we're running out of scenarios I fear
2024 is a terrible year to be a henchman. The word "minion" is barely usable and you can't even say "goon" anymore.
so many people are lament that 'peeta will never be the same again' after his hijacking.
but i feel like that is only because katniss views peeta as this perfect, unchanged figure throughout the first two books.
the type of person who could never be changed by the games.
but readers, just like katniss, forget that peeta couldn't fit into his old roles after the games. because he had changed. just like katniss.
he was no longer a star on the wrestling team. he was no longer the baker's son who would greet everyone in the morning from the bakery's steps.
instead, he was a boy who limped into town to see his family once a week for dinner. a boy whose eyes adorn bags because he can't get a good night's sleep. a boy whose biggest fear is losing his lover. so much he is ready to die for her.
and so, the whole point of peeta's character in mockingjay is that he is not a new, 'mutt' version of himself. or even a post-mutt version. he simply is peeta, a teenager who has gone through hell and back. and forgive him if that changed him a little.
and yet, everyone is still convinced by katniss's "he's changed" instead of focusing on johanna *and suzanne's* point that "everyone has" (mj, 205).
"Shoulder" by big thief is such a zuko coded song,
"And the blood of the man who killed my mother with his hands, Is in me"
I know that zukos mum is not canonically dead as per the comics but as much as I love him I can't let zuko have a happy life,
And also because i have a fic idea of a few years after the war ends and ursas body is found buried in the courtyard,
Sorry but the Haymitch's dynamic with his final two tributes. will never not fuck me up.
Katniss: He hates hates hates her for being the same as him. He can communicate with her because she is the same as him. He's her mentor, of course he cares about her. He should be a father figure to her but he's too stunted by his own trauma so they exist like teenage allies in the never-ending arena which is a victor's life. He wants to keep her safe but she must also be a pawn in the rebellion. She makes him make promises he cannot keep. She is all that he could have been and he is all that she might be.
Peeta: The sacrificial lamb. The one Haymitch knows he can't keep. The boy who is better than the rest but must be condemned to die time and time again. Who demands that Haymitch saves Katniss, as Katniss demands that he saves Peeta, but Haymitch could not save Maysilee, or his family, or his girl. Everyone Haymitch has ever lost compressed into a single body and placed beside Katniss, so he is forced to look at her as his mirror.

headcanon that percy is historically hard to beat at monopoly. and it's intially the most mind-boggling thing ever watching him turn the tide of a game. because he's definitely losing at the beginning. but percy is not only an amazing strategist. he has a deep understanding of money and knows how and when to bet on the board. he knows when to test his luck. and he's amazing at getting into people's head.
Loving how this whole bit is built on the pun of "turn the tide". Really pulls it all together.
"jason is a knockoff watered down percy" NO hear me out, jason actually parallels annabeth immensely, sharing SO many similarities with her personality, not percy, in this essay I will-
