A writer friend told me something that broke my heart a little bit today; they're going to quit publishing their fanfic.

My instant thought was that they had been trolled or attacked or that something terrible had happened in their life because this person is so passionate about their writing. It wasn't any of that. Engagement with their works has been going down, as it has for many of us. Comments are like gold dust a lot of the time, and just looking through the historical comment counts on old fics on ao3 demonstrates this trend very clearly. It was not simply the comments dropping off which caused them to decide to stop posting, however.

My friend came across a discord server for their fandom (I should point out here that their fandom interest and mine diverged a couple of years ago, we stay in touch but don't currently read each other's posts because I'm not into their fandom and they would rather gouge their eyes out with a wooden spoon than read anything Star Wars) and specifically to share fic in that fandom. They joined, because we all love a good fic rec, only to discover that their latest multichapter fic, which has almost no comments and very few kudos, is being hotly discussed in this server as one of the best stories ever. Not one of these people has bothered to say this to them on the fic. When they asked, none of participants could see the point in telling the author of the fic they apparently loved so much that they love it.

This discovery has absolutely destroyed my friend's love of sharing fic. They share because they love seeing other people's enjoyment, and fic writers do that through comments and kudos/reblogs/likes because we don't get paid. There is no literary critic writing a blog post/article about how amazing the story is for us to copy and keep/frame. There is no money from royalties. All we have are the words of the people reading our works.

Those people on that server could have taken five minutes of the time they spent gushing about how amazing my friend's story was to other people and used it to tell the one person guaranteed to want to hear that praise how much they loved it. They could have taken a moment to express their opinion to the person who spent hours upon hours plotting, writing, editing, and posting those chapters. Instead, they deprived my friend of thing that keeps them sharing their writing, and in the process have killed their love of it. My friend now feels used and unmotivated.

I won't be sharing a link to their fic, they said I could share their experience but not their identity. I know they plan to post one final chapter. I know they intend to express their hurt at being excluded from the praise for the thing they created, and I know they intend to announce that as a consequence they will not be posting for a long while, if at all.

So please, I beg you, don't hide your love of a story from the writer. It's just about the only thing we have.

Here I thought it was just me seeing the decline, oof. I've been all over the place with ship and fandom, so I chalked it up to that.

If I write just for the joy of creating, I think people don't realize that I can also just keep it to myself. I don't need to share, and neither does anyone else. What's the point of a creative community if you won't support the people who make it happen? C'mon, people.

this happens all the time to art and i do wonder about the thinking behind it too.

if you really enjoyed eg a fic and then didn't comment, would you mind sharing your reason/s why?

'i'm shy' and 'i don't think my comment is worthwhile' are reasons i see most often.

what then would make you more likely to comment and share your joy with a creator?

You know what? I believe that you can finish your writing project. I believe you can update your fic. I believe you can work on your WIP. I don't care if you think it's cringy or bad. I don't care if we've never met or interacted in our whole lives. I believe in you. Keep going - you've got this.

I just wanted to reach out and say how much I absolutely love Stubborn Love. It’s one of my favorite stories, and I’m so grateful for all the time and effort you put into it. I know writing can take time and inspiration strikes when it wants to, but I just wanted to see if there might be an ETA for Chapter 18? Or maybe if you had any snippets you’d be willing to share?

No pressure at all, of course! I completely understand that life (and creative flow) doesn’t always run on a schedule. I just can’t wait to see where the story goes next and thought I’d share my excitement. Thank you again for such an amazing story—I’m truly hooked!

Hi anon! apologies for answering this a week later than planned, last week was... rough

thank you so much for taking the time to reach out and tell me how much you love this fic, it really does mean a great deal to me to know that there are people out there that read my little stories and enjoy them and keep thinking about them even after they've closed the ao3 tab. truly words cannot express what it means so thank you so much!

I don't have an ETA on ch 18 right now, I'm working on finishing the last chapter of my time loop fic (literally taking a break to answer this) and once that's done I'm hoping to pivot back to SL but full disclosure I also have a secret santa fic that's only about hmm half done? maybe? so I'll be working on that too (it's just a one shot tho so hopefully it won't take up too much of my time)

anyway, here's the good stuff, a lil snippy from ch 18 under the cut!

the future's past

Her arm bled slowly, a red rivulet trailed toward her wrist. He checked it over and found only shallow scrapes at her elbow, until he rotated her arm and found–

“He bit you?” It was a question only because he didn’t believe his eyes were actually seeing two crescents of teeth marks marring her skin.

I think a lot of what makes fanfiction so magical is writers taking the time to explore tiny elements that were imagined into existence in the source material and then abandoned. It's the deep dive into that t-shirt, the forgotten gift, the nickname, the spare key, the anger they swallowed down, the trauma they supressed, the love they denied, the story that wasn't mainstream enough to make it. It's the little things getting their moment to shine and I fucking love that and I will fight for it always.

Bumble Birthday Fic Recs!!

it is my wonderful friend @bumblepony's birthday today and did you know she has written 89 fics for The Last of Us 😲 here are some of my favorites that you should definitely check out and leave some kudos/comments on:

Ghost Repeater: Joel gets a ham radio while he and Ellie are on the outs. Someone answers his call.

Ellie of Green Gables: Ellie is being fostered by the Miller brothers at their ranch, but she isn't what they were expecting. This is a found family fic based on the worlds of Anne of Green Gables and The Last of Us.

When The Time is Wrong, We Make It Right: Time Travel-Timey Whimey - What would happen if Tess, Joel, Tommy & Maria went back in time to 1992? What would change, and what would stay the same? Mature

A Soul For Sale Or Rent: Ellie is a Ghost, and Joel is the only one who can see her. She needs his help to figure out what happened to her before it's too late.

Baby Girls, Miller: Sarah and Ellie are both Premature babies in the same NICU. Joel and Naomi (His Wife) end up fostering Ellie when she has nowhere to go home. Mature

Ashes denote that Fire was: The Firefighter Joel Miller AU that only a few people asked for and I just had to write it.

Boy I Was Back Then: Tommy and Maria meet for the first time in 1995 when Tommy works as a Ranch Hand on Maria's family ranch for the summer. They meet again 11 years later in 2006, Will their love be strong enough to bring them back together? Mature

Happiest of birthdays to you, my dear @bumblepony 🐝💛
