Outkast singing “If what they say is nothing lasts forever then what makes love the exception” in Hey Ya was too deep when it was released in 2003 and it’s still too deep today
the entire song is about dealing with fear and doubt, both self doubt and doubt of your partner, in a relationship like if you’re just staying with someone out of the fear of being alone (or vice versa) and the fact that many people make different excuses for themselves as to why they should want to be with someone, instead of just facing the truth of their feelings.
and the crazy thing is Andre 3000 really freaking played us all
after the line OP mentioned he goes “so why oh why oh why oh why oh why oh are we so in denial when we know we’re not happy here……….” then it immediately goes back into the HEYYYY YAAAA (which is usually what we all jump and sing to) BUT ACTUALLY in the background of this HEY YAAAA he says the greatest line ever that encompasses society’s consumption of pop music: “y’all don’t want to hear me, you just want to dance” - a line that i swear most people don’t even know exists in the song, i didn’t even realise til i searched up the lyrics just a year or so ago.
and it’s true.. everyone keeps thinking this is a fun dance song, blasting it while being unaware of it’s true nature - when it’s actually a really depressing, deep self and societal evaluation of love.
