Just a little bit of chaos at Falsworth Mansion
Tragic this never happened in the MCU
Do you think Captain America and Namor are friends like Erik and Charles were friends before Krakoa? in the sense one or the other whishes they could bring them to their way of thinking? I have read some meta about them no longer being as clase as they used to be when they were invaders and wanted to know you take on this.
Imo Steve and Namor have grown apart in recent years but the memory and nostalgia of their old friendship keeps them tied together.
Steve & Namor are worlds different from Charles & Erik (thank fuck) because while they might have their differences both never stoop to using kids as pawns in a game between the other, they face each other head on.
I feel like Steve in the recent years isn't allowed to be wrong when it comes to Namor, like Namor is a flawed character but everything he does, he does for the survival of his people. Steve seeks to protect everyone but his priority is humans, he says he cares for Atlanteans but in all their years in comics he has only helped Atlanteans a couple of times, other times he just uses them meanwhile Namor is expected to drop everything to help his surface friends at any time. I love Steve a lot but even I can admit that Steve is often held up as the gold standard for Moral Compass characters, and more often than not things always end up in his favor or he is written to be "right" even when he isn't.
Steve has a very black and white view on things and like most other surface heroes he doesn't see disrespecting and infringing on Atlantean's rights/customs/justice as something that's a big deal but if the opposite happened then the Atlanteans would be villainized.
I think Steve and Namor were much closer in the olden days, during the war they were brothers, perhaps it was the closest either of them had to a brother in their lives at that point.
These days their loyalties often clash and it feels less like a true friendship than it does Steve feeling he has to be the responsible one when Namor is being "reckless". Steve ends up being very preachy to Namor and it's irritating to me because Namor is a king, he has responsibilities Steve doesn't. He can't afford to stick to human laws/morals because it could cost him the lives of his people.
So while I think they are still friends, it's different from when they were younger.
I just want to talk about classic comic characters a bit...
Classic Golden Age Marvel heroes like The Human Torch, Captain America, and Angel have such a distinct Steampunk/Film Noir aesthetic/air about them, their origin stories, and their their respective pockets of the Marvel Universe and it is one of the coolest things that I rarely see talked about/showcased that much. There’s just something almost uncanny about them but in a way that is intriguing. I’m not quite sure how to describe the feeling exactly, but if I had to do so using a song, it would be this one:
Anyway, I feel like the whole aesthetic of this era is criminally under-utilized now. It still has it’s place and appeal in modern comics as well. Would be cool to see more of it.
Also this style of art and color is just so so nice. I much prefer it to the shiny busy stuff we mostly get now. There’s something about the darker lines, and softer color that really just makes the bright heroes and abilities pop while still maintaining that air of dark mystique that communicates that weird stuff is going on here, but you just can’t put your finger on why exactly you feel that. This style manages to combine the best of both modern and classic comics in a way that sticks with the reader for a long time after they put the issue down. It doesn’t feel overly dramatic. You take it seriously because it takes itself seriously, but in a way that’s respectful and not over-the-top.
🦸♂️ Invaders and Wreck 🔱
I forgot about ayo and shuri! But my point still stands that bucky is still tied to whoever captain america is in a weird way
Here's me talking about the invaders at like 12 am last night
List of people i think steve rogers considers his family in the 616:
- Sharon carter: the love of his love
- Sam wilson: his longtime partner and best friend
- Bucky barnes: his former teenage sidekick
- The invaders (namely: namor, jim hammond, toro raymond): his team during ww2 that would take a bullet for him
- Nick fury: his superior officer during ww2 (they also have the same birthday)
- Ian rogers: his adopted son from another dimension
The Simplified Story of Bucky and Toro
@gegeru replied to your post
teach me senpai
ayt here’s the short version (not so short actually i got passionate lol)
So Bucky Barnes the TEENAGE sidekick to Steve Rogers known as Captain America & Toro Raymond the teenage sidekick to Jim Hammond the Human Torch
So Bucky and Toro met back in the summer of 1941. Steve often had alone missions (more dangerous, remember that Bucky was like 13 before all that got retconned) so he left Bucky to do speeches in front of the Sentinels of Liberty (which is like a political group but also a Captain America fan club). Bucky Meets four other boys with who he forms the Young Allies
Then Toro shows up (he was probably bored) and decides he’s the leader now. (Toro had been a sidekick longer than Bucky) Bucky doesn’t agree, they fight the Red Skull and become best of friends
Just think about the fact that Marvel’s first team-up series was a Bucky/Toro event
The U.S. entered WW2 a few months later. Toro and Bucky was part of the Invaders alongside Steve, Jim, Namor and other heroes that joined later (or were retconned as part of the team)
They were also part of the Kid Commandos, the junior division of the Invaders
The Young Allies were still a thing while they were at war, the other members having joined the military as well.
(if you’re an MCU fan, you may ask yourself where do the Howling Commandos fit in all this, and the answer is: nowhere, it was actually Nick Fury (now Sr)’s team (bucky and steve teamed up with them tho)
Which meant that unless Bucky was on a mission alone with Cap or being kidnapped cuz he liked rushing into things, Bucky spent most of his time with Toro.
Death and resurrection under the read more (there’s also a TL;DR)
Enjoy these Incorrect Invaders Quotes
Do you think it’s weird that they’ve brought basically all the invaders back to life but never utilize them? Like some of Steve and Bucky’s best friends are just floating around in the ether never being mentioned.
The Curse of Torch Family 😔 I don't find it weird, just sad and futile, it's tough being a Jim Hammond and Toro Raymond fan because the orginal Marvel Torches will always be shoved into the background or trotted out once every few years to be paraded about like: See? We have old heroes who fought in the war that aren't Steve!
Marvel honestly doesn't know what to do with the Invaders, they always feel like they have to set them back in WWll era when I think it would be a better choice to set them in modern times and have them fight Red Skull and Neo Nazis and showcase how the world didn't get rid of Nazis/Racism after WWll.
They also don't know what to do with The Torches either, Johnny Storm is The Human Torch, he will always have that title and Jim is considered the beta form of that hero role unfortunately. Toro was a sidekick before Bucky but even he is ignored. Marvel just has a limited imagination of trying to fit in two more similar powered heroes into stories. Which is why Toro and Jim were treated so terribly in the Invaders 2019 run. The last time they had anything good was with The Torch miniseries, which is excellent imo.
Also I still think Brian Falsworth is still dead. Marvel is really riding that "Bury your canon Gays" train to the end of the line (I'm not a mcu stucky fan, don't throw stones for me using that turn of phrase!) So not all the Invaders are back from the dead. However Jackie is rarely mentioned too.
Due to the movies Steve, and also Bucky, have such a big presence they overshadow the other Invaders even if they are all in the same book. Namor also overshadows them due to his personality, and in the last run Chip really pushed his Steve/Namor agenda.
I agree, and the thing is the Torches bring out the lighter side of the Invaders, Toro and Bucky have a strong friendship and bond that transcended death itself, Bucky literally brings his friend back from the dead because he missed him (this can also be read as a ship, but I’m just keeping to the comics themselves) and Namor literally said that Jim brings out the best in him, both Torches bring the heart to the team and without them the team doesn’t work imo.
It really all depends on whomever is in charge who wants to put the effort into writing a decent Invaders story.
Oh I absolutely agree with this 100%. And the thing is that while Steve and Namor are already well-established in this timeline and I can understand to some degree why some writers might feel like it’s hard to fit Jim into that, Bucky has burned so many bridges over the (comparatively) short time he’s been around and has lost enough or willingly let go of ties to the point that he is pretty much a lone agent that they can do whatever they want with. Is it really that hard to do a Heroes for Hire style team-up with him and Toro? Their dynamic is incredible and it wouldn’t be hard at all to make a whole new generation of comic book lovers fall in love with Toro, imo. And I get it, Toro doesn’t have unique powers, but that’s really just an excuse for a lack of creativity because no two people with the same skills will use them in the same way and creative use of powers can go a long way to differentiating him from the other Torches. The Torches do bring out the best in them, just as you said. When you have people as self important as Steve and Namor and a feral bucket of angst like Bucky, you need people who can soften out their edges and actually keep them together. And that’s exactly what the Torches do. But for some reason Marvel seems allergic to letting go of all that angst and miscommunication that fuels even more angst and I don’t know if this is another case of the MCU’s popularity bleeding into the comics, but I hate it and I really wish they would stop and actually allow these characters to develop already.
And yeah that is also something you bring up that always bothered me. Bucky (granted, teen Bucky, but my point still stands) was the one who used the cosmic cube to bring Toro back to life in the current timeline. He had ample opportunity to save himself from a terrible fate he knew was coming for him or literally anything else and yet he used the single second he held the cube in his hand to bring Toro back to life. If that doesn’t scream “these two are hella important to each other and it would make literally no sense under these circumstances to keep them separated in the current timeline” then I don’t know what does, but then everyone else at Marvel seems to have shoved their fingers in their ears over the whole thing.
Anyway, sorry for reply-ranting on your post here but this is something that has bothered me for a long time.
You're so right!!! Like I don't keep up with Steve and Bucky's comics very well, but in the few scenes Bucky and Toro were together in the modern era you can see how they click, how they work so well. Bucky has been through so much and out of all the Invaders after the war, Toro was the only one who made it and had a life after, he knows how to move on and could teach Bucky to do the same. Not to mention how they were very close during their teen years.
Like things were going ok with Toro and Bucky until they went and made Toro an Inhuman then dropped him off the face of the earth. We see nothing about him until Invaders 2019 and then the two don't even have ONE SCENE together past or present?! Ridiculous.
I liked Chip's writing but you could really tell he was writing the Steve and Namor show, not the Invaders.
