Hi, I’m Riv. I draw. Sometimes I do it for money when time permits. I try to keep this place art focused, so you’re gonna be seeing mostly my art posts or art reblogs. I have a sideblog, @dai-henshin, for everything non-art related.

I’ve gone through quite a bit of effort to make sure my blog’s neat and organized so you can always find my own posts. If you’re on desktop you can easily access some other links on the side, but here’s my bigger links if you’re on mobile.

I was asked by a friend yesterday if I could offer basic tips about comic paneling. As it turns out, I have a lot to say on the matter! I tried breaking down the art of paneling using the principles of art and design, and I hope it helps you out!

EDIT: uh uh there are a lot of people reblogging this, so i figure i may as well append this now while i can lol

This whole thing was very much cranked out in a few hours so I had a visual to talk about with a friend! If this gives you a base understanding of paneling, that's awesome! Continue to pull in studies from the comics you see and what other artists do well and don't do well! You can tell paneling is doing well when the action is flowing around in its intended reading format.

Here's the link to the globalcomix article from which I pulled the images about panel staggering! Someone sent in a reblog that it wasn't totally clear that the 7th slide mostly covers what NOT to do in regards to staggering, and that is my mistake!

I saw in a tag that someone was surprised I used MamaYuyu too, and I don't blame them lol. If I had given myself more than a couple hours maybe I would have added something else on, I just really admire MamaYuyu's paneling personally.

uh uh, final append: I am by no means a renowned master of paneling, so if you find anything off base here, by all means, counter it with your own knowledge and ways you can build upon from here! Art is always a sum knowledge of everything we find. 💪

When a Magia comes to be, the element or concept it embodies determines its appearance and traits. Occasionally though, a Magia will form without embodying anything in particular. This results in a pixie, perhaps a Magia in its rawest form.

A pixie most often takes the form of an orb of light, flitting about without aim. It's very fragile, as piercing its core pops it like a bubble. It also doesn't exist for very long, vanishing once it exhausts the supply of energy it was created with.

If a pixie takes shape near civilization, it may gain a humanoid appearance. In this form, it's a bit more robust and moves with purpose, but it's still fairly delicate and short-lived. Pixies of this type have a leg-up in intelligence over their less complex counterpart, but are still far from human cognition. Without much training they can mimic speech, but actually understanding language is a challenge. They normally wouldn't last long enough to do so, but as long as they get 'fed' a steady supply of magical energy, they can exist indefinitely. As a result, they're often kept as pets by those that dabble in magic.

A well-kept and properly trained pixie can become a source of pride for a mage, comparing theirs with those of their peers.

okay this is HUGE??? (clip studio)

For lineart specifically (monochrome stuff), if your layer is in "color" mode, liquify tool will most likely blur it during transformation...

If you set it to "monochrome" first, IT STAYS CRISPY 🤯🤯🤯

It was tested in version 1.x of csp so even if you NEVER upgraded it, it should still work for you!!!

UPDATE!!! (for versions 2.1+)

Professor RivRider is an addict to energy drinks and stayed up late to put the homework post out in a more timely manner! Your mission this week is to try out more gesture drawing using CSI lines, and to practice the 7.5 head proportion method in more contexts!

VOD contains chapter and links to materials referenced on stream.

Additionally, for anyone on here who wants more timely pings than what social media or Twitch can afford, as well as just wanting more pings for when my stuff goes out, I made a server pretty much mostly for pings. It'll also serve as an artchive in the event anything goes under. If that interests you, here's a temporary link, to be replaced with a permalink that'll go in my pinned post eventually:

I hate I when I get an idea for a novel. Like oh no here starts the slow sad slip n’ slide to dissapointment again.

You ever been 30,000 words and hundreds of research hours into a project when you realize hey wait a minute. I don’t like this. This is bad.

Ok adding to this though that even though it is extremely relatable, this is a KNOWN thing with professional writing. 10k is often referred to as "having a pot boiling" or "having a stew" - it's the point where you often see an idea coming together and it's exciting! But THEN... 30k-50k is the point where that fun has to start coming together. In theatre, it's usually week 3 of a 5 week rehearsal period where you have to stop talking about the play and really get it all up on its feet and cohesive. In art, it's committing to what are going to be the final visible layers of colour and texture, in sculpture the moment where you're truly at the point of no return with carving out the shape.

It usually feels really bad. Because this is the point it becomes real craft. It's so, so difficult to really be able to identify if it's truly not going to be anything or you're just in the hardest part of the process, and really the only way to know is to... write through it. Write it badly. Or, if you really can't, put it in a drawer and come back to it after a few months of breathing space. Remember, you can fix so much in the edit, but you can't fix nothing!

(I say, fully looking at my latest draft of my book and considering throwing it in the bin. But my editor said exactly this to me, so I'm passing it along.)

Yeah, I've written about 23 books by now and this is something that always happens. If it was fun all the time, there would be a lot more novelists. The people who finish books are the people who carry on even after it stops being fun. It often becomes fun again later, or at least satisfying. It sucking is just part of the process. Press on!

Apologies for the lateness of the next post-stream homework post! I was wiped and a bit preoccupied on Friday (and the VOD took forever to process hahaah).

I'll have materials ready in advance more often the rest of this workshop. In the meantime, practice feeling out shapes in perspective, as well as the motion in torso beans!

OALSO ALSO

The logistics of getting all these out on social media have already started kicking my ass in just the first week lol. I'm taking a poll to see if anyone would like a very low-key Discord server (no real chatting) to make this easier.
