The Jedi Code and Obi-Wan Kenobi

You know what I love about that moment Obi-Wan said “Then my friend is truly dead,” and “Goodbye, Darth,”?

The final episode of Obi-Wan Kenobi is entirely about love. Obi-Wan leaves Leia and the ship of refugees because to him, they are more important. He finds the strength to break free of what would have been a stony tomb because he remembered Leia, and Luke, and Anakin, and how he loved all of them.

He wept as he spoke to Anakin because he loves him still.

But, as he said “Goodbye, Darth,” he let Anakin go.

He still loved Anakin more than anything. But Obi-Wan let Anakin go, because to hold on to him, to be attached in such a way that his life would still be centered on the memory of his brother, would be to burn with him. And he chose to love - to love Leia and Luke, Anakin’s living memory.

He was never truer to the Jedi and to the Force than he was in that moment. To love utterly selflessly and utterly determinedly, but without attachment.

What a beautiful thing it is, to choose to love the living without allowing the ghosts of the dead to cling to you.

What a glorious thing, to be a Jedi.

There's a panel in Star Wars 17 where Vader tells Luke "Your strength in the Force has grown since last we met" and Luke corrects him "My connection to the Force, Vader," and this is interesting for what it says about the difference between Sith and Jedi philosophies but it's also an interesting character note that Luke feels compelled to be pedantic even in the middle of a goddamn firefight.

sometimes star wars is unsubtle in a bad way and sometimes luke skywalker is dragging his father’s dead weight across the death star floor, sobbing from love and exhaustion

Then after Anakin sees him with his true eyes for the first time in 23 years and Luke is crying because he knows his father has been trapped in his armor and the first thing he ears and sees is another battleground.

Anakin tells him to leave him behind and save himself because he wants Luke to be safe and he is dying anyway and Luke won´t because he promised himself and his Dad he wasn´t going to abandone his father ever :(

saw someone describe Luke Skywalker as the 'bastard son of a sith lord' and i have to say i think Darth Vader would be VERY offended by that. like how DARE you imply Padme wasn't his wife??

I don't think it's fair to call him a deadbeat either. like the man started trying to have a relationship with his son as soon as he found out he existed. he was trying so so hard to have a father son relationship. yes he tortured his son's friends and yes he did also maim him but that's not important right now.

I think it’s absolutely the greatest fact in star wars that everyone who has given it more than two milliseconds of thought has immediately found obi wan during his stay on tatooine with like. pretty minimal effort, all things considered. ezra, maul, bail organa, just to name a few. which I think proves how absolutely hysterical it is that anakin never found him, like my man you have literally the entire imperial army and half the galaxy at your disposal, ultra enhanced force abilities, and years of military training and experience, and the guy literally didn’t even look on his own home planet. I’m sorry but I will never get over it

The Star Wars Original Trilogy is peak fiction because they took a fairy tale and set it in space, then they gave the princess in distress a GUN. But even better they gave her a sharp tongue and the power of revolution. They made the “dragon” a depressed cyborg father with asthma who doesn’t understand his own emotions and does murders because of it. And they made the knight a blond Barbie boy who attempts to solve problems with the power of love like he’s Sailor Moon or something.

And then they said, “oh yeah they’re all related btw. All the galaxy’s problems are this one family’s fault. Hope this helps 😘”

Jesus imagine how much officers and Imperial guards must hate it when the Emperor gives any command that doesn’t involve an explicit or implicit exception for Vader. Like, the Emperor is like “I am not to be disturbed for ANY reason” and the staff spend the rest of their shifts sweating and hoping that Vader doesn’t show up because if he does he’s definitely going to answer their denial by silently throttling them without touching them. And you can tell the guards are just raising their weapons for show, because really what are they gonna do? They’re two jackasses with pikes.

this has not stopped being funny. that guy just narrowly avoided death and he has to keep standing there in front of Vader. “Very good,” he says, like this is a normal exchange with somebody who was not just a second ago 100% going to murder him. he’s such a nightmare

I love Vader’s “my bad” hand gesture afterwards

Doomsday is close at hand I'll book the marching band To play as you speak

I'll feel like throwin' up You'll sit and stare Like a goddamn machine

I’d like to plan out my part in this But you’re such a narcissist You'll probably do it next week I don’t get a choice in the matter Why would I? It's only the death of me Only the death of me

Pull the plug, but be carеful I don't wanna die too soon I think there's good in you somewhere I’ll hang on 'til the chaos is through

Doomsday is close at hand I'll book the marching band To play as you speak

I'll feel like throwin' up You'll sit and stare Like a goddamn machine

The death of me was so quiet No friends and family allowed Only my murderer, you, and the priest Who told you to go to Hell

And the funny thing is I would've married you If you'd have stuck around

Doomsday is close at hand I booked the marching band To play as you speak

I feel like throwin' up You sit and stare Like a goddamn machine

In light of the recent interviews that brought up again the controversial "somehow Palpatine returned"...

Return of the Jedi showed Palpatine's downfall as a consequence of his arrogance. Because even the most strategic player, after achieving significant success, eventually overplays his hand. Believing he could easily undermine a father-son bond in the same way he distrupted and exploited Vader's friendships, marriage and entire systems, is simply the overreach of someone who has started perceiving themselves as omnipotent. Palpatine's expectation of Luke to submit to his will without any proper build up, crucial in grooming his father, is the pinnacle of his delusions of grandeur. This perception is reinforced by Vader's decades of passivity under Palpatine's command, consumed by hatred and lacking any purpose beyond inflicting suffering on others, which makes Palpatine directly attempt to kill Luke in front of him without thinking of consequences.

That said "somehow Palpatine returned" ultimately doesn't fit well with the narrative explained above. Palpatine is fundamentally intended to be the antagonist of Anakin's tragedy, making it customary for his ultimate demise to come at the hands of the individual whose entire existence has been ravaged by his schemes, to preserve the last remaining piece of his family.

Return of the Jedi illustrated this by making Anakin the final decider of everyone's fate in the final twist, not Luke, who was the hero. That was Anakin's demon to defeat. This is why I believe Palpatine should have been omitted from the sequel trilogy. Not only to prevent leaving a bitter taste over the resolution of Episode 6 but also because the sequels needed to establish their own villains.

I honestly never thought anyone could outdo Anakin-’you-underestimate-my-powers’-does-a-triple-backflip-and-gets-all-his-limbs-cut-off-Skywalker in being Extra™ but creating a bucket of your enemies ashes to angrily slam your completely unnecessary helmet into in front of prisoner company just for the villain aesthetic comes pretty damn close

I’m sorry but nothing will compare to Darth-i-have-to-make-the-most-extra-supervillain-entrance-standing-on-a-tie-fighter-with-a-cool-cape-aesthetic-while-flying-the-damn-tie-fighter-with-the-force-because-i’m-cool-Vader

Yeah, you’re right. The only person who can out Extra™ Anakin is Anakin
