people are wrong about chosen family. chosen family can become just as involuntary and inescapable as regular family if you use your fucking imagination

inspired by the previous anon what adjectives would you use to describe emma and scotts personalities?
Sorry for the delay in answering this, I just thought way too hard about it. 😄 Thanks for the question!
Emma
- cunning/manipulative
- self-reliant/uncooperative
- poised/rude
- protective/pessimistic
I’ve given her traits in pairs, one more positive and one more negative, because I think they really are linked. She’s cunning and incredibly good at getting what she wants, but that often involves her being manipulative. She’s totally self-reliant and going to do what she thinks is best even if others disagree, but this can make her hard to work with. She’s unflappable and always poised, but the way she maintains the appearance of being in control is through cutting remarks, and she doesn’t remember to turn that off when she’s in situations where it might be okay to not be in control all the time. And she’s deeply protective of what she cares about, but for her that means she’s constantly trying to protect against the worst-case scenario.
Scott
- tactical
- honorable
- anxious
- tenacious
- uncool in a deeply charming way
I think a lot of Scott’s characterization can be explained by the tension between honorable and tactical. He needs to be an honorable person but he also needs to do what is strategically necessary. Both of these, for me, are driven by his anxiety. His anxiety says he needs to live up to his code, but his anxiety also says that he needs to protect his team and all mutants and make the best strategic decision. He’s also incredibly tenacious, he does not let things go, and that can be a good or a bad thing. Finally, he’s an awkward dork but in the most delightful and loveable way.
Was thinking a lot about “honorable” and how to square that with Scott’s questionable behavior in relationships (especially thinking about like the love triangle with Maddy and him and the X-Men) and honestly I think the thing is that he built his honor code around being a hero. His understanding of being a good man does not include how to be a good partner or family man, partly because he doesn’t have any models for it but also because he just never thought to include it when he was, as a teenager, meticulously crafting the impossible standards to which he would hold himself.
Reblog for sample size etc etc would love to see how this looks outside my immediate circle
Look. I get it. MOST of the time inkers are not part of the conversation. But if you post a piece that is clearly and obviously signed by both Terry and Rachel Dodson and attribute it only to Terry Dodson, I am breaking into your house and stealing all your comics.

reading over my old batman fics i never finished and 1) damn i really cared about these guys' familial relationships and 2) these fics would be soooo good if any of them were longer than 400 words
actually earth 11 is interesting to me because it’s not a straight genderbend, you’ve got several different types of things going on
- straight genderbends - like klarienne the witch-girl, who is a genderbent version of klarion. except also she’s nice now.
- other existing characters - flash isn’t a genderbent barry allen, she’s jesse quick, a character who exists in other universes. similarly, batwoman is kathy kane rather than like brianna wayne.
- role swap - hal jordan and carol ferris get to keep their names and their appearances, but things are somewhat switched around. carol fights to protect the universe (as a member of the star sapphires), while hal is the owner of an aircraft company and a sometimes villain (as a member of the green lanterns).
they’ve also genderbent some historical figures. and earth 11 is clearly influenced by young justice (the tv show) as well as teen titans comics, so it’s an interesting combination of a whole bunch of different things.
its always a lil funny when i open the timkon tag on ao3 and its just
