how do you feel about Rey technically being the chosen one and not Anakin, because in the end she was the one to finally kill palpatine and end the sith.
I don’t think Rey being a Chosen One–if she is that, if being the Chosen One is tied specifically (and only?) to bringing balance to the Force–negates that Anakin is and always has been the Chosen One.Look at what Anakin says in The Rise of Skywalker: “Bring back the balance, Rey, as I did.”He’s specifically reaffirming that he did bring balance within the context of the movie. But it also fits with what JJ has said is one of the themes of the movie:
“The idea that balance brought to the Force doesn’t mean it’s forever.”Anakin did his job (even if he screwed it up for a long time), he left the galaxy in a state of balance. But the thing that made it go out of balance–And I’ve always believed that it was the state of the larger galaxy, as everyone is part of the Force, the Force creates life and is created by life, it is life and death and rebirth, so of course it’s not just down to those who are Force-Sensitive, but literally every person in the galaxy. “Mom, you say the biggest problem in this universe is nobody helps each other.” –Anakin Skywalker, The Phantom Menace–And the point of the ST–including supplementary material, as well as being an incredibly salient point in our currently political atmosphere–is that the generation that follows those who the previous still have work to do and always will, if they ignore that, then things go out of balance again and a new Chosen One is needed. That’s why the line of “It’s just… people.” who showed up to fight the Final Order hit so hard for me, because the galaxy finally, finally stepped up again. The Jedi can only do so much, they can only make a moment or be a focal point or be an inspiration, they cannot do the entirety of the lifting. It has to be everyone, it has to be the entire general public. That’s what really failed in the Republic, that the general public wouldn’t stand up. That’s what failed for so long with the Empire, the general public wouldn’t stand up. That’s what led to the First Order, the general public wouldn’t stand up. (Oh, there are extenuating and complicated circumstances, I don’t say this without empathy! I’m not condemning people for being scared, for feeling like they couldn’t make a difference, for realizing they would die if they stood up and just trying to survive, but ultimately I think that’s where the lack of balance came from.)–the thing that made the galaxy go out of balance was that people stopped working at it. They didn’t show up in TLJ. They ignored the warning signs of the First Order. They didn’t want to fight or even hear about another war after the Galactic Civil War. And, thus, balance was lost. So, Rey was needed in her time.Just as Anakin was needed in his time. They were both the Chosen One, via the canon of the film and word of god commentary, and it’s one of my favorite things about The Rise of Skywalker!
