Dadneto is getting more cringe every other day.
Seriously the AXIS retcon and Marvel’s obsession to make Magnus family still a thing leads to all kinds of shit writing.(Not really in this particular case but still I don’t like the word used here.) I don’t mind Joseph’s writing here but seriously calling Magneto that is weird.
Because they lose the bloodties, now Marvel needs other justifications to still sell them as a family. To the point they need to conjure none-existent family affections for them(cough Trial of Magneto where Wanda acted like a timid teenage girl).
Let’s call Magneto Wanda’s adoptive father even though dude never raised her, unless you count being a shitty ex-boss as being a parent. Not to mention she actually had adoptive parents, you know the ones where the Maximoff name came from? Django who stared down the face of an Elder God and saved his daughter, and Marya who is actually still alive in Robinson’s Scarlet Witch run. But let’s make Erik and Wanda play wholesome daddy and his little girl and pretend they had this nice family relationship and quietly erase those who actually loved and cared for the twins because Magneto is the far more popular character right? Why don’t we replace Uncle Ben with Tony Stark while we are at it?
Can we just restore the blood ties and make them estranged biological family again? I like Wanda better when she took her allegiance and affection seriously.
And as much as I love Wanda for being a sentimental person, writers’ constant mishandling of her family relationship just makes me wish she is more of a stonehearted bitch who doesn’t give a damn.
Preach haha! Even the new uncanny avengers has a line about Pietro not getting the chance to reconcile with Magneto and it’s like WTF- Magneto murdered his son, was willing to let Wanda be murdered, neglected and used Lorna as a battery and was expressly physically and mentally abusive to the twins when they were teenagers (he tried to pimp Wanda out to Namor as well if I recall).
The Magnet family is absolutely fascinating and the retcon should be undone but that only works with the blood ties and not this adoptive family angle - it also pushes out Pietro cause there is no way writers can make the adoptive family angle work.
Erik was also happy to let his children take the full blame for House of M and have Wanda mocked as the pretender when he and the other avengers/X-Men had there roles to play in the House of M debacle - I stand by Wanda and Pietro being victims of the whole mess as well.
Marvel will just get more respect if they undo the retcon and admit it was a mistake. I really enjoy all these characters but I hate marvel trying to have it’s cake and eat it too.
Having them as a happy family is fine in fannon but doesn’t work in cannon (found family works less so)- frankly it makes the characters less interesting and complex.
Having victims of abuse be the ones to forgive and to work to reconcile with their abuser when said person doesn’t have to make effort for forgiveness is unfortunate and it erases Magda, Django and Marya - all Romani characters who deserved better.
We don’t need to make Magneto a good dad or a flawlessly good person - that’s not why people like him.
Have to ask, everyone here agrees their relationship was just the worst, so why have any connection at all? We went years without the twins having any form of communication with him, and it was fine for them. Pietro calmed down a little, just focused on being an Avenger and going on some dates. Just made every day a me day. The only flaw was no him bonding with Luna. Wanda was curious on who their parents were and discovered a strong magic line (also expanding Marvel’s magic side), along with still some unanswered questions to explore later. The best as put by OP found out her step-mom Marya is alive. Yet Wanda’s family dinner excluded her and Luna. What about Magneto and as well Polaris, well they just found out their family got a whole lot smaller and bonded. It also came out good. To many people are angry at the retcon, coming off almost hypocritical as him being their father was a retcon. One day Magneto wasn’t their father, then he finds a talking cow who tells him they are his children. Truly this was set up in a compelling story and that’s why the twins didn’t have a previous retcon on who their parents were.
Hey, since you reblogged from me I feel the need to hop in and say that yes their dynamic was a mess and THAT’S why we liked it, we want them to have a connection because it gives for amazing stories that explore these characters lives, conflicts, traumas and development.
I respect your opinion but I think them having a difficult relationship was one of the most interesting things that could happen to their characters and the retcon ruined it.
I don’t see how it is hypocrisy to be mad at the retcon just because Magneto being their dad was also a retcon, it was one that made sense and opened the door for several interesting storylines that marked these characters deeply.
As a Quicksilver fan especially I love the dynamic between Pietro and Erik, it was so important for his character, to explore what it meant to be linked to a man that hurt him so much and that has such a different world-view from him, it’s powerful to see Pietro stand firmly in his convictions against Magneto despite their blood bond. There’s some strong angst in their relationship that I loved to read and now it’s all gone.
Also there was zero reason for Marvel to need a retcon in order to write Lorna and Erik interacting, that was just them being shitty and deciding to use Lorna only when they didn’t have more choices.
The retcon and the current “found family” angle aren’t disliked because the fans want to see these characters being a perfect blood related family, we want them to be a blood related mess that is entertaining to read and Marvel took that away from us.
I would be more eloquent if I wasn’t tired but that’s basically it, I want them to be a family like they used to be because I like drama.
Well said! The examples given by xkeyon are also stuff that didn’t need the retcon to happen and just cause something was a retcon before doesn’t necessarily mean it’s hypocritical not to like a further retcon. Nothing was stopping Lorna and Magneto bonding, Wanda could have still embarked on the witches road, run into Marya (who hasn’t been mentioned since) and we could have learned that Magda’s families were the previous scarlet witches. Stories exploring the twins Romani heritage like Quicksilver no surrender and the events leading up to it still could have happened.
The retcon of making magneto their father was a well thought out one built up over a few years and worked so perfectly with previous cannon. The retcon removing those ties was a spiteful move motivated by rights issues with no planning- marvel itself ignores it any chance it gets except for some reason undoing it entirely when it’s clear many of it’s writers would like that. It also cheapens the impact of stories like Dissembled, house of M and children’s cruisade - some super pivotal stories for the marvel universe as a whole with house of M being one of the most iconic marvel stories of all time and it doesn’t hit the same with the knowledge the twins were never Magneto’s children and mutants. It also makes Wanda’s iconic line have even more unfortunate implications.
I mean Magneto looses his family and it turns out that he had family all along in the two he recruited and abused as vulnerable children. The twins in a beautiful moment of unity and their growth from their difficult childhoods are ready for a new chapter with the birth of Luna and then their abuser walks in and declares himself their father. How to people on opposite ends of the fight reconcile their relationship - it’s all super facinating stuff with so much story potential - in contrast what did the second retcon do- it didn’t help any of those characters.
This family is enjoyed because it is a mess and that messy dynamic takes the time to explore the characters in a neauance. Yes a happy family is fun in fannon but for this particular family that is not the cannon case and a fluffy happy family in this medium would be boring.
What is hypocritical is marvels current move of refusing it made a mistake and undoing the retcon no one wanted while trying to push for a fluffy happy family angle which is contrary to why people loved this family and glorifies magneto at the expense of the children he hurt (or push some of those kids out of the picture entirely). Lorna and Wanda’s relationship and any to Mags to his kids isn’t earned and we could have gotten actual stories of them trying to work things out but nope- they’re just a happy family now which they never were before.
