Topical. And beautiful.
David Fitzgerald, author of “Nailed: Ten Christian Myths That Show Jesus Never Existed at All” destroys a theist’s attempt to claim “Jesus” was an accurate, historical figure.
Caller: “That is so messed up.” Matt Dillahunty: “Yeah, that logic stuff is a real pain in the ass, isn’t it?"
Jealous bears every ounce of blame.
Tracie and Matt discuss “well, I just believe anyway” and Tracie’s journey away from fundamentalist “faith”.
(circa 2012)
Arguments for god are a distraction from believers being unable to substantiate their claims. When these fail, they retreat to “faith,” leaving the skeptic with no reason to change their position.
Hey do you know about The atheist experience on YouTube? I think their conversations are really interesting and from what I've seen all of their argument are build on science. You should take a look if you haven't already
Yes, I’ve watched a number of their videos. The full episodes are over an hour, though, and they have more episodes than The Simpsons, so it’s kind of a big undertaking. The show is allowed to be excerpted and reposted by fans, so sometimes it’s easier to watch a clip of a specific caller or conversation than a full episode:
At least from my experience, most of what I’ve seen hasn’t been science-based, it’s been out-bibling the bible thumpers (Matt and Tracie in particular grew up as fundamentalist Xtians and know the bible way better than any caller), or pointing out the logical flaws in one of the stock apologetics (like how everything needs a cause, and therefore must have been created by a god… who somehow doesn’t need a cause).
I admire their patience and willingness to try and walk the caller through the problems in their logic and thought process… even though it usually doesn’t go anywhere (because the bible says that god says the bible says that god says the bible says…). And even though a caller last week brought them the same thing. Just like the week before. And the week before that.
Probably the biggest thing I’ve gotten from them is that why is often more important than what, embodied in their standard question, “what do you believe and why?” That last part seems to either stump or be completely ignored by theists.
For reference, this is their YouTube channel.
