I find it so funny how Bucky was this big serious character for like 3 films and then marvel realised Sebastian was hilarious and now Bucky is funny.
So it got me thinking about Bucky before the war and how he probably was one of those people who’s just naturally funny, but like, also uses it to mask pain. Or makes inappropriate jokes at the absolute wrong time. Like, we now know that Bucky was as bad as Steve for doing stupid and reckless shit (see: letting Zemo out of prison.) and its got me thinking.
So I want you to imagine this:
- Bucky Barnes cracking jokes while he and Steve are facing bullies, and they are just inappropriate and will definitely get them hit. Steve’s just like, “Bucky please be quite,” but Bucky’s on a roll. Just cracking one liners about the leaders mom or whatever. They end up being beaten up and Bucky’s got a bloody nose. Steve calls him deranged and Bucky just grins like a weirdo covered in blood.
- Bucky not knowing how to deal with sad news. Like, if you’ve ever seen the comedian Daniel Sloss talk about how he reacted to death as a kid then that’s what I mean. Bucky gets told his great aunt has past away and he’s just… awkward. he does cry but it’s for like 2 minutes and then he picks himself up and he’s a bit like “well schools gunna suck today I guess,” But it’s not because he doesn’t feel sad, it’s because he covers everything up with humour and a brave face.
- Bucky will do absolutely anything to make people who are sad laugh. Or at least feel better. He’s not an asshole, he knows that sometimes you need to wait until someone’s all cried out before you start telling jokes, but he and Steve have always had a relationship where something terrible can happen and they’re still be taking the piss out out of each other.
- Bucky being, just a bank of terrible dad jokes and bad humour. Puns are Bucky’s weapons of choice and he has plagued Steve with fish jokes all their lives.
- Bucky giggling at his own jokes before he’s even said them.
- Most people think he’s slightly insane, because he has absolutely no filter in terms of joking around.
- Bucky whispering jokes to Steve in quiet places to try to get him to crack. Whether it’s in the cinema, or a test, it doesn’t matter to Bucky. If he can make Steve laugh he knows it’s a good day.
- Sarah Rogers and Winifred Barnes spending most of their lives telling him off for cracking jokes at the wrong time. Like they will be in the street talking to an old friend; or Sarah will be talking to the parish priest and Bucky will be making Steve giggle like a maniac. They get warned once and then Bucky makes a really inappropriate joke in front of the priest or whoever their talking to. Sarah and Winifred will scold him and cuff him around the head, and then Steve for good measure too. Steve will squawk “what did I do??” And their mothers will say, “your egging him on Steven Grant Rogers!”
- Bucky using humour during the war to cover how shit scared he is. The pure amount of fish jokes that appear is truely distressing to Steve. Steve try’s to get him to talk it out quite often but Bucky will snap back with a witty reply that has the howlies (for lack of a less punny option.) howling and shuts Steve down.
- He uses slightly barbed humour with Peggy at first, but she gives as good as she gets and soon the snippy back and forth they have becomes less venomous and more friendly, even if Bucky still is low key jealous of her relationships with Steve (or rather, the weird awkward almost flirting they do.)
- After Bucky comes back in the 21st century his humour takes a while to come back and when it does it’s changed. It’s a lot darker humour, a little self deprecating, a bit more sharp in delivery. He doesn’t really make jokes at inappropriate times anymore, and most of it is made at his own expense instead of others.
- He’d use humour when he’s hurt or when he’s depressed. Just start getting supper sarcastic and self deprecating to make people stop looking at his pain. It takes a long time to try and stop that with his therapist.
- Once Bucky is back on his feet again, he’s back to trying to make Steve laugh. He notices straight away that Steve doesn’t laugh much anymore. Not at Tony or Clint; he sometimes laughs with Sam but he has this hollow look in his eyes that makes Bucky’s skin crawl. So Bucky tries his hardest to make Steve laugh; really laugh.
- He makes jokes at Tony’s expense. He joins in with Sams jokes and gentle ribbing. He starts whispering jokes in Steve’s ears during meetings, making his best friend snort inelegantly. He cracks one liners on missions and even goes as far as starting to tickle Steve randomly.
- Bucky blows raspberry’s on Steve’s cheeks when he kisses him. Rubs their noses together to make him giggle and generally tries to be cute and funny to make Steve smile.
- Bucky’s humour gets lighter as he makes progress with his recovery and soon some of that old silly, slightly inappropriate and ill timed humour comes back.
- One day Bucky makes a weird fish joke without registering what he’s saying. Steve stares at him and then when Bucky’s confused and about to ask why Steve keeps looking at him like that, Steve hurls himself at Bucky; laughing more then he ever has at one of Bucky’s stupid fish jokes.
- Bucky would learn not to cover his pain with humour and eventually he’d be okay with crying for more than two minutes before locking right up.
I just think Bucky would be one of the funniest people but also he suffers a lot too.

Summary: Steve remembers seeing the statue of winged victory. He never thought it possible angels were real. He should’ve known better. Norse gods are real now. And James, or Bucky, as he introduced himself…he looks angelic, especially in this light. Even if he says that’s not what he is, that he’s something different. He deserves statues in his name. It’s not his wings that make Steve feel like he’s close to something divine.

I wanted to say something but actually I think the picture stands for itself
Yeah, there's not much to say that would improve this to be honest
He looks like he just got home from a wild night. Lying on the floor... Open pants... One shoe missing
It's amazing and it took my way too long to get that screenshot
