name: strongarm

series: robots in disguise one-step changers (Hasbro 2014/15)

notes: *sigh* okay guys, this here is a tough one. from the small sampling we’ve had of the new show the element that most have been excited about is strongarm. she’s a badass cop-bot that doesn’t fall into the usual “girl robots need boobs, right?” design of female characters. she looks hella cool and while i can’t wait to see her in the show, this figure is actually pretty bad.

her alt-mode is great, don’t get me wrong, and her transformation is unique and pretty cool on it’s own- but neither of them can excuse the piss-poor robot mode. if you can’t tell over 95% of the figure ends up as backpack that sticks out like a sore thumb.  balancing isn’t too bad, but it’s just not great to look at. the one-steps aren’t really known for their incredible accuracy granted, but even then this is pretty horrid. from the side it looks completely flat and getting her arms to move at all is delicate work as they’re wibbling all over. the paints okay and the detail is fine, but there is not a whole lot of playability to this one, sadly.

I was disappointed with her initially as well. The fun, though, is the transformation process for me. I like the way she transforms even if the results aren't that great. Great write up, BTW.

On the Subject of Megatron…

I mentioned that I do not like the Masterpiece Megatron figure and I want to expand on that. I found it excessively complicated to transform with the end results being an oversized gun mode and an iffy robot mode. I understand the designers have to work within the confines of the alternate mode, but Megatron just doesn't look imposing enough.

Hardly any of the Megatron toys do, in my opinion. The original toy, while I appreciate the design, is a thin-legged misfit. The Action Master, while better proportioned with the transformation out the window was too small. The Generation 2 large, green tank was too big and the Gobot too small (again). The Combat Hero version, however, is close to my vision of Megatron perfection. If it were a little bigger, say today's voyager size class, with added detail or articulation, I would say he's the embodiment of the original Megatron.

I know I'm skipping over Machine Wars and the ATB bomber that wasn't (was? who knows? whatever) released. There's also the Classics/Generations toys, but he's not a jet (x2), head sculpt is meh, he's not a samurai, and (again) not a jet. Well, for me at any rate. Your mileage may vary.

Please don't take this post to mean that my opinion is right and everyone else is wrong. This is just one of the many things I've thought about for a while now and need to get it out of me before it eats me alive. I feel Megatron gets the shaft on his toys and hope that someday the definitive version will be made.

Star Rescue Team | Star Cats | TFC Toys | 2014 |

The idea of doing a “proper” review of this group is quite stressful to me. So, in the interest of my own mental health I will offer some commentary instead. Please bear with me as I ramble on.

As a display piece, the Star Rescue Team is pretty nifty. The individual bots are nice as are the alt modes, except the one that you can see the robot head behind the windshield. As a toy, however, this set fails spectacularly.

There are many parts that need to be filed down to function properly. So, have a file and nail clippers handy. The quality of the plastic is between Hasbro/Tomy and knock off. Also, the instructions are poor at best. You need a good amount of intuition to convert the team even using instructions. There are a number of accessories that just don’t seem to go anywhere and there’s no documentation (included or online) that helps.

I don’t completely regret this purchase. I really like these guys (and gals?). It feels like things were rushed and if more time was given in developing the Star Rescue Team these could’ve been phenomenal toys. As they are now, they’re just average. YMMV.
