Short answer: They are so fricking adorable and perfect for eachother
Long answer: Mai and Zuko are eachother’s Achilles heel, and that is such a dangerous thing in their society, yet they love eachother without shame and without cost. I mean, they really do bring out the best in eachother. With Zuko, Mai feels safe enough to fully express herself, and despite her family telling her all her life that she should neither be seen nor heard, Zuko wants to know and love every part of her. With Mai, Zuko gets the reassurance that he’s not stupid or dumb for the way he thinks and acts, despite all of Ozai’s court suggesting that’s exactly what he is. Mai’s betrayal of Azula wasn’t an “I’ve realized the Fire Nation is bad thing.” It was an “I don’t know what my boyfriend is doing or why he’s doing it but I love and trust him so I’ll protect him.” And that’s the best kind of love. When all you know is that you love someone and you’ll do anything for them. Zuko is Mai’s safe space. He makes her smile and laugh, and she feels safe enough to express her anger outright. It might trigger a fight, but nothing is ever enough to keep them from eachother, and I think they’re perfect for that.
