Rec List for the final day of @zkfanworkweek !!

(It’s hard to believe this week is over.... 😭)

I’m going to try to list these in an organized manner, no guarantees. There will be a few repeat authors- take that as an excuse to read all of their works... please. I can’t list them all, but I do love them all...

Caveat at the start: mind the tags/rating. I will not be accountable if you choose to ignore them and read on.

G - T One Shots

G - T WIPs

G - T Complete

My tablet is giving me problems, so I’m going to make a second post with the M - E rated fics for this list and a third for artists, and link them all together.

G - T / M - E / Artists

Holy crap, I forgot about these lists… please take a look for some classics and some amazing stories. Make sure to look over all three bottom links for two ratings criteria and one artists.

There are so many stinking good stories here.

Hello, I am here to recommend an amazing and incredibly underrated Zutara fic called “Moral of the Story” by gemgirl28 for when you’re in an angsty mood. It’s under 3,000 words and it just broke me. The writer is amazing.

Finally got around to reading this, thanks for the rec.

When you said angst, you meant it! This was so sad but very nicely written!

It's on fanfic.net for anyone who wants to also check it out!

Just happened to see this as I was scrolling before bedtime and 😭😭😭

It’s always interesting to see people interact with the few angsty things I’ve done because I usually written them when I’m working through irl stuff.

Anyways thank you both for your kind words 💜💜💜

I think some people (myself included) think that 100k is short because we are used to reading fic of more than 250k but you are right. I know that 100k is a lot of work and effort but that does not mean that because of our very twisted way of seeing things, we do not value every word that writers share with us (or at least that is my case)

hmm i’ve seen people say “i won’t read a fic if it’s less than 300k because it’s not worth my time,” and i’ve seen people demand more more more more despite a writer giving them a 80-100k story (a literal book). so i get that reading fic of more than 250k might skew perception, but even 20k, 40, 80k — that’s a lot of work. time. effort. thought. care. not all writers have the time or energy to write 800k epics. it doesn’t make their work any less worth praise and love, which is what i’d really like this fandom to wrap its head around.

If this is you, I honestly urge you to like ... reconsider your thoughts on this? It takes so bloody long to write stuff. Way longer than you might expect.

I write fast. I average 1k an hour. This, as far as I can tell, is much faster than is typical. So lets say it takes me 100 hours to write 100k. Those hours then have to be broken down into what is actually achievable in a day. You can't write for 10 hours every day unless you're on a coke binge. I might do 4 on a weekend day, 2 on a weekday, because I have a job, other hobbies, and responsibilities. Not accounting for rest days or things coming up that prevent me from writing, it might take me 6 weeks to write an initial draft of a 100k story, by these metrics. Then comes the editing. I read everything I post at least 3 times to check flow, SPAG, and other things. This takes way more time than reading a fic normally because you're consciously taking in every word and every bit of grammar. During this, you write your edits and your additions. You might send it to a beta and they then have to take the time to read your fic.

All up, that 100k story probably took 14 weeks for me to complete. And, remember, that is quicker than it may be for most.

Devaluing medium length stories can kill a fandom. Those are your bread and butter, the stories you go back to again and again because you can read them in one sitting. These are the majority of fics. Most fics are not 200k+ and they are sure as shit no less valuable and no less deserving of love and appreciation than longer works.

Not to mention, not every great fic has to be an epic? Sometimes the best stories that give you the most fulfillment are the ones that are about a low-stakes mystery or centre around your ship cooking breakfast or waking up together or just loving each other in everyday situations. Maybe this is an age thing, I don't know. But not every story needs to rip your heart out of your chest. Sometimes the best ones wrap you in a blanket and give you a glimpse at your favourite characters living an easier, more idyllic life than you yourself get to. That's not to say that shorter stories can't make you feel intense emotions, but this is a common argument that I see. I just don't think it's a valid one.

As an aside, most novels are 60k-100k. Nobody is looking at The Hunger Games or Catcher in the Rye and thinking they're too short and not worth the bother. So why do it to fics?

Y'all, the author has to be Quite Good to have a coherent plot past about 150k. I'd rather have a fistful of exquisite 25k fics over one monster 350k that really ought to be a series.

So…these people wouldn’t read quite a few incredibly famous novels, then.

Most modern novels are 100-120k.

Novels from last century (outside the fantasy genre) were much shorter.

Many early 20th century novels are 50k ish.

Speaking AS a fanfiction writer who writes longfic-- a lot of those 300k fanfics would be trimmed in editing or published as a series if they were traditionally published.

Anybody devaluing stories for being under 300k is being exceptionally foolish.

for real, if you see a fic that seems abandoned but you really want to see if it might be completed

i would genuinely suggest not mentioning the fact its abandoned at all. instead, just leave the most effusive comment you can. tell the author specifically what you liked. if they are in a position they might continue it, you might remind them what they liked about the story, and thus maybe revive it.

that is probably your best bet to get a story finished, much more than asking “hey is this abandoned” or asking for it to be continued.

I am living, frustrating proof of this.

I just found this again, and as a reminder, this remains true of any of my unfinished fics. None are abandoned, just clawing at my consciousness to once more gain its attention.

Complete fics posted on AO3 this day

Harry doesn’t know how to cope after the War. The only things that make him feel even remotely normal again are taking risks while flying and fighting with Malfoy. It’s not likely to end well. Or, Draco becomes obsessed with ‘Wonderwall’, reads Muggle books, and drives a campervan, while Harry slowly falls in love with Draco. A story about travelling around the British Isles in the late 90s while healing deep scars.

Harry has a sneaking suspicion that Draco Malfoy is his new Villain of The Week.

Most of the time, it’s easy for Harry to forget that Draco Malfoy is his next-door neighbour—until the night Malfoy seemingly goes round the twist in his back garden. Of course Harry has to investigate.

“Are you just going to stand there staring, or are you going to join me, Malfoy?” Harry asked, his elbows leaning over the edge of the tub in the Prefect’s bathroom.

Fest/Exchange

The first time Draco and Harry see each other after the War, they don’t speak. The second time they see each other after the War, they fight. And the third time they see each other after the War, neither of them is human anymore. HP Law of Attraction Fest | @hp-lawofattraction-fest

Reblogging to point out that the fic attributed to firefairylights in this list was plagiarised from a Dramione fic by @shellyshelby called hearts that intertwine.

Firefairylights has plagiarised multiple Dramione fics and turned them into Drarrys, including one of my own. They have been reported already, but please make sure you go onto their works list and look for fics you recognise from Dramione (or other fandoms!) so we can identify as many of their stolen works as possible.

Further reblog to say that all the plagiarised fics have now been either deleted or orphaned from firefairylights’ profile, but they’ve apparently got another profile under the name skull_and_bones and have reposted one of the plagiarised fics already.

Watch out for this one – they’re bloody stubborn, it seems.

Running into each other in the elevator post breakup 🥺

(don’t worry, they get back together. Look at Draco, he’s just about to word vomit his feelings out 🤗)

I forgot how much this one made me feel things….
