Lorna was magnetos protégé before she was his daughter and that’s such a fundamental part of their relationship that I feel is lost in the fandom interpretation of their dynamic.
For all his many mistakes with the twins magneto didn’t abandon them, if anything he literally took them in and kept trying to be part of their lives and they’re trauma bonded to him through the similar tragedies all three of them lived through. Lorna is the child he actually abandoned, he knew since she was a child she was his and where she was but he made the deliberate choice not to claim her until she was ready for his crusade, which if we’re being generous was his own way of protecting her but it shows how he will never put his children above his mission and ego.
Lorna spent a lot of her pre 90s era unsure of her place and powers, which is what motivated her to seek magneto out in the 90s. Unlike Pietro who was only on Genosha because he was being emotionally blackmailed by magneto, Lorna was there because she wanted to be, largely because she believed it would help her better understand herself, and that’s where she began her tutelage under him. However, even after mentoring her he still didn’t claim her. For all their estrangement magneto lauded Pietro around like a prince on Genosha and always claimed him, Wanda didn’t even help Genosha and she was still given the royal welcome as his daughter, where as Lorna actually did work on Genosha, trained under him and was significantly less hostile then her brother but that STILL wasn’t enough for magneto to tell her the truth and publicly claim her as his child. In fact it wasn’t until Lorna survived a genocide that he finally accepts her as his daughter despite knowing she was his this entire time because that man is incapable of bonding with his own children through anything else but the suffering that defined his own childhood.
Spot on!
I am very much a Lorna is the neglected child truther.
That for as bad as Magneto's relationship with the twins, Pietro especially, there is a possessiveness and attachment to them.
They take up his energy and attention but it's not necessary good attention.
Being ignored by Magneto is beneficial to Lorna ultimately.
But that neglect has still hurt her and isolated her.
I can't help but think about the way Magneto views all his kids. Wanda is the child he seemingly loves the most, he coddles her, he doesn't place any expectations on her but he also infantalises and seeks to isolate her. He undermines her decision and views an ideal version of her based on Magda and Anya and not herself. But like OP says we actually don't see loads of this love and affection -gentleness towards Wanda - until she lost her own children, until what happened in disassembled and HoM when she called him out and gave him a taste of his own medicine. Magneto can only bond with his children through tragedy. Before that he tried to bond with the twins, Pietro in particular, often because of the shared tragedies in their lives. Magneto however is a man of his time to some degree which makes being gentle for his daughters easier than with his son.
Lorna is ignored until he needs someone to take over his legacy, the twins are not an option or both. This neglect has both benefitted and hurt her. The pressures he put on her have been difficult and contributed negatively to her mental health. And again Magneto only bonds with her when she experiences a tragedy. I think about that panel from the Leah Williams Xfactor series where Magneto is unable to say who Lorna is as a person and what her personality is. I'm sure he would have done a better job had one of the twins asked him that - though I think both twins have always had a stronger sense of self or knowing who they were than Lorna, even as they struggle to untangle themselves from their twin. Poor Lorna is in many ways figuring it out (but she doesn't lack personality)
Pietro was the one that Magneto moulded in his self image and then the receptical for his self projection and hatred. However in his own wired way Magneto does try to make his son what he things will result in a better version of himself (Magneto) but he can only do so through tough love, he doesn't know how to be gentle with him son the way he can be on occasion with his daughters.
Unless you are one of Magnetos grandchildren (who are protected by Wanda and Pietro from Magneto respectively) Magneto is not able to love them in a way that goes beyond his goal and that is the tragedy.
I think about this family a lot the dynamic is so good.
