Rare Earth

Mostly my own rock collection, plus geology, archaeology, nature, and probably your rockhounding photos, brought to you by @selfishsteam. The 10p coin I use for size reference is the size of an American quarter.

“Bloody heavy…not sure but is the first one a petrified wood or something?”

Wow, @farkingoath you have some really excellent material! May I ask the general location where you found it?

The first one is certainly petrified wood or possibly lambast, with that nice woody texture on the outside and then the rest replaces with what looks like super nice opal and/or agate. Rad piece!

The second one is blowing my mind, I’ve never seen formations like that on any rock or mineral. I’d have to guess it’s a fossil, but wood or animal I have no idea! It’s amazing! I suppose it could be the outside of a thunderegg or bizarre botryoidal growth. I’d love to see more photos.

Can anyone help them out with identification? This stuff is just what I’m all about!

Hey guys! This rock was found at Conwy beach in North Wales. I’ve been trying to identify it for a while but I really don’t know what it is so I was wondering if any of you have some ideas? @rrareearthh @thepurplegeologist @a-simple-geologist @magickllama @geologycat

I’m touched that you’d think I might have any insight into this! I unfortunately don’t know much about identification or geology in general, I just love it. I’d say a type of limestone, but I bet @hamiltonlaura or @dream-small-do-big could do better.

Unknown rocks from Short Beach, Oregon, 2015

I broke one open on site and the took another I suspect is the same. They are very hard and quite heavy, with the rusty looking outside as you can see here. Feels like flint, but it’s more opaque than that. Anyone know what it might be?

I still don’t know what these are! They aren’t magnetic. Can you hazard a guess?
