Ty Lee and Mai were canonically in prison with the Kyoshi Warriors, and the next time we see them, Ty Lee has outright befriended and joined the warriors; Mai is happy to see Zuko after he helped topple Ozai’s reign, and then she is later shown to be wearing an Earth Kingdom dress as she quietly- but not discontentedly- mingles with a rebel group from all four nations, of which one of them is the Avatar of all people

Sure, they didn’t outright say “we realized the fire nation and our past imperialist actions were wrong, actually!” like Zuko did, but it’s pretty much implied that they reflected on it anyway, you don’t have to look too deep into the subtext to see that. The Mai and Ty Lee at the end of the show aren’t the same Mai and Ty Lee we’re introduced to, and they didn’t have to have a Zuko-level character arc to show that they also have grown and changed

obsessed with how the avatar wiki says "Chi blocking is an ancient technique that has been practiced in secret for centuries" but only cites a lok comic-con panel from 2011 as the source. like. that is it, thats all the thought they gave to the history of chi blocking and they didn't write that into any part of the universe

there is nothing in atla canon tying chi-blocking to a person or group in the timeline before ty lee. from what we are shown it would not be unreasonable to conclude ty lee invented the practice herself.

it’s the gaps they leave open for ty lee (and so many other side characters) that make her so interesting to me. there’s nothing stopping me from concluding air nomad ty lee learned chi blocking as a defensive fighting style from her relatives who after sozin’s comet could no longer use airbending for self defense
