-----------------------------------------------------------
It's four in the morning, and we're stuck on set filming a few night scenes for an episode of Riverdale. I'm dressed as my Northsider character Annie Watkins, wearing a gray cardigan, white tank top, black leggings, and pink slippers. The scene we are about to film is the one in which Sweet Pea comes stumbling to Annie's doorstep, beaten, bruised, and bleeding. Annie cleans him up, and they become more than friends, long story short. This will be a major relief, or a "finally" moment for all the fans out there, but for me... Well. I'm a nervous wreck.
Here's why: Jordan is going to have to kiss me. And I've had feelings for him for at least eight months now, but I doubt he likes me back. I know that if I kiss him, my feelings will intensify, leaving me feeling even worse about the situation than before. I feel like any kissing scenes might end up making things awkward between us.
"Ready for your scene?" Vanessa asks me almost excitedly.
"... No... Not exactly," I admit.
"Oh, chill out, Y/N. Besides, this scene might give him the courage to just tell you he likes you." When I look at her, confused, she shrugs and looks at Jordan from across the set. "I mean, I think it's pretty obvious."
I scoff. "Yeah right. My eyes travel across the room, landing on him. Damn it, why does he have to look so good in that leather jacket?
The director calls, "Y/N and Jordan, you're on in five minutes."
Vanessa says to me in a hushed tone, "Why don't you make your move before the scene so that kiss can be real? All of us are dreaming of you and him getting together. Literally all of us. So why don't you--"
"No!" I respond just as quietly. "There's no way, Vanessa."
"Fine, do what you want," she says back with an overly dramatic sigh, a smirk tugging on her lips. I know she's up to something, and I'm honestly afraid of what it is.
My eyes follow my best friend as she walks off, and I'm surprised when Jordan's voice comes from right next to me.
"Hey--" He was going to continue, but my startled gasp caught him a little off guard.
"Jesus, Jordan!" I exclaim quietly with a slight laugh, not able to keep myself from admiring how attractive he looks in his Serpent jacket. And let me just say that the makeup artist did a great job at making the bruises and cuts on his face look realistic.
"Sorry, Y/N," he says, wearing that grin of his that never ceases to make the butterflies in my stomach intensify.
"It's fine," I reply cheerfully. "What were you gonna say?"
He hesitates. "I, uh... I was just going to say that it's kind of a relief Annie and Sweet Pea are finally getting together, don't you think?"
"Yeah, I'm excited to see how that turns out."
"Just a warning," Jordan begins, running a hand through his raven-black hair, "I might do a little improv."
"What's that mean?"
He shrugs his broad shoulders and tells me not to worry about it. It just has to do with his lines. "Thought you should know ahead of time so you aren't totally lost when it happens."
Playfully, I say, "I'm hurt by your lack of confidence in me, Jordan."
He grins. "Oh, I have a shit ton of confidence in you, Y/N. No doubt about it. You're gonna do great."
"Thanks," I tell him with a blushing smile that I have to forcefully push down. I can't afford to have him think what's true about my feelings toward him. It's a good thing that I'm an actress.
Then comes a moment of awkward silence that is thankfully cut short by the director saying, "Y/N and Jordan, time to shoot your scene!"
Jordan's heavenly eyes stare down at me and he raises his eyebrows. He seems to be actively trying not to allow the corners of his lips from tugging upward.
I send him a tight-lipped smile, and we turn to head over to where we're going to be filming the first part of this scene: Annie's front porch and living room.
Jordan steps through the front door, turns around and slightly grins at me again before I shut the door and lock it. I go to sit on the couch in front of the burning fireplace, and wait.
"Action!"
Annie is absentmindedly staring into the flames in her fireplace when she hears an urgent and heavy knocking on her front door.
She rushes off the sofa and looks out of the peephole of her door to see a beaten Sweet Pea leaning against the doorframe, out of breath.
"Jesus, Pea," she says, then urging him to come in.
Sweet Pea limps inside and plops down on the sofa while Annie locks the door.
"What the hell happened to you?"
"Damn Ghoulies. They jumped me -- five of them. I could've taken two or three, but--"
"You need to be more careful."
"Annie, it's not my fault. These assholes came outta nowhere, and for no reason at all."
To this, Annie doesn't respond. She goes to get her first aid kit, and when she returns, she grabs a few antiseptic wipes and rips them from their packages.
"Thank God you're not too badly cut up," she comments as she cleans the blood off of his knuckles.
"Annie, I can do this myself." She ignores him. "Here, just let me--" Sweet Pea tries to take the wipe out of her hand, but she pulls away to give him a look.
"No. It's better to have another person do it for you. Stop being so stubborn and just let me do this for you."
It takes her a little less than a minute to get a new wipe for the minor cuts on his face. She starts with the one on his left cheekbone, then goes to the scrape on his opposite cheek. While she does this, Sweet Pea is staring intently at her face.
This is making me freak the hell out. I feel like my heart is nearly bursting out of my chest.
Sweet Pea asks Annie, "Why do you care so much?"
This is straying slightly from the script, but that doesn't worry me much.
"I don't know," Annie says, "I just do. I care about you a lot, Sweets. Is that a problem?"
He seems unsure of what to say.
Then I remember, the kiss isn't supposed to happen for at least another minute. Wait, what are the rest of our lines? Damn it, I'm so nervous right now that I forgot the script. All I can remember is that I'm supposed to clean his split lip. But when? Why not do it now, I guess?
Annie's hand moves to dab at the cut on his lip, and on her skin, she feels the slow breath falling from his mouth.
I suddenly remember one of my lines.
"So," Annie begins, "what are we gonna do about those--"
She is cut off by Sweet Pea pulling her face closer and capturing her lips with his.
God, why did he want to improvise? It would've been better for me if I knew exactly when the kiss was going to happen.
Sweet Pea gently pulls away while Annie can do nothing but sit there in shock. His chocolate-brown eyes stare at her face, trying to analyze her feelings. He asks her, "Annie, are you okay?"
Without saying a word in response, she leans forward and kisses him passionately. A quiet noise of surprise escapes his throat, but he shuts his eyes and kisses back.
This continues on for a little more than ten seconds, until the director says, "And... Cut!"
But the thing is, Jordan doesn't pull away for another short moment. When he does, he looks in my eyes and smiles softly. "You did great, Y/N. Glad the improv didn't mess you up."
I playfully roll my eyes. "Uh huh. Took me by surprise though."
Jordan shrugs his broad shoulders and tells me, "I thought it'd make the scene more believable."
We both stand, and I walk toward Vanessa, Lili, KJ, and Cole, who all happen to be standing a few feet from the set.
"He lingered," says Lili in a hushed voice. Her smile is widening by the second, and it seems as if she's about to burst. "You had to have noticed it, Y/N. He lingered."
"I told you, didn't I?" Vanessa insists.
I sigh, shaking my head. "I won't believe it unless he tells me."
KJ gives me a half smile. "You wouldn't believe it even if he said so himself. You'd look around to see if there were any cameras rolling, like you're on a prank show."
He's not completely wrong, but I don't admit that to him. I simply watch as Cole shakes his head and tells us he'd be right back. And he walks over to Jordan.
My heart races as I watch the two of them walk off to speak privately.
Jordan's pov
When Cole pulls me off the set, I'm utterly confused. What's this about, and why does it have to be private?
As soon as we're in another part of the set, he says, "You like Y/N." He doesn't say it as a question.
"I, uh... What?" I say back, mentally cringing for being unable to sound casual. After a few seconds of watching him stare at me with a raised eyebrow, I sigh and ask him, "Is it that obvious?"
Cole nods. "Why don't you just tell her, man?"
I sigh heavily. "I don't know. I guess I'm afraid of being turned down, you know?"
"So is she."
"But she doesn't..." My voice trails off as he gives me a look that says I should realize something. I blink a few times and comment, "Shit."
Y/N's pov
It takes a minute for them to come back, and my heart is still pounding. I'm afraid of what Cole told Jordan; I don't want Jordan to say, "Listen, you're great and all, but..."
My stomach drops when Jordan approaches and asks me, "Can I talk to you for a second?"
"Yeah, sure." I'm sort of surprised by the calmness of my voice, but then again, I'm an actress. Acting is what I do.
I don't budge, and he asks me to come with him.
When we're alone, I stop acting calm and say to him, "Listen, I don't know what Cole told you--"
"I, uh... I like you too." This catches me completely off guard, and I simply stand there with a look of pure shock plastered on my face.
My perception of time must be messed up; I must've been staring at him like that for so long, it concerns him.
"... Are you okay?"
I snap out of my daze. "Yeah. Yeah, I'm f-fine."
The corner of his lips stretch out into a small grin. His warm brown eyes stare into mine as his smile fades somewhat. He asks me, "Do you wanna, maybe... go to dinner sometime?"
"As long as I get to pick the restaurant." When Jordan laughs lightly, I tell him, "I'm just kidding. There are no conditions to this date."
"On a different note, I'm really glad we're co-stars. And... I'm also really glad our characters are gonna start being all romantic with each other. Makes it easier on me."
"How so?" I ask with a grin.
He takes my hand in his and explains, "Then I don't have to save my affection till we aren't on camera."
