media / represent is effected by and then effects reality.

specific examples that happened to me:

  • i was preyed on by multiple kpop and anime fans to fulfill their asian fetish
  • kpop fan told me to my face all asians are either drop dead gorgeous or ugly
  • kpop fan told me multiple times on days i felt good and comfortable w presenting masculine "u look rlly feminine today"
  • kpop fan told me i could get tattoos all over my body and piercings all over my face and i would still look cute
  • i was told multiple times that it was rare for asian ppl to have lips like me or a chest like me (look like an adult???)
  • anime fan told me he could beat the shit out of me / could easily kill me and didn't understand why i was uncomfortable
  • anime fan would mansplain me constantly the entire time i knew him about literally everything (including my own culture)
  • anime fan constantly talked down on me like i was always doing something wrong and incapable of doing anything right
  • multiple ppl laughed at the idea of me thinking of myself as hot / handsome / cool instead of cute

i don't think u guys realize how demeaning this is and this has been a constant my entire life. even as an adult, ppl use words they use for children to describe me. ppl babytalk to me. this is why many asian ppl take offense to being called cute. it's infantilizing, dehumanizing, and emasculating.

ex of ppl doing this to full grown celebrities:

  • sandra oh
  • marie kondo
  • lana condor
  • literally every single kpop idol and every single actor in the untamed

i'm begging u to be mindful. i am so sick of being viewed and treated this way, esp by ppl who apparently Love asian ppl.

watch how u treat asian ppl online and irl. we're people deserving of basic respect. we're people who are varied. we're people who have boundaries.

watch how u consume and interact w asian media and asian fictional characters. it fully affects how u view asian ppl as a whole.

thinking about the fact that in order to serve on the jury of a death penalty case you have to be willing to impose the death penalty (i.e. not be categorically opposed to it on principle) otherwise you'll be dismissed, so juries in death penalty cases tend to be disproportionately white and male and have been shown to be more likely to vote for conviction. just in general death penalty as a practice is horrific and barbaric but this specific part of it also just feels so insane to me

Shout out to all the Black ppl that can no longer participate directly in the fandom they love because of the stresses of racism 👍🏾 you contain multitudes of value and I'm sorry that the color of your skin and the power of your voice makes people not want to acknowledge that.

Yes, nonblack people can reblog. I'd appreciate it, in fact, if y'all took the time to vocally support your Black friends/fans in fandom.

This racism against Haitians is really getting to me. I'm not even sure how to refer to it because I don't even want to say "eating pets thing" because they're not doing that! It's a completely made up racist hoax that the Republican candidates for president and vice-president are all in on.

There's a town in Ohio with a lot of Haitian immigrants and the right made up a completely fake, racist story about Haitian immigrants stealing and eating pets. To be clear, this did not happen. It's completely made up. A lot of people who aren't on twitter (or maybe some corners of facebook) didn't know about it because it's basically a right wing racist social media hoax, but JD Vance was all in on it tweeting about it and he's a sitting senator who's running for vice-president and then last night Trump mentioned it during the debate. It's had some more mainstream news coverage now because of that and things like the police in Ohio saying "yeah that's not happening."

even worse, it was unsurprisingly started by a literal neo-nazi:

some other debunks (per snopes)

the photo going around of a black guy carrying a goose by the neck (which like first of all hats off to anyone who can capture a canada goose by grabbing it by the neck those things are nasty) was apparently taken in columbus ohio (not springfield ohio where this whole faux controversy is supposedly set) and the guy in it likely wasn’t even haitian. the video of a woman being arrested for animal cruelty and confessing to eating a cat was not taken in springfield and the woman in the video speaks with an american accent and is clearly not haitian.

the recent wave of haitian immigrants moving to springfield hasn’t resulted in any kind of crime spike. the “white boy murdered by a haitian immigrant on the way to school” story was a tragic case of vehicular manslaughter, and the boy’s parents disavowed anyone using his story as anti-immigrant propaganda.

while there has been a recent uptick in haitian immigration to the united states (and to be clear we should welcome them. the situation in haiti is dreadful) most haitian immigrants living in the united states have been here for 10+ years because they were given temporary protected status after the 2010 earthquake and then virtually nothing else was done for them (they should be offered a path to citizenship imo) many of them who originally settled in coastal cities are now moving to midwestern towns (such as springfield ohio) because that’s where the factory and warehouse jobs are and the cost of living is more affordable.

I just want to add that “stealing and eating your pets” is something opponents of integration used to claim in the 50s about their black neighbors

It’s the same old racism

It's been used against Asian immigrants too. A real classic old racist chestnut.

I've also heard it used against Native Americans/First Nations people.

our humanity as Australian Aboriginal people has been questioned vigorously ever since whitefella came to our fucking lands and i'm going to be honest i don't give a fucking shit if your questions about Aboriginal people are purely from a scientific evolutionary standpoint: asking how or why Aboriginal people are considered to be Homo sapiens is the most racist dogshit way you could ever fucking ask your stupid question. As if us Aboriginal people don't have to deal with racist cunts saying that we're extinct or that we're not as evolved as everyone else because we never "progressed" past a certain point or some shit (as if "progression" was some how necessary for us to support our communities and live our lives the way we wanted to). it is the most tone-deaf racist fucking dumb shit i have ever heard. i am now demanding that non-Aboriginal people actually read the many many pdfs and articles that are out there, made by Aboriginal people and by different Australian government bodies about how to work with or communicate with Aboriginal people and what is/is not allowed to be asked and other BASIC FUCKING INFORMATION ABOUT ABORIGINAL PEOPLE because you whitefella are acting so out of fucking pocket that i truly believe that you need to read this shit so you actually start acting respectful when it comes to Aboriginal issues and you know HOW to actually talk about these issues without talking over us or being a shitcunt about it. and yeah one of the PDF's is 51 pages long. suck it up and read the whole thing and don't complain about it to me.

also if you're already an ally to Aboriginal people, I'm still asking you to read the pdf's and articles and stuff. because you never know if there may be info in there that simply did not occur to you as someone who isn't Aboriginal. you never know, you may learn something new.

fake geek girl accusations have always been stupid and misogynistic and racist but the absurdity is really Highlighted when it's megan. megan thee stallion. lying about liking anime for men's approval. to impress whom, jeffrey? tyler, is megan thee stallion so worried about attracting you that she's faking her interests in her own songs? her own chart-topping songs? hunter, are you feeling ok? preston? zachary, do you need a cold wash cloth? how many fingers am i holding up austin

While all of this is true, I also think it's worth highlighting the not-insignificant amount of racism in the hateful comments. Their issue isn't just that a popular or pretty girl likes anime, it's that a black woman (especially an attractive one) can't possibly be into anime. It just doesn't compute, no matter how many black people, celebs or not, show up to cons or cosplay or even just talk about it. I also feel that a lot of the gatekeeping and dismissing her faves as mainstream falls into this category. They keep trying to push her back into the out-group, because from their perspective she can't possibly be a real fan.

i think it's important not to act like the harassment imane khelif experienced is merely misdirected transmisogyny. it really can't be separated from the racism at play. transphobia was the cudgel she was beaten with for the crime of being visibly non white

racism wasn't just an incidental part of it. the reason it happened is because a white woman cried after being bested by a woman of color. imane khelif's racialized status is what made her so vulnerable to those attacks. the fact that she had the out of being cis did not save her from being dragged through the mud on international news

don't get it twisted, it's white supremacist patriarchy all the way down. it just happens that veiling your racism behind transphobic concern trolling over women's safety makes it go down easier in the mainstream right now, but it's the same shit ultimately. if you're a trans woman, if you're a woman of color, and god forbid if you're both (hi) you are a threat to patriarchal standards of womanhood, and you will be subject to the violence of the system trying to enforce itself

ngl it bothers me to see some people on here act like this was some silly mistake a bunch of transphobes made that imane khelif can just shrug off bc she's cis. this was a targeted racist harassment campaign cloaking itself in the language of a hot button culture war talking point. she was a global laughing stock for days. she almost had her career and life ruined, and just because the media narrative is starting to turn around now doesn't mean this isn't going to continue to affect her for years to come

"weird" really is the perfect descriptor for modern conservatives because I would argue the defining feature of the current american far right is that they exist purely in their own bespoke media ecosystem that is both highly conspiratorial and mostly untethered from the truth. this is a group of people whose belief system has been debunked and disproven so many times by legitimate sources that they've resorted to just telling each other increasingly absurd lies in order to justify those beliefs. the upshot of this being that the minute you remove any of those lies from said bespoke media environment, there's really no appropriate response other than some varient of "bro, what the fuck are you talking about?"

how am I supposed to respond to someone who says that Democrats are running a satanic cult where they ritually sacrifice children to harvest their adrenachome - a theory that is not only insane, but is also a throwaway gag from Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. what do you expect me to say to someone who says that trans women are dominating in women's sports, and when asked to give examples responds with a list of non-white cis women? How am I supposed to take someone seriously who thinks that wildfires are caused by space lasers controlled by the Rothschilds or that schools are installing litter boxes for children who identify as cats or that most large corporations are "Marxist" because they have mandatory diversity trainings?

like sure I can take them seriously as a political threat but how am I supposed to have any respect for them as *people*. because as people they are just deeply fucking weird. we should be able to dismiss them out of hand because it's not like they'd care about whether or not we're making a reasoned argument

Just watched this three year old video recently and while some stuff isn't current (is Q even a thing still?), it's still pretty relevant to this post:

My mom decided to weigh in on this, on the side of the Italian boxer, thinking I'd allow her to repeat bullshit talking points for some reason (never have allowed that shit, especially not from someone who raised me not to tolerate racism or anything that ends with someone being put down)...I made her stay on the line until she admitted she was wrong.

I want to clarify, Angela Carini did not quit because she thought her opponent was trans, nor was she "forced" to quit. She quit because the first punch made her nose bleed and she couldn't breathe. She quit due to fear for bodily safety. She did cry and refuse to shake her opponents hand, but it had nothing to do with her gender, she was just upset she was injured and couldn't continue. She later admitted that she had shown poor sportsmanship in refusing to shake her opponents hand, and apologized to her and to everyone, and clarified it had nothing to do with gender, and if the Olympics said she can compete she can compete. Angela Carini is being used by terfs as a scapegoat and is not at fault for anything more than poor sportsmanship.

Dead on. Thanks for adding this. Here's a thread from Threads with more background on Carini.

Transphobia are falling for a false narrative about Khelif, and tumblrites are falling for a false narrative about Carini. Carini was not wrong to cry, and to claim she's "weaponising white woman tears" or that she's responsible for the hate Khelif faced is to blame a woman for the actions of people twisting her story in a way that she's repeatedly disavowed. These women are not against each other, and the problem here isn't which one is right. Neither of them did anything wrong (except Carini was a little rude after getting injured in front of the entire world)

From this article-

"All this controversy makes me sad," Carini told Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport.

"I'm sorry for my opponent, too. If the IOC said she can fight, I respect that decision."

Carini, also 25, said abandoning the fight had been a mature step to take, but she expressed regret at not shaking hands with Khelif afterwards.

"It wasn't something I intended to do," Carini said. "Actually, I want to apologise to her and everyone else. I was angry because my Olympics had gone up in smoke."

She added that if she met Khelif again, she would "embrace her".

(it is absolutely horrible the way people have used ONE woman's pretty understandable response to attack ANOTHER woman, which is just a big mess of those people being all kinds of racist and transphobic. neither Imane Khelif nor Angela Carini did anything wrong)

maybe i'm stepping out of line here but a cis algerian woman being called a "biological male" to slander her in post is just as much racism as it is transmisogyny. a lot of transmisogynistic rhetoric is in fact, misogynoir in a new shirt is it true that it invokes the specter of a grotesque mockery of "real womanhood" by being too masculine? yes. except "real womanhood" here means whiteness. women of color are always by default degendered in a similar way that transfeminine people are. it's not transmisogyny hitting the wrong target, it's the same racism we've always faced the whole time. we are denied the status of "woman" when it would benefit us because we are physically deemed unfit for it by RACE. it does not fundamentally matter if she really does have an abnormal karyotype or not because a white intersex woman would not have been discussed this way (i'm saying this as an intersex POC)
