part of what makes tragedies tragic is the story being preventable from the outside but unpreventable from the inside
If they had done things differently they could have been happy, but to do things differently would require them to be someone else.
#in like#my freshman year english class#we were told to write an alternate ending to romeo and juliet#mine relied on three things:#romeo was just a *little* too early#the friar was a ridiculously chatty fellow#(guy literally has the longest monologue in the entire play)#and anyone can trip over a rock if they're in enough of a hurry#like#all it would take to keep the ending from happening how it did#would be the friar talking romeo's ear off a little longer#and romeo being too impatient to watch his footing#both of which are very in character#and neither of which canonically happened :/#so i mean#with a lot of tragedies this is very true#but sometimes the tragedy lies partially in chance#which in the case of romeo and juliet#is actually very thematic#because even with the characters continuing to act as they would#the outcome (at least in part) depends on fate#tragedy#literary analysis#reblog
