I think about this old tweet...a LOT
Language is a living thing that constantly evolves!!! There is nothing we can do to stop that. It’s out of our control, no matter how much we police each other. “Words mean things!” Sure, we give them meaning. Meaning isn’t the same to everyone. Us having different perspectives on the definitions of certain words (especially gender / sexuality labels that are extremely personal and complex!) doesn’t devalue the meaning any of us consider significant, and it doesn’t harm one another up until the moment we create spaces that depend on rigid definition and we are in the position of being able to exclude well meaning people bc they don’t define a highly personal, complex label / identity the same way. I think more people need to sit with the uncomfortable feelings they feel when someone doesn’t define something the same way, or uses a label or identifies in a way that makes us feel uncomfortable or we feel like they don’t “deserve”. Language is a living thing. Being an alive human being is an infinitely complex thing. Words are powerful, and can be used for great harm. It’s really important to learn to recognize when something is just really uncomfortable or genuinely coming from a place of intent to harm.
#yeah more and more I have been leaning into not labeling my gender and sexuality cause like. idk it is what it is!#I’m a lesbian cause that’s the closest word I feel I have to describe it but it’s not like. a rule ya know.#like I’ve had friends be SO surprised simply because I expressed attraction to someone with a dick and I’m like#can we just. let it be. it doesn’t matter actually.
