The Supreme Court in Sweden has rejected Wikileaks founder Julian Assange's request to cancel a warrant for his arrest following complaints of sexual misconduct against him in 2010.
Assange, who has been hiding in the Ecuadorian Embassy in London to avoid extradition to Sweden, was accused in 2010 by two Swedish women of committing rape and assault. The Australian was granted asylum inside the embassy in 2012 to avoid being sent to Stockholm for questioning.
The WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has agreed has to be questioned at Ecuador's London embassy over allegations of sexual assault, his Swedish lawyer told Reuters.
"Now we await further word [from prosecutors]," Thomas Olsson, Assange's lawyer, told the agency adding that he expected prosecutors to get in touch to sort out the details.
"Our cables reveal that Israel supported Hamas in its infancy, that Hamas was used as an instrument to divide the Palestine Liberation Organization [PLO] and the Palestinian resistance," Assange told Argentinian newspaper Página/12.
On the topic of the Islamic state, he said “The IS is a direct result of the adventurism of the West.”
Although it is difficult to imagine what he may be going through, the WikiLeaks founder has had a long line of celebrity visitors – pop stars, politicians and others. He’s also been keeping busy giving interviews, writing and keeping up an active online presence – even hosting a show on RT, where he spoke to numerous controversial figures, including human rights advocates and others like him who have faced smear campaigns and staunch criticism for their work.
Fans and supporters from across the world have been sending donations, which was a great help. The one positive thing about being cooped up in the embassy is to not have to pay London rent, which soars above almost every other European capital.
WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange is appealing to the Swedish Supreme Court, the highest in the country’s judicial system, to try and persuade a judge the arrest warrant against him over alleged sexual offenses should be dropped.
Assange’s lawyers will reportedly appeal to the court Wednesday, arguing the “severe limitations” on the fugitive’s personal freedoms are disproportionate to the case levied against him.
