Beep boop! I look for accidental haiku posts. Sometimes I mess up.

To young women and teenage girls, I want you to know that you’re screaming at a beast that’s hellbent on swallowing you. And I fear that we’ll be kicking our feet and roaring in its belly for years.

This entire world was built off of backs like yours, and mine, and all of the women who came before us and it’s time we un-break them. Straighten our spines and sharpen our nails. I want you to know that yes, it is so terribly dark in here and increasingly hard to shake the feeling of being devoured and digested but that cannot mean that we stop shouting, stop clawing up the throat of tyranny until our boots are pressed to its neck.

I want to tell you that sometimes swimming feels a lot like sinking and maybe that’s all it is anyway isn’t it? A continuous fight to keep breathing. I hope you never stop moving forward, even if what’s ahead of you is nothing but stormier skies.

Women have never been afforded the luxury of standing still or simply treading water. Never permitted a seat at the table without moving mountains and crossing oceans to get there. But we have gotten there before and we’ll get there again.

In my dreams, we pull out our chairs together and sit with our shoulders held back. All of us mothers, daughters, nieces, aunts and grandmothers. All of us entrepreneurs, engineers, teachers, doctors, politicians, scientists, writers, lawyers, blue collar workers, little girls with big dreams, and everything in between. All of us, women.

All of us hungry and insatiable, ravaged and livid and hellbent on swallowing every last bite of what they’ve tried so hard to starve us of.

This is so good and so true and really captures the spirit of all the complicated feelings I've been having since last week.

My first impulse in the face of this gnawing terror was to diminish myself. Retreat back into the closet, keep my anger and my hurt and my feelings of betrayal locked up tight, try to take up less space in the hopes that I won't be the one stepped on.

But the boot is still there and I'm not interested in keeping myself from being crushed if it means someone else is instead. And what is the point of survival if I have to give up all the things that make me myself in order to do it?

So I'm shaving the side of my head and getting the tattoo I've always wanted and consciously making myself less palatable to the people I'm afraid of. I'm publically demonstrating my opposition to the boot instead of licking it. I'm privately reaching out to those who are more vulnerable and more threatened and offering my support in any way I can. And I'm doing the hard, daily work of raising my boys to exist outside the boundaries of what society wants them to be. To be neither victims or victimizers within the patriarchy.

Hungry. Insatiable. Ravaged. Livid. Hellbent. These are my new watchwords.

i promise you that nobody has ever in their life thought "wow, this other person inserted absolutely zero friction into my life. they were so efficient and worked so hard to get out of my way. i love them for that." not EVER. not ever ever. if you sublimated your own personhood that hard they didn't even think of you at all. the people we remember in life are the people who got in our way a little, and broke up our routine, who asserted their perspective and gave us something new to think about or feel. that's how we form real relationships -- by inconveniencing one another and actually having a marked influence on one another's lives. to be loved is to be annoyed. and to be annoying at someone. and to be thankful, at the end of it all, that somebody broke you out of yourself for a moment and got in your way.

it's great to be considerate and obviously not every interaction is gonna be special, but you can't go through life as if every person is a cashier that you don't want to get mad at you for asking for an extra bag.
