Galvatron | Beast Wars II | Takara | 1998|
The Emperor of Destruction has returned to my collection. Galvatron hails from Beast Wars II, which I know little about story-wise other than he’s a Predacon that rules over a motly crew battling against Lio Convoy and his Maximals.
While I love this figure and the way he changes from robot to tank to dragon, I’d really like to see an updated version using today’s technology. I doubt that will ever happen as he’s fairly obscure compared to other Transformers series. Still, a guy can dream, can he not?
Galvatron’s dragon mode is a thing of beauty. It resembles some of the monsters from Japan’s live-action films. His mouth opens and his neck can pivot in five places. His arms are akin to a tyrannosaurus in that they’re small and not very useful. Each has two points of articulation, which can lead to some humorous poses. Sliding a button on his back makes his wings flap forward and back. All in all, dragon mode is my favorite with Galvatron.
The drill tank mode covers up the dragon head and neck, folds the wings back, and tucks the legs underneath. Considering the technology of the late 90’s, it turned out fairly well. Sure, the dragon tail sticks out like a sore thumb, but I think it’s a neat alien drill tank. Push the button on the back and watch that drill spin!
Finally, we come to Galvatron’s robot mode. He’s a grimacing, menacing emperor of destruction. His has good articulation throughout, though his head could stand to be on a ball-joint rather than a swivel. He’s also no slouch in the weapons department. He chain guns on his kneecaps, two short blades he can hold in either hand or launch from his arms, his wing assembly detaches to form giant pincers, and then there’s his Galva-Matrix in his chest. It holds his spark and enables him to absorb Angolmois energy. I don’t know what that is, but it can’t be a good thing.
Galvatron is a great toy with good transformation and modes that won’t leave you wondering if you forgot a step. He’s worth picking up in my book.
"RAAAAAAYYYYAAAAAARRRRRRGGGGHHHHHH!!!!!"
"First, you two let Scourge and Starscream steal one of Trypticon's eyes. And then you two allowed Astrotrain to be used as their escape vehicle. So Scourge is helping Starscream voluntarily, and you four were unable to stop them! Well, all I can say is...BWWWAAAAAAA!"
