Random portrait of John Silver, acrylics 18x24 cm

Recently I bought some acrylic paints and canvases to brush up (heh) my traditional painting skills since I have been drawing mostly digital art for the last couple of years. I want to have some big paintings on my wall at some point in the future so I decided to practise with small ones first.

And well, I enjoy drawing Silver, so what better subject to start with :D Although this ended up looking like some sort of Jesus painting which is a bit disturbing... and I'm not sure if I should still define some parts or not (like the hair or his jacket) but I'm afraid of ruining it so I'll probably just add some varnish to finish this (and practise spreading that stuff)... Anyway, so I decided to share this one now then. Please, do not repost elsewhere :)

#john silver #my art #black sails #I want a huge door-sized half-abstract painting of a ship sailing on merry waves towards the viewer #and can't do it yet xD #no space not enough paint and time and not enough skill with this medium yet so it might take a couple of years xD #for some reason I have always felt uneasy with acrylics and oil colours and was more familiar with watercolour #(maybe it was the price and the fear of wasting paint...but also not actually having enough paint and proper canvases...and space)#I don't like the canvas pattern here and it showing through so much so I'll try adding gesso and sandpapering it smoother with the next one #I also tried adding some highlights to his hair and even scratching with a blade but my efforts looked bad so I gave up #some proportions were and still are a bit wonky but that's exactly why I need to practise more traditional mediums #and colour use from the get-go instead of playing with settings later #but all in all I'm surprised how well this turned out! :D

At the wrecks, John Silver sees a way out ~

Inspired by the scenes in Black Sails season 1 when Silver is on the run with the stolen page and his pursuers are closing in...

This went through a lot of stages and ended up being a very romanticized version of what actually happened, lol. Please, do not repost elsewhere :)

#black sails #john silver #black sails fanart #my art #originally I was going to practise line work and flat colours and simple patterns in stylistic manner etc #but I didn't get it to work that way and gave up #and just did what felt good lol #the filename was SaintNew because I wanted to make another version of the piece I did like 2-3 years ago #with the same scene and escape although different composition #and because the moonlight halo and veil looked cool and saint-y like saint of thieves lol #the first sketch for this one was around august in 2019 tho #and again I just let it sit and occasionally continued it until finishing it now #also the shawl / veil / rag is a lot more glamorous here than in the actual scene #lol #he looks like he has a flu ooops #I was also listening to the Prince of Egypt's Finnish soundtrack while working #especially the song right in the beginning #if you know the scene with the mother #and that too bled into this #ANYway I really like how this turned out :)

Thomas Jopson, The Terror season 1

At first there was only the red one (like his lovely sweater, hehe) but then I thought about the later episodes and ended up continuing this simultaneously into another version as well... ;_;

Those magnificent sideburns were, well, glorious, so of course I had to draw him at some point... Please, do not repost elsewhere :)

P.S. There’s probably way too much sunlight in this picture but I couldn’t resist the temptation as the days are finally so lovely and bright after the long dark winter so... it bled into this art too, lol.

Some of my favourite Black Sails art pieces that I finally finished and posted in 2019!

Not in any particular order, as some months had several pieces while others a little less. I couldn’t even fit all of my faves... but I take that as a good sign :)

I’m also quite delighted how much warmth and life there is! It’s fun to notice in retrospect how some themes repeat and re-emerge and how much I have learned... xD

#black sails doodle #max #bs max #my art #I started this is in April wtf (and continued it occasionally until now finally finishing)#then I needed to finish the other painting of Anne so I could post them together :)#I wanted to try something different this time #and finally drew her face well #the posture is quite similar to the earlier one with eleanor and paper heart #although I did start this one waaay earlier so I guess it got carried into that other one too #I am really pleased with this #notice ''the crown of lights'' by the way :)#for the adorable queen #I wanted the focus on Max so I didn't draw the brothel milieu (plus I was lazy and thought it didn't really need that detailed bg)#I'm so glad I kept continuing this although occasionally it felt like I would never finish this (esp. her face)
