“In our darkest moment”, an Encanto fic

Some days ago, I was talking a bit about Bruno’s backstory in this post, and how it would’ve been better if the movie had focused on his own struggles, instead on reduce his departure to “I hid to protect Mirabel”. I like to think he hid to protect the whole family, because his last vision could have triggered the destruction of Casita (as it does indeed in the movie). There’s more, of course; with these fics I’ve been writing lately, I’ve tried to set up a more complex scenario for that fateful night of Mirabel’s ceremony and fleshed out the family’s problems, while also respecting the canon. In this one about this turning point in Casa Madrigal, there’s no big arguments, just fear and tension, and Alma begging for a vision. But you know how the opening scene of the movie is a light version of Dos Oruguitas? Well, this is the dos oruguitas version of Bruno’s flashback in the movie 8D

I’ve put a lot of love in it, so I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it :)

Title: In our darkest moment Characters: the triplets, Alma, and the whole family. Word Count: 12.572 Rating: G Warnings/Spoilers: none, if you’ve watched the movie. This one ties with my previous ones, so you can find them here, if you don’t know them and want to check them first. Since this night was actually one of the darkest moments of the family, this fic is SAD, you’re warned. Summary: The triplets knew perfectly the story of the miracle’s origin. But even so, Bruno had wondered many times how would it be to live through something so extreme. Losing everything in a blink, turning around and discovering your life had radically changed forever in a matter of seconds. It was something that had given him nightmares when he was younger, and he had concluded he didn’t want to fully understand it. It was too much. The night Mirabel didn’t get her gift, however, he had no choice but to finally understand.

“I’ll do anything for you”, an Encanto fic

Finally, I have put down one of the first fic ideas I had in December: the night Bruno left and what role Dolores played in it. This is the fic actually inspired in this old post, though I’ve added a lot of things and fleshed out the events with all the details I’ve been writing about over these months. The final result isn’t exactly what I had in mind at first, but I seized the moment to talk about something more important for me: how even the people who love you the most and care of you the most can also destroy your life with well-meaning decisions that go terribly wrong. And yes, I’m talking about how Bruno’s decision affected Dolores. Because trauma doesn’t have to be always born from abuse; a 40 years old uncle asking for the help of his 12 years old niece about a very difficult issue can also be traumatic af.

Besides, I really think there’s something worse than Bruno running away alone in the middle of the night without a word. And that’s Bruno running away in the middle of the night with Dolores’s help.

Hope you enjoy this one as much as I enjoyed writing it :)

Title: I’ll do anything for you Characters: Dolores and Bruno, and the rest of the family Word Count: 11.800 Rating: G Warnings/Spoilers: none, if you’ve watched the movie. This one is a direct continuation/complement to In our darkest moment, also set on the night of Mira’s ceremony but from Dolores PoV to cover what wasn’t treated in the previous one, so knowing it is quite necessary. It has also constant references to the rest of the series (The life of her dreams and And everyone always assumes the worst; I recommend especially the latter for a better understanding of the relationship I hc between Bruno a Loli, btw), because this is the turning point of the whole thing. Again, this is SAD, but… in a different way. Summary: Dolores was more used to the drawbacks of her gift than to its perks. Since the moment she had turned five, she had been blessed with a significant amount of knowledge, but knowing a lot of things didn’t mean she knew what to do with them— or that she could even do something at all. Most of the times, she was compelled to play ignorance, as if she couldn’t hear the hard words, scolding, arguments, subtle crying, soft apologies, mumbled prayers, tired sighs or wordless silences. Those were things kids shouldn’t know, so she was expected to do nothing about them, just to keep quiet and step aside. The night Mirabel didn’t get her gift, however, too many things changed forever. And when she heard tío Bruno crumbling in his room, as much as the very walls of the tower, she decided it was time to step forward.
