What do you mean "old"?? I'm still running the damn thing! I have a book that I update EVERY SINGLE WEEK

Wattpad is kind of fun, okay? I don't know any people in real life so I've come to rely on strangers from the interwebs for validation and feedback. Let an old broad do her thing.

Question for fiction authors! When you create your characters, do you have specific actors/models in mind for them? Do you have a face that you made up? Do you design faces with combinations of different features that you like? Do you write a whole book without having a clear image of their faces in your mind?

I am not ashamed to admit that the inspiration for Ardus, the eight-and-a-half-foot-tall Dreen biologist in STARFISH who simps HARD for Dr Nina Ma'atanoa, came from Benedict Cumberbatch. I wanted someone who could be both academic and romantic, stoic and a little shy. Also, that voice 🥰 I thought that someone of Ardus's size should have a deep, resonant voice AND I just think he's a gorgeous man with interesting features and great skill in acting.

Valen, the Drassian Prince from The Dragon Prince's Consort, is modeled on Adam Driver. I just really like the look of him, and I very much enjoyed his performance in The Last Duel as both a fierce fighter and an intelligent, courtly personage. I didn't like what his character did, obviously, but the way he carried himself while dressed in both armor and silk made an impression. He has that "big man in a small room" presence that is extremely important for a princely character, but also a sad, lonely kind of seriousness that fits what Valen has come to be like after all these years.

I could be projecting, of course, but when I see a face it just hits me like "that's XYZ! That's the look I'm going for!" and then I rush to Pinterest and start hunting for more visual references.

STARFISH chapter 8 excerpt

Wherein Nina has an uncomfortable epiphany about her alien boss...

Nina smiled, and unless she was mistaken the spark in his eyes brightened. You know, maybe I do like this. “Yeah, well, I have an apology to make as well.”

Both of his eyebrows raised. “What for?”

She gave him a wry look. “I fell over again.”

Doctor Ardus did something then that both startled her and stirred something unexpected and strange – he laughed. It seemed to surprise him as much as it did Nina, the quick smirk that flashed across his dark face before his lips pulled back and he loosed a deep, resonant chuckle that Nina felt in her chest. Oh! At first he dipped his chin towards his chest as though he was trying to hide the smile that was slowly spreading across his face. When he looked back up, Nina felt her stomach drop into a free-fall. Oh...oh no... From his blue eyes to the handsome grin that wrinkled the flat bridge of his nose and softened the severe set of his jaw the stoic, quiet, cold Doctor Ardus transformed in an instant. Nina felt her reaction like a punch in the stomach – her chest clamped down on her lungs, her stomach knotted, and her skin pinked and heated. No, no, no!

Doctor Ardus shook his head, still chuckling slightly. “Doctor, what am I going to do with you?” He smiled again, and Nina felt the strength leave her body in a warm rush, replaced by light-headed euphoria. Her brain felt thick and stupid. Bad! This is bad! This is so bad! She gripped the infirmary bench cover with white knuckles, her head pounding. Why him? Nina realized she was clenching her teeth so hard she could hear them grinding. Why not literally anyone else? He was saying something, and Nina bit the inside of her lip to try to distract herself from the tightness in her lungs. “I'm sorry, what?”

Only a flicker in his eyes told her he noticed her lapse. “I was saying, I hope you can bring this good humor with you when we start our first project.”

“Oh? What will we be doing?”

“Nothing extraordinary, just a visit to a spot I have been watching for some time. It is a key migration stop for several air- and sea-dwelling species, and there is a specific strain of kelp Meem's worms would like. Some camera traps that need their memory cards replaced, and a coral reef that has been a source of interest for several years. Routine data collection and sampling, mostly.”

Nina forced her hands to relax, but when she said “It sounds wonderful,” she spoke through clenched teeth. When he talked about work some of the starchy academia returned and his face lost that relaxed quality and brought back a slight lowering of the brows which squeezed his eyes half shut. It was the closed, austere face she remembered, but a ghost of the warmth that had struck her off-balance hid in the set of his chin, the upward tilt of an eyebrow. The forearms folded over his chest were thicker around than her own calves. Stop it. Stop staring at his arms. His upper arms, usually shapeless in the roomy cut of a dark-colored tunic, were the size of her thighs. I can't, they're so big! Oh Omi, why are they so big?

Doctor Ardus went on, apparently oblivious to her crisis. “Athe mentioned you said you have not had much of a chance to explore. That is also my fault.” He unfolded an arm and scratched at his chin, and Nina stared as the hand tucked itself back between his arm and his chest. His thumb stayed out, its black claw shining like a chip of polished, glassy obsidian.

“H-how so?” Nina suspected she was keeping him talking not to distract him from her distress, but to keep hearing his voice. He rumbled like pounding surf, and Nina listened with growing, troubling relish.

“I have fallen into a habit of near-constant work over the years – you could call it an occupational hazard. I aim to correct that. Therefore, you should expect more outings in the future.”

That brought her around. “I...I'll get to work for you in the field?”

With me,” he corrected. “As such, whatever data we recover will have your name attached to it as well as mine. Consider it a gesture of goodwill, one that hopefully our respective people can share.”

This is my original work, I own the rights to it. Try me.

You rang?

Okay so I've actually been wanting to do something like this but I didn't know how to start. So thank you, @pen-of-roses for bringing this up.

Over on Wattpad I've been posting chapters of my first novel Starfish, an original work of sci-fi romance that I started working on pre-pandemic and finished last year. Wattpad is where I've been getting feedback and such from readers who aren't related to me so I'm hoping the anonymity means they're being honest. Anyway, I hope Op doesn't mind if I get super carried away.

First, we have Doctor Nina Ma'atanoa - she's been chosen to participate in a kind of research-based exchange program on a planet Earth made contact with when she was a child. Her whole life has been geared towards getting to Dreenai, so she's been studying the main dialect as well as getting her doctorate in biology so she can study the wildlife there. Besides being smart (and knowing it), she's a firecracker who has not, does not, and will not let anything get in her way of her goals, so she's the perfect female protagonist for a sci-fi romance. From her last name you'll probably guess she's either Samoan or Hawaiian, and it's confirmed in the story that she grew up on Hawaii and she is from an indigenous Hawaiian family. There are references to Hawaiian culture throughout the book, from stories she heard as a child to bits of language and her personal style, though since the story isn't about what it means to be Hawaiian I didn't go too heavy-handed with it.

Early on I wrestled with the idea of writing Nina as a person of color of Hawaiian ancestry. I didn't want to write about another white person's sexy adventures in space because I've read that book a million times, and if I had to read one more I was gonna barf. So I thought for a while about the areas that would be most affected by climate change, and how that usually ties in with how climate change disproportionately affects minority groups. Being a white person who is absolutely SICK of seeing my face on everything from toilet paper and tampon commercials to billboards for the latest cryptocurrency-themed cheeseburger joint, I did NOT want to contribute to an already gigantic pool of fiction there every other female protagonist looks exactly like me, and every third one looks like me but with dark hair. I just can't do it, I'm not my type and it's a lot more interesting to dig into a different culture and learn about it and let it seep into the characters as I go. If I'm not having a good time writing, you're not going to have a good time reading, so why put us through that?

My other OC is Doctor Ardus, a native Dreen who has come up with this idea of bringing human scientists to Dreenai in an effort to build some bridges between the two species. He's made a name for himself among his people by challenging tradition and producing exceptional work, specifically in ecology and conservation efforts. He hand-picked Nina out of hundreds of applicants because they share many of the same ideals when it comes to the natural world. Upon finally meeting Nina in person, however, something shifts and he can't make heads or tails of what's come over him of a sudden (though anyone with at least one eye and half a braincell can guess). I went into detail about what Dreen look like here.

I pulled a LOT of inspiration for Ardus from my own partner, who is also tall, dark and grumpy. Ardus a realist with a romantic streak that he tries to hide but fails - the epitome of an Aquarius, the sexy nerd with a dry sense of humor and a creative mind that doesn't stop. His inspiration for the research exchange project comes from his desire to learn by doing, and he's not afraid to get his hands on the wildlife, even the dangerous ones, if it means finding a deeper understanding. His romanticism for nature bleeds into his academic work in the form of passionately-detailed descriptions of the world of Dreenai, which is why Nina was drawn to it in the first place. As it turns out, that big brain can get REALLY creative in other ways as well...

I had a lot of fun writing these two, pitting Mr Stoic McGrimface against a literal Ray of Hawaiian Sunshine and having them interact in sweet, silly, smart and sexy ways. I got to explore some writing I hadn't tried before, though I read several sci-fi-romance novels to get a feel for the genre and tropes. If you have recommendations, DO tell!

I did my best with researching the biological side of the story, from bioluminescence to algae blooms to cytotoxin, and I hope that if I got anything really wrong someone with actual knowledge of these things will reach out to me. And the same goes for Nina's traits and culture - I did what I could with the information I could find, but if you're someone or know someone who is actually Hawaiian, do feel free to reach out and say something - I'll work with you to find a fix that doesn't involve appropriation but keeps the representation. What I WON'T do is entertain complaining that implies that indigenous people/POC don't exist in fiction and aren't worthy of being featured in sci-fi or romance. They do, get over it.

If you got this far, thank you! I post new chapters of Starfish every single Thursday on Wattpad and updates, quotes and pictures of my cat on Instagram most days. I'm slowly learning how to use social media as an author and I'm not really used to thinking of myself as a public figure, plus I still work full time and have to get writing time in between all that so I hope you'll be patient with me as I figure this out.

About the Dreen

Since I started posting chapters of STARFISH on Wattpad there have been some questions/remarks about the size of the Dreen, my fictional alien species. Well, here's a simple and handy size comparison I worked up over on https://www.mrinitialman.com/OddsEnds/Sizes/sizes.html (now with room for up to 6 figures!)

Yes, Dreen are BIG. When I started thinking about STARFISH back before the plague, I wanted a species that made sense in the world I was creating, and since I was working with a largely aquatic species I decided that since a lot of ocean life is a bit bigger than a human (dolphins, whales, seals, sharks) Dreen should be too. And Ardus is actually a little bigger than your average 8-foot Dreen. At 8'6", he's basically the Michael Jordan of Dreen. Nina is 5'8", so she's actually taller than the average American woman. Compared to Ardus, though, she's a shrimp. Which makes for some REALLY fun shenanigans throughout the book.

Next up, we have some physical features that, aside from size, set Dreen apart from humans (I can't draw to save my life so we'll settle for pictures):

Dreen have tough, waterproof skin. Without subcutaneous fat, they need thick skin to keep warm/cool and despite the thickness it's surprisingly soft. It's smooth and feels a little bit like suede. Side note: Dreen are warm-blooded so they're SUPER great to hug :)

Hair was a HUGE issue for me. Again, I wanted something that would make sense for a species that spends roughly half of its time in water. Inspiration came from back when I had waist-length hair that would mat horribly if I didn't braid it when I went swimming, so my first thought was dreadlocks. I liked the look, especially when it came to wearing lots of beads and wraps, but the real clincher was when I was doing research on how some species of fish feel around in dark water and voila, barbels. So I went from "I really don't want bald aliens" to "Aha! An extra sensory feature with a practical as well as decorative use!"

Naturally, an aquatic species would have some kind of webbing between their fingers and toes. I didn't want to go the mermaid route because I feel like that's been done before. Also claws, because grip. And also because there's just something cool about claws.

Whereas a human's eyes are white around the iris, the sclera of a Dreen's eye is dark, almost black. The reason for this is the melanin content of their skin - Dreen run the gamut of red, brown, yellow, green, blue and black just as humans can be anywhere from super dark (melanistic) to almost white (albinistic).

Ears gave me a lot of trouble at first - I had to think about how much time they would spend in and out of the water and work with that. Eventually I decided to go ahead and to the "mermaid ear" thing with the frills because honestly, I liked the idea of wearing lots of shiny things and I couldn't do that without ears. Aesthetics won.

Since Dreen breathe air and have lungs, they need a way to keep water OUT of their lungs. Hence the type of nose that can open and close on command. Think about how cute that is for a second.

On top of being LOTS of different colors, Dreen have patterns of bioluminescence on their bodies that they have limited conscious control of. Capable of producing any color from red to purple, Dreen colors tend to correspond with their feelings. However, if a Dreen is subjected to extreme trauma or stress, they can "go dark" and lose their ability to produce light. I discuss this somewhat in STARFISH and it's a pretty important plot point.

Probably the scariest part of a Dreen besides the size and claws are the teeth - they are predators, after all. And just like the rest of a Dreen, their teeth are quite large. In the book I specify that the largest teeth are called dirks and they're about as scary as they sound. By the way, leopard seals scare the HELL out of me - they're big, they're fast, and they're mean.

Now let's be real - if you've made it this far and you're following me on all the things including Wattpad and Instagram you're probably thinking "Okay so we have all this cool biology and aesthetics, we have an idea of what these guys look like, they're DEFINITELY aliens, so where does the romance figure in? What would convince a human to go after an 8-foot-tall, clawed, fanged, dreaded, seal-alien?"

Well...

Yeah, they're ALL like that.

Chapter 2 Excerpt

A gigantic blue-black hand emerged and flattened itself on the smooth surface, translucent webbing spreading out over the glass between long fingers up to the first knuckle. Nina screamed and clutched at the arms of her chair, drawing her feet up from the footrest. “Jesus fucking Christ!”

Doctor Ardus unfurled from the space between his desk and the antique map of Dreenai. “If it is no great inconvenience, please refrain from shouting in my office. I assure you I recognize cursing when I hear it regardless of the language.” Pulling up to his full incredible height, his black clothing and dark skin ate light like a deep-sea abyss or the dark, silent, starless reaches of space. He frowned at her, his large eyes narrow.

Basic Information

Since Instagram is predominantly a visual medium and Wattpad is more geared towards storytelling, this might be the place to write down a few things I know I would like to know about a new author.

Where am I? At the moment, I'm based in the United States. And we're going to leave it at that for the time being.

What qualifies me as a writer? As you might expect I do have a Bachelor's degree in English, but instead of going the usual creative writing route I chose to pursue writing in the more professional sense. I took technical writing classes and classes on research writing, rhetoric, literature and composition. While those don't sound like fun, I'm that weird type who actually loves research writing and taking speeches and novels apart and looking at what makes them work or not.

Why a writer? A long time before I had to analyze the themes of Moby Dick and learn how to write grant proposals, I learned how to read somewhat early and went from picture books in preschool to Michael Crichton in the second grade. Then I got into science fiction and fantasy and inhaled books like a black hole. I'll be honest and say that adolescence didn't agree with me, so writing became more than cheap entertainment - it became my lifeline.

How did that turn out? Decades later and after a lot of self-improvement I'm significantly more stable, and while writing is still a priority I can now approach it with less "frenzied need to escape from real life" and more "creative outlet that I can use to address and organize my thoughts and feelings on a subject". Some of that is due to the academic training, and more to generally maturing as a person.

What now? I've been thinking about publishing for a while, probably since I was in my early twenties. I've written a handful of things, mostly fiction, but they weren't what I would consider very good work or even terribly original. But those manuscripts proved to me that I could write complete stories, so with that question out of the way I can get on with really figuring out what I want to write. I consider those early works to be my training wheels - but because they were written before my brain was fully developed, they'll never see the light of day.

If you've made it this far, thank you. If you're interested in seeing what I'm working on, consider following me on Wattpad at https://www.wattpad.com/user/RMHash

Chapter One Excerpt - STARFISH by RM Hash

"Nina stepped backward and fumbled her bag as it slipped off of her shoulder, jerking her to the side as it caught in her elbow. She felt her heel catch, her balance left her and she knew she was going down - until a massive, leathery hand caught her upper arm. She hung there and looked up, staring in surprise up at the huge blue – impossibly so – eyes looking back down at her."

Is this a meet-cute? Because it sounds like a meet-cute. It's also an excerpt from my novel STARFISH that I'm currently posting on Wattpad. Come check it out and find out who - or what - has caught Nina's attention: https://www.wattpad.com/user/RMHash
