This is the kind of thing that happened when you let Theodore Sturgeon  (God rest him) loose on television. Because if there was anything that Ted Sturgeon understood and wrote well, it was love: how it goes wrong, and how it goes right.

…A happy addendum: apparently the University of Kansas has Ted’s papers, including his original notes and outline for this episode.

Interesting to note also (scroll down here to the section “Background information: story and script”) that there was more Vulcan in Ted’s first draft, including Spock’s description of Jim and Bones as “lak noy” (his “best men”) and the wedding party coming to a sudden halt in a flurry of consternation and Vulcan-language discussion until T'Pau shuts them all up.
