On their first Halloween in the other universe, Rose and the Doctor carve jack-o’-lanterns. 

She gets right to work, using a small knife to cut a menacing, lop-sided grin into her pumpkin, and is done in ten minutes. She holds it up to show the Doctor but he’s intent on his work, tongue pressed to the roof of his mouth as he makes precise slices to the orange flesh.

When he’s finally finished he grins, holding the pumpkin in his hands and turning it around. Rose expects to see a ghoulish and historically accurate portrait of Jack the Ripper or some other such villain, but instead the sight of his carvings makes her eyes sting. 

It’s a beautiful design, delicate overlapping circles and lines and dots, spiraling across one whole side. He smiles at her and she knows exactly what it says — it’s the words he doodles in her notebook during Torchwood briefings, it’s the words he traces on her skin as she falls asleep. 

"You’re supposed to carve something scary," she says, wrapping her arms around his shoulders and nuzzling his neck.

"That is scary, to me. It’s the scariest thing I could think of." She frowns up at him but it’s not long before his lips are on hers, kissing away any doubt. "I want to be scared with you forever."
