Me: I’m dealing with too much brain fog and exhaustion to work on a paper, so I’m chatting with friends while I recharge because that takes less energy. This is frustrating to me too and I wish I could work, but I can’t

My mom: Hmm well you’re taking too long to recharge so I’m going to be rude and mean to you and say you should force yourself to do a crap job at this anyway because it’s not up to my standards

Me: …How the hell do you think that’s helpful. At all.

I’d like one medical exemption from math classes please /hj

Ugh I feel like I can’t even talk to my mom about this because there’s at least some likelihood she’ll explode in some way because of her own issues with overthinking things and worry for me turning into the opposite of encouragement

Okay thankfully that likelihood did not end up mapping onto reality this time. I’m gonna be calling an advisor and seeing what I can do since if I want to switch classes I’ll have to do that fairly soon

Okay I talk about how my childhood was like a weird ass time warp to 70s/80s conservative america because of yknow,, it being a cult.. But like, I just realized how that was a pretty even split with early 2000s america (the time it actually was) in elementary school at least, and for some reason that’s really funny to me

Like yeah okay there’s third graders with Justin Bieber haircuts and beyblades, kids wearing jeans under skirts and bedazzled t shirts, but there were ALSO toys in the classrooms that were popular from anywhere from the 60s to the 1850s (literally we had sticks and hoops to play with in recess), no phones made past 1980, all the original interior things from the late 70s when the school was built, etc etc

Kind of a wild combo there

Since I started doing bullet journaling to try (note: try) to keep my thoughts organized, I was thinking about all the stupid bullshit standards there were for papers in middle school. Like…

  • No wrinkles or tears (or evidence of un-wrinkling)
  • In cursive unless it was notes
  • In pen (& no evidence of writing in pencil underneath and then erasing it, even though I did this dozens of times)
  • If in pencil, no evidence of erasing
  • Probably more I forget

Do you know how many times I had to restart papers before I decided to ditch these behind the teacher’s backs?? Like seriously. None of these are needed for a paper.

Anyway, totally ditching these, I’ll do whatever I like and even though I’m aiming for neatness, that’s because I want it to look neat, literally no one is grading me on this shit

Apparently my best friend/companion’s class (which is in the cult school I grew up in/left) was having a debate about what should be the guidelines for US citizenship, and all the guys agreed that only straight people should be US citizens. The teacher seemed a bit shook by that but couldn’t really say anything since the school vocally doesn’t support queer people, and she’s part of the administration.

So, not surprising, but I’m posting about it both as a reminder to myself (and possibly others from similar environments) about the casual bigotry that can happen in enclosed environments like that

Mmm I don’t think I’m ever going to forgive the PE teachers I grew up with, and everyone who backed them up, for making one of the things that could make my POTS symptoms better inaccessible because they ignored my protests as a kid and forced me to put up with those symptoms, which wore down my ability to tell whether I was ok or not and made many forms of exercise traumatizing and triggering

i got through 21 years without directly experiencing religious abuse and now my school is really kinda making up for lost time haha this is fine

(last anon cont) chilling in my literature seminar, learning about how questioning authority is a crime as bad as murder 🙃

Honestly kudos to you avoiding it that long (not that that’s something you can actively control as a kid but you get my point), take care bro

Really though, feel free to mock it and make it into an internal comedy sketch, or listen to clown music in your mind or headphones if you can sneak them in, or come up with a playlist with countering messages (and just some feel good songs to help you feel better), or just very heavily lean into the sarcasm when answering questions or doing quizzes, that shit sucks and I hope you get through it alright 💜

Acellus history going over the Crusades: yeah so the children’s crusade was awful and horrible. That sucked

Acellus history going over colonization of the Americas: oh yeah we totally acknowledge that the Indigenous people didn’t want Europeans to be there, but we’ll just phrase it like it’s just someone coming over uninvited and it’s a big party and we’re totally going to focus on how Europe saw the Americas as a treasure continent basically, and not more like someone blowing up your house and taking your stuff after torturing your family

[ID: Dr. Doofenshmirtz “if I had a nickel” meme. The captions read: if I had a nickel for every time I had to learn poorly summarized, Eurocentric history curriculum used/written by a cult, I’d have two nickels. Which isn’t a lot, but it’s weird that it happened twice. /End ID]

I have trouble sympathizing with "what remote learning is doing to our children!" when the old way of doing things was literally infamous for inducing a lifetimes worth of nightmares

Both are bad and children should be homeschooled.

as someone who got homescholled for my high school years, homeschool also bad and there is no one size fits all solution to education

Nothing like the thrill of being a Good Student™️ for ten+ years and building up a reputation as responsible and hard-working, and then when work gets too hard because of lack of accommodations and accessibility, you go to your teacher/advisor/whatever, prepared to leverage the fact that if they can’t be assed to give reasonable accommodations, then you’re willing to take it into your own hands and not do some of the assignments that are worth the least out of self preservation
