How bad was the relationship between polaris and Alex
It's more about how writers constantly used Lorna for Alex writing that makes me upset. Their relationship was not great imo but @salarta is the Polaris expert and I enjoy reading their posts about it so they might be able to help explain it better.
I too have strong feelings against Alex and Lorna's relationship from the 616 Universe. I just don't have the receipts ready to go like @salarta does.
I can say that repeatedly throughout their relationship, Alex is written as the lead, the smart, cool and calm one .. Where Lorna is written as if she can't live without him in a massively Co-dependent way. In no particular order, this is what I remember, without scans.
-She holds onto his suit in her closet when she thinks he's dead and refuses to accept that he's dead and gone. And freaks out when it's stolen.
-on Genosha with Magneto she only leaves him and stops helping him with the line "I only had to think what Alex would do," *eye rolls*
-She's written the whole time as the "crazy" ex girlfriend when the whole wedding arc happens. (Alex doesn't propose, she just tells everyone and then is written as crazy AF when he leaves her for Nurse Annie--at the fucking altar)
-She is tortured in space to give him man pain. It's entirely framed to be that way.
-She is constantly talked down to him as if she's unstable/mentally unsound and can't be trusted. He even gets Pietro to spy on her when she's leading All New X-Factor (Thank you Pietro for calling that out)
-She needs to be saved in the early comics repeatedly and cannot function without him.
-When she's mind controlled by Malice, rather then trying to help his girlfriend Alex hooks up with Madelyne Pryor, after Scott and her had broken up
There's more but seriously, I can't remember details.
SERIOUSLY let Lorna hook up with someone else. Anyone else. Please.
... There are so many more hot guys or gals out there in the comics. Many that drink respect women juice.
Hey party people.
Going to start off with just posting receipts. (I literally have folders dedicated to calling this out; one is called 'havok post' and the other is called 'havok garbage').
These are in no particular order.
Tumblr only allows 10 images, so that's all I can post.
If you look at their character histories, Havok is always given opportunities. He's always given other relationships. Every decade, he's with someone new or has someone new interested in him. Madelyne Pryor, Wasp, Wolfsbane, Nurse Annie.
Lorna has only ever been with Havok. Iceman was part of a love triangle with Lorna and Havok back in the very beginning, but that never became a full-fledged relationship. (Not to mention Marvel's gone out of its way this past decade to keep Lorna away from Iceman, instead of letting her be the cool ally she's supposed to be). There was minor flirtation between Lorna and Gambit on ANXF that never became an actual relationship. And if you really stretch the definition, Random was obsessed with Lorna for about one issue in the 90s. And that's it. That's all Lorna's ever had.
Marvel would like people to perceive Lorna only ever dating Havok as devotion, but the reality is they've never once thought about Lorna and what's best for her in this regard. When she's written in relationship with Havok, she's not treated like an equal and respected partner with her own thoughts, feelings, interests, philosophies, drives, etc. She's treated like Havok's convenient status booster and supporting character meant to build him up and advance his career. What's good for Lorna and what she actually wants never factor into the picture. And the bold bottom line truth is that under current conditions, even if Marvel forcing Havok on Lorna again somehow managed to not suck at the start, falling into that sinkhole of suck would be inevitable. All it takes is a writer looking at shitty past work and trying to "honor" it.
Like seriously All New X-Factor was one of the best recent Marvel comics ever. It had Lorna being such a bad ass and a leader, it had Remy and his cats, it had Pietro trying to be better and progressing as a character. The Lorna and Pietro moments alone would have been worth the whole book. Each character got time and development in such a short run. And we finally had Luna and Pietro reunited! Even Doug, Warlock, Danger, and Georgia were good and it’s such a shame that Marvel canceled it. They had potential to be a great series and I’m still mad at Marvel.
I had some stuff I wanted to say with another post but lost interest during reblog. Regained interest here, so gonna say it with this reblog.
I had mixed feelings about ANXF, and still do. By the end, I was supportive of it. It gave her a chance to lead a team of her own, it let her spend time with her brother Pietro and eventually her sister Wanda, and it had some small teases of potential Polaris x Gambit romance.
However, if I had been asked at ANXF #6, I would’ve said it needed to be canceled ASAP. At that point, her character history (esp. with other writers) was being ignored, and she was getting treated more and more like a “leader in name only” on a team actually being led by Gambit. It was starting with ANXF #7 that my view of the book started to slowly turn around.
There were still other problems that existed even during the good spots. Peter David’s opposition to Magneto meant he was barring Lorna from exploring an essential relationship. Peter David’s resistance to “his characters” being involved in broader Marvel/X-Men events meant Marvel had a good excuse to exclude her from things like Axis, or for Bunn to not get to use her until she was off ANXF. Peter David’s preference for team costumes over her iconic costume meant Lorna was less recognizable to casual readers, hurting sales.
Those were problems that either I thought were not dealbreakers (leadership + good reason for team costume = begrudgingly okay) or might be rectified via feedback down the line in the same way the problems from ANXF #3-6 were fixed.
A good chunk of why I’m more vocal about ANXF’s cancellation than I’d normally be for something I have mixed feelings on is Marvel’s treatment of it.
Marvel didn’t promote it. Marvel deliberately sabotaged ANXF #14, the issue where Lorna and Wanda spend time together as sisters, while trying to trick people with the Axis variant cover with Wanda alongside an Enchantress tinted to look more like Lorna. In the end, Marvel canceled ANXF “due to low sales,” yet the Scarlet Witch solo had those same low sales starting with issue #2 despite tons of promotion and Marvel kept that going for over a year.
There were many things to Marvel’s treatment of ANXF that told me they didn’t really want it to succeed or sell, they were just putting on appearances. For reasons related to Peter David at that time, but also to be able to persist in a lie Marvel’s higher-ups have that Polaris isn’t a viable character. Certain higher-ups at Marvel think of Lorna as a nobody D-list or Z-list character who doesn’t deserve much use or attention. A team book led by Polaris “failing due to low sales” gives them the ability to stroke their own egos and claim they were right all along.
Of course, that they kept feeling the need to undermine and sabotage ANXF rather than promote it demonstrates that those same higher-ups didn’t really believe their own lies. Otherwise, they would’ve felt comfortable giving the book its best shot and knowing they’d be proven right.
I agree that every comic has it’s share of problems but as you said Marvel didn’t promote that comic and I think a reason why was because they wanted it to fail. Quicksilver was just about to hit the big screen yet Peter David who is known for writing a good Pietro wanted him in the book. Marvel I think had to give it to him but they wanted Pietro back to shove him into being the token speedster/background character for the Avengers.
However the highlights of the book were for the first time in years we got Lorna and Pietro acting like siblings, Alex being told to shove off and Lorna was not taking any crap from anyone. Focus shifted to Remy as the lead male after Pietro left that being said Lorna was still the lead female and got more development of her trying to be a leader that she thought she should be and not fall into being a leader like Alex Summers.
We didn’t get much with Magneto or Lorna’s backstory and I was okish with that because whenever Erik shows up suddenly it’s all about him and I wanted the focus to stay on the team. We never got a chance to see where Lorna’s story would lead because it got cancelled.
Marvel has always treated Erik, Wanda, and Billy with better (or in the scarlet witch mini at least longer if not better) comics, while sidelining Pietro, Lorna, and Tommy.
They constantly shove Pietro into the role of overprotective sociopath. They constantly cut Lorna out. Where is Tommy? He is a twin to Billy yet completely absent for the last few years. Luna has been ignored for so long that I’m surprised Marvel still remembers her.
Still ANXF never got the chance to see where each character would end up because of higher ups meddling with it. It was still a far better comic than the stuff we get today especially with the retcon.

Sometimes please insert that waitingforthet comic where Magneto tells Havok "I never thought you were good enough for Lorna."
Encouragement to not read Hellions during Hellfire Gala if you’re a Lorna fan, due to what’s seen in this preview.
I’ve preordered it but I can just imagine it’s gonna be some bullshit of Magneto going “Stay away from my daughter…”
I knew this was coming gahhhhhhhh.
Thanks I hate it. Also why have Lorna just got white eyes????
