Q Hayashida’s manga series “Dorohedoro” manga series will be receiving a TV anime adaptation.

-Synopsis-

The film deals with a particular sub-cultural phenomenon within the vast world of Japanese comics (‘manga’). During the early 1970s, manga fans began to create their own amateur manga, many of them using characters from their favorite stories that appeared in mainstream manga magazines. These they published themselves and sold in little conventions of like-minded people. ‘Comiket’, now the world’s largest comics convention, began as one such amateur manga event, where self-published authors would put up little stalls and buy and sell each other’s comics. Now Comiket is held twice yearly and attracts 500,000 people, more than half of them girls. The film focuses on a few such women authors, trying to understand the roots of this unique cultural phenomenon, and its strong yet subtle influence on contemporary Japanese society. The film also explores the social and economic structure that supports this kind of artistic activity, and the positive role that it plays in the lives of Japanese people.

It looks like Gilbert is giving a thumbs up, which is pretty hilarious, haha.

The second piece from my ongoing “Tokyo Storefronts” watercolour illustration series. This time, to make some contrast with the previous, really colourful meat shop I chose a little bit more industrial building. 

It is the (former) TSURUYA tailors in Jinbōchō district now a cute antiques and variety shop. The top round sign - a trademark of this shop was unfortunately already taken down when I got there to take some photos so I had to add it using some old photos I found in the Internet. On one of the photos there was a small chair in front of the shop’s entrance - so peculiar I couldn’t ignore it.

連載中の水彩イラストシリーズ「東京店構え」の二枚目です。一枚目のすごくカラフルな肉屋と、コントラストになりそうなインダストリアルな建物を選びました。神保町にある（元）鶴谷洋服店です。 特徴的な丸い看板は残念ながらもうありませんが、古い写真を参考にして足しました。

I had no idea this even existed, but it’s quite fantastic! It’s a segment from the NHK series Shojo comic o kaku about drawing shojo manga, where they visit a new manga artist in every episode and film them drawing. These 12 segments are up on youtube:

The commentator is Satonaka Machiko, herself a legendary manga artist.

eta: This is also quite funny because a lot of the artists are drawing manga while dressed in pretty dresses and wearing perfect makeup, lol. They would never unless there was a camera there.

Shimizu Reiko’s three artbooks — Aria (1990), Waltz (1995), and Kaguyahime (2002) — have been released as ebooks!

While I think that holding an artbook in your hands is a completely different experience from owning it electronically, all three of these artbooks have been out of print for years and I’ve long been thinking about picking them up secondhand, so this was great news for me. They’re only about 10 USD each!

I’ve been asked about where to find the Yowamushi Pedal manga, so I thought of compiling a list with the websites you can download or read it online.

Today, on the first day of a new LOGH live stage it has been announced that a new anime adaption of Legend of the Galactic Heroes is on the makings.

The novels written by Yoshiki Tanaka (author of Arslan Senki, which is currently having a manga adaptation by FMA’s Hiromu Arakawa) already…

This is some pretty incredible news! It’s kind of sad that Noburo Ishiguro along with the seiyuu for a few main characters passed away before the announcement though; personally I think it would be strange to hear Oberstein and Yang with different voices.

Regardless depending on how this goes it can be a great way to introduce anime fans that are unfamiliar with the franchise or too intimidated to take a try at watching it.

もっと! Vol.5 (増刊Eleganceイブ)

Shigeru Mizuki is featured widely in this relative new magazine, which is released quarterly by Akita Shoten. It is a additional magazine to the magazine Eleganceイブ. While Eleganceイブ is a shojo mag ,もっと! features a mix of different styles, between alternative and mainstream, also things aimed at no specific gender . The newest Junji Ito is also published in here.
